With the 200th anniversary of
Karl Marx’s birth, socialism is making a
comeback in America. Democrats used to accuse Republicans of fear-mongering
when they called out certain far-left policy ideas as “socialist.” Now, a
growing number of Democrats are wearing the label as a badge of honor.
American socialists may imagine their proposals mirror those in Northern European
countries such as Sweden and Norway. In reality, ideas along the lines of
“Medicare for All” have more in common with economists’ traditional definition
of socialism. The record of countries who have experimented with those types of
command-and-control systems is devastating: Maoist China, the Soviet Union, and
Venezuela among them.
Yes, Trump is a complete jackass and bully, but things like this are not helpful.
I disagree. There are many parallels between Trump and Hitler, and the GOP and the Nazis, as well as between Germans in the 30s and Trump supporters now, and of course this is just a visual symbol of the real parallels. This is observably true. The only reason anyone denies it is because they find the comparison uncomfortable or insulting or scary. But that doesn't make it any less valid. Of course such comparisons do NOT mean people are saying the GOP and the Nazis are exactly the same, but many can't seem to distinguish between "parallels" and "identical" while they offended by the idea.
Since these parallels are objectively accurate, they serve as a dire warning. The only problem is that those who just want to wear blinders refuse to acknowledge it. They say "this is not helpful" simply because they think people being mad about the comparison, however apt it is, is enough reason to avoid reality.

Yes, I understand that and agree with your point, but a stupid photo of them in similar poses is not how you make that argument or comparison. I guess I just expect more. We have all seen how photos can be made to look around here or presented completely out of context. In the information age, we just want to take the shortcut and post a photo, meme or gif though. Idiocracy.

I see nothing wrong with visual symbolism. I think it's a legit form of communication. I don't think it's the messenger's job to ensure that the receiver is smart enough to interpret it rationally.

If we were talking about art, sure, not images pertaining to historical context that are depicting a specific moment in time in comparison to another moment, unless it is specific hand signals or motions that aren't a part of a behavioral tic when speaking.

But it's a valid comparison too. Behaviour and body language does indeed have meaning and patterns. But look, I understand what you're saying, but such an image is simply meant to convey a larger message. If it makes you more comfortable, it could very easily be labelled as art, because of course art can and does very much reflect history, politics, social commentary, etc.

Yes, body language and behavior are valid comparisons when using them to further the case for similarity that already exists in tone and rhetoric. My main concern is that this type of general comparison with a photo gets blown off a lot more easily than a companion commentary, but then again, it probably doesn't make much difference to those who don't agree with it anyway and is better served as an image for those already on the same page. Anyone wanting to know more or understand it could just as easily research what the similarities are.

I agree that it will get blown off and doesn't make much difference to those who have already decided that they will reject parallels made between Trump and Hitler until maybe they see the news about piles of dead bodies in concentration camps, lol. A lot of people have thrown up a solid brick wall against these kinds of comparisons/parallels ... to the country's detriment, IMO.

I'm not on twitter. Those pictures are from instagram. Concise posts that move the conversation along are bad now? There's MAD BLAH BLAH BLAH everywhere you turn. I'm trying to help you as quickly as possible.
The confederate flag is as overtly RACIST as you get even before this shitstorm. Any one who tells you different, or is flying one proudly outside their house or off the back of their pickup, is a fucking racist.
I have a nephew who grew up in VA, just went off to college this fall. He tried to float that Heritage not Hate nonsense at me one day, and I told him he was LIED to. The thing about the US version of institutional systemic racism is it doesn't take days off. It's always there.
Now it's fucking overt and normalized with Trump-ler "in charge".
I go back and forth on this issue. For me, the flag is an obvious sign of racism and oppression, but I'm not from the south and I have read the history on it's origins so it's a no brainer, but I wonder how many ignorant people who were told by their parents or some other source that they shouldn't be ashamed by their pride in that flag there are. I guess if you don't care to learn the history or consider other perceptions, then maybe you are a racist, just not an obviously overt one.
No one is born a racist. So there’s that.
Racism along with xenophobia, homophobia, Islamophobia, and anti-Semitism are all learned at home. Usually from a rhetoric based on fear, hate, ignorance, jealousy, and lies

I know that is true, but of course not always, just because there are plenty of people with terribly racist etc etc parents who ended up rejecting all such things, and vice versa. There are plenty of sources where people learn all that shit (Trump and the current GOP being one of many).

Something to share: Socialism has a long legacy of failure across the world.
