Yeah, not to make yet another thread in here, but I just couldn't believe one for this gorgeous/perfect/masterpiece of a song didn't already exist so I had to change that. :)

Ok, this song has a very special place in my heart and although it's nearly impossible to choose a fav PJ song I can safely say this one always seems to make it's way to the TOP TOP TOP of everything in my mind. Such an amazing, beautiful, gorgeous song. When I think of the word gorgeous this song is actually one of the first things that comes to mind. Love the studio version, love the remix, love the UNPLUGGED version and all that added emotion, love every single live performace I have ever heard and seriously look forward to the day I get to experience this one live. This song just never does anything wrong in my mind and I more than appreciate it. I thought it was time we all voiced our love for this beauty.

The other night I was at the beach with friends and everytime I'd walk over to the water I couldn't help but sing this song to myself. It just fits. Just as the ocean itself oozes with this calming feeling, like everything is alright in the world...damn so does this song. It's just perfect! Ed and his "oooooooooooo wooooooooo" parts?!? :o I can listen to that man "oo and wooo" forever. WOW! Says so much without really saying anything. This is yet another song where less is more. But that's actually my only semi-complaint about it...I wish it was about 45 minutes longer. LOL!! Simply can't get enough. But hey, that's what the good ol' repeat button is for and I can assure it gets worn the fuck out with this one.

GIVE IT UP FOR THE MIGHTY...

~~~O~C~E~A~N~S~~~~
Hold on to the thread.
The currents will shift glide me towards you.
You know something's left.
And we're all allowed to dream of the next, oh
ohh, of the next time we touch.
Oooh. Ooooh. Ooooooh.
You don't have to stray the oceans away.
Waves roll in my thoughts. Hold tight the ring.
The sea will rise please stand by the shore.
Oh. Oh. Oh I will be, I will be there once more.
Oooh. Oooooh. Ooooh.
=
Uh huh. Oh. Oooooh. Ooooh.
    ((had to bring this in here from a previous post of mine, seemed appropiate) ;)
    Here is my take on it...
    This is definitely a love song. A very powerful, passionate one at that. There is such a binding feeling involved in it. A message that seems to say "I will always be with you". I get such a strong feeling of devotion and commitment.
    Just as the tides are high and low, so are relationships. What it all comes down to here is that no matter what, I will come back to you, I am always with you. Time or distance cannot come between true love. "Hold tight the ring", I definitely see that as a keepsake, a symbol of this bond and dedication to one another. Even though I may not be right by your side, I am always with you, the love is always there...the ring is a reminder of that. Soo beautiful.
    The song, the actual music has it's highs and lows too, which always puts an image of a wave in my mind. It's so smooth, it glides along and just flows so perfectly! Such a pure, magical thing.
    For Eddie I see this as a song about his combined love and passion for the ocean/surfing, as well as that special someone. Again, I think it's simply beautiful. When he hits the "I will be there once moooooooore.
    Oooh Ooooooooooh." it really takes me places. So much emotion!! This is true.
    What a song!!! Whatever it means to you, wherever it takes it, it somewhere so personal, passionate and heartfelt. It's an incredible journey.
    Thanks for this gem Pearl Jam!
    oh girl, seriously, don't make cry w/that in the library. Especially when you say this. It reminds me of what I am in right now as well:
    Such a beautiful post and I was wondering when you were going to get around to posting about Oceans b/c it is YOUR song. ;)
    I totally understand what you mean girl, overlooking the ocean in San Francisco, the last time I was there, my last day in Cali, on that beach, I swear to you, that song came into my head. Hearing the waves crash and seeing it as well, you just can't help but think of this beautiful song.
    Now I have to watch the video as well. :)
    Aww Nadi, I wasn't trying to make ya cry.
    *hugs*
    This song is just so moving like that though. I often get teary-eyed when listening to it as well but in such a good way. How about in the Unplugged version when he sings "ooooh Beth" at the end!? Good lord! There is just so much passion in this song. It's simply heaven-sent.
    Ooooo and THE VIDEO?!!? :eek:
    as Kaddi would say...
    <insert perverted rant here>
    haha.
    Really though, LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! It does an amazing job of capturing the entire feeling of this song. And I know PJ has issues with videos and fears like this...but they got this one down.
    best song on ten... the production of Oceans is awesome... eddie's voice is amazing on the album...
    Oceans worth ten
    So that is how I learned the lesson that everyone is alone. And your eyes must do some raining if you are ever going to grow. But when crying don't help and you can't compose yourself. It is best to compose a poem, an honest longing or simple song of hope.
    That is why I'm singing
    Aww I know that Lydi sweetie, but you do say things that is so moving and true and that is what is so rad about you sis.;)
    *hugs back*
    oh I agree again w/you girl. Damn that Oceans Unplugged, talked about emotions man, times like that I wanted to cry when I saw that, calling for Beth, damn, tugs at the heart my friend.
    Saw the video last night again, talk about "WHOA!" and I must say I love the way that video was done as well, w/black and white film, totally captures the emotion of that song.
    The way Eddie sings, WOW, that is why that man is one of the BEST vocalists out there, his range, especially on that song, is totally amazing!
    I heard this song on the radio, on my friend's show, you just can't help but picture yourself overlooking the ocean. Damn, it makes me wish I lived close by right now. Boy, do I miss California. :(
  • This song is so spiritual, i love the unplugged version too. Has anyone noticed the little smile eddie gives to himself on unplugged cos he hits the note perfectly.
  • I never actually paid attention to the lyrics. I just love the sound of it.
    beautiful song. great opener to a set. Creates a wonderful feeling that the night is gonna be special. I have to say in WPB '00 I was completely caught off guard when they began the show w/ it. So beautiful and gorgeous. The ebb and flow of the song was incredible.
  • I find myself craving this song at times....needing to hear it. There aren't many songs that you just get that instant craving for, at least for me, but this is one of them. It's so soothing...the bass just makes my body want to rock slowly, like a piece of moss in the ocean.
Isn't it so perfectly fitting how this song washes over you?? :o Also, I totally know what you mean about that craving .....it totally reminds me of how I crave the ocean too, needing to be by the waves, feel that mist, hear that sound.....I crave that so much and go to the beach every chance I get. It is the ultimate in relaxation and comfort...as is this gorgeous ass masterpiece of a song. :):o
  • when this song was played and I have to say ti was truly an amazing highlight of the show... from the opening notes I went freakin nuts-carzy-excited because I had hoped beyond hope that they would play this song in one of my two concert visits...
    This song has a very special place for myself and my wife (girlfriend at the time it first was released) it was just bad luck that my wife came to the Edmonton concert and not the Calgary one... mind you if they had we probably would have made out right there in the aisle... LOL...
    maybe it's all for the best. :)
    Incidentally I love the fact that you can take the double meaning out of this... that something so beautiful and touching emotionally could also be interpreted as something completly different.
    That's the beauty of Ed and PJ as a whole , as song writers... it what makes them the best damn rock band on the planet... EVER!
