Tornado just touched down in my old neighborhood in Ormond Beach. Friends and former colleagues are still there. One of their boats sank. Another had a tree fall on their house. That's just from the outer bands. Other areas look like they're getting it a lot worse.

Best of luck and best wishes to all those effected by this.

I have to say thank you to still being here. I finally lost power sometime after 9pm last night. It was kind of Kool  to have so freaking quiet, no music, no tv, no computers nothing. One of the best nights sleep ive had in years.

Now my neighborhood comes by to take pictures or my majestic avatar tree that has fallen. I've got get somebody to take a picture of me standing on the trunk, if I can climb up there. Very calm now, cool with the sun rising in the East. Going to get a little breakfast, get my bicycle gear and your the neighborhood. Open up the shutters first though can't stand it being so dark in side. That's all for now later.

Be careful as you venture out, g. There are bound to be some precarious situations out there. Good luck.

Agreed.  And great attitude as you've been going through this; I'm not sure I'd be as calm (or come off as such ;) ).

Florida police have warned people not to fire their weapons at Hurricane Irma after thousands responded to a Facebook event.

"To clarify, DO NOT shoot weapons @ #Irma. You won’t make it turn around & it will have very dangerous side effects," the Pasco Sheriff's office tweeted late Saturday.

The Facebook event is titled "Shoot at Hurricane Irma" and over 50,000 people have expressed interest in taking part.

Lol. The group started this as a complete joke ... Apparently some of the more stupid idiots in the area may have taken it seriously.

which area was it? maybe we can use deductive reasoning and come up with who they likely voted for

that's funny, I remember back in 2004, when Nader was trying to get on the ballot by petitioning a certain number of signatures, in PA it was like 22,000 or so, the DNC and McAuliffe would hire the homeless ($1 per signature) to fill in the petition sheets with Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Clark Kent, so they could then turn around and challenge the signatures in court in order to remove Nader from the ballot. classic DNC.

Charleston, SC seems to have been smacked harder than expected.

Here in Columbia there are just the occasional wind gusts and rain. Haven't experienced serious issues or had anyone talking about much damage or anything around here. Occasional tree branch and some places without power.

@tweedyfanjen all well for you here in cola still?

We got expected storm surge here. Almost 10ft for 6 hours or so. A LOT of wind and rain. Several tornado warnings.

A boat that hurricane Hugo deposited on the side of the road leading into folly beach, that has become somewhat of a landmark, was moved to some guys backyard.

I hope you and yours are okay, Scott, with all of that.

Weird bit about the boat. I imagine a lot of things are where they aren't supposed to be, and that it will be a major mess, sorting out and salvaging property.

    maybe this needs to change

In Florida, a right-to-work state with a long history of evacuations from hurricanes and other natural disasters, there is no blanket law protecting fleeing employees from dismissal for job abandonment, said Ben Yormak, a Bonita Springs employment lawyer.

“Florida just doesn’t have a specific law that says if there’s a hurricane, you’ve got to let people go,” Yormak said.

What a stupid argument from a lawyer.  The people he is referring to are in the field of first responders, community servicers, etc. It's clear that they were informed of these responsibilities when they took the job.  By contrast, my people in Naples were not told they had to work in emergencies (no mention in the employment agreement), and we closed our building at 230 yesterday.  Further, we share the building with Hertz corporate and the building manager closed the building today.  That's what is happening all over south Florida. People couldn't go to work if they wanted to do so.
