(( this is a LONG OVERDUE thread and I do apologize for the delay Can't Keep))
I love Can't Keep. It seriously is a song that takes you places. The way Ed draws out the chorus..."Can't keeeeeeeep me heeeeeeeere", really fuckin gets to me! Just they way he sings that it's like he's taken us away from where ever it is that we can't be kept. A total out of body journey for sure. The progression of it all is so beautiful. It's very uplifting and inspirational (not to mention highly underrated as well ). There aren't that many words to it, but that doesn't even matter. Like a few other PJ songs, this is a case where less is definitely more. These words are incredible.
"I've lived all this life like an ocean in disguise."
One of the best lines ever!!
Oh and THAT INTRO? Hell yeah! These drum rolls just do it to me. I LOVE IT!
There is much to love about this song and I think it's due time that it got much lovin back.
It makes me groove~~ like I'm riding one giant wave of independence.
*does weird little shuffle dance*
I don't know, it just has such a holy feel to it. Makes me feel strong and very happy.
THANK YOU PEARL JAM
+++CAN'T KEEP+++
I wanna shake. I wanna wind out.
I wanna leave this mind and shout.
I've lived all this life like an ocean in disguise.
I don't live forever. You can't keep me here.
I wanna race with the sundown.
I want a last breath. I don't let out.
Forgive every being.
The bad feelings. It's just me.
I won't wait for answers.
You can't keep me here.
I wanna rise and say goodnight.
I wanna take a look on the other side.
I've lived all those lives.
It's been wonder. Full at night.
I will live for ever.
You can't keep me here.

For me this song is about living, and living each day and moment to its fullest. Its about doing whatever is in your heart to do. Its about not being held down by anything-- by fear, by expectations, by others. I get the feeling Ed wrote this in Hawaii staring out at the ocean and getting that incredible sense of freedom that brings. Maybe that sums it up best. . . its about truly being free.
Just my opinion
Jeff Buckley
I like that idea.
Yes! I really like your take on this too.
I agree with a lot of it. It really has some sorta spiritual feel to it for me, like an out of body experience/high. Which is definitely how Ed feels when he is in the ocean I am sure. Just so free, so independent, so strong....SO ALIVE! Getting a rush that you can do anything. Hell yeah! Just one with the ocean and one with yourself, telling this world "fuck off, you can't keep me here" and going on a little journey of your own where the sky is the not the limit. I really can feel this feeling in the song too. I think that's why it feels so damn good.

I like to think of it as a welcome to death. He enjoys life, but he doesn't want to live forever and he's glad he won't.
Otherwise, it could be a sign that the record contract will soon be finished they won't own his music anymore.
they both could be completly wrong but it's my opinion.
One uninvited chromosome
Riot Act is just awesome!!!!
I think I'll go put this on right now actually. It's a journey I will never tire of.
(and yes, Riot Act is awesome! I must agree )

I've been listening to this one a lot lately. Never will I tire of this feeling. It just lifts me up and sends me off floating. These drums and tripped out guitar effects just put me in a trance!!! Every single thing in this song compliments the other. This twangy music, these fuckin incredible, inspiring lyrics and the way they're sung all dragged out?! Damn, it just seriously makes for one hell of a trip!!! This song definitely takes me away.

It would fit perfectly on No Code, it is by far the best track on Riot Act.

This song just frees my spirit I swear. I love it more every second! Such a refreshing little number...makes me feel like I'm flying. It washes over you, bathes you. It just captures something so holy, magical and pure. The feeling of this song is something all it's own. Damn it feels good!!
Thanks again PJ!

As I was taking a nap, I listened to Riot Act, this song came on, and I listened to the lyrics. This part of the song:
I wanna race with the sundown.
I want a last breath. I don't let out.
Forgive every being.
The bad feelings. It's just me.
I won't wait for answers.
You can't keep me here.
is what I identified the most w/. You really want to know why that person did that to you, but of course, you know you aren't going to get a straight answer out of them. And the line, "you can't keep me here" to me, I see it as, well, I am moving on and I am not going to wait for you, still love you and all, but I am not letting what that person did to me hold me back and be where I want to be.:)
The "forgive every being", which is hard to forgive someone that has done some harm to you, but of course you don't blame everyone else though b/c it is not their fault, but the person who is at fault.
That is the way I see the song now and it has now become one of the closest songs I identify with.:)
Sorry for the ramble. haha

I always thought the song is about Eddie saying he wants to persue other interest other than singing, maybe like his true love surfing. I dunno.
