You had it correct the first time. My opinion hasn’t changed. Of the two terrible candidates he was the one with more potential upside. He still is what he is...I never believed that he would turn in to somebody that is “Presidential” but warts and all I still recognize why he is necessary. His ugliness shatters illusions. His classless rants forces people to confront truths that they do not wish to see. The most important truth is that the global governing class has failed us all. He will not be the solution to that failure. He however will awaken us to that failure which could potentially allow us to discover solutions. The scab must be picked off before we can heal.

This its an interesting post from you, someone who has historically defended our position as leader in the world.  But let me challenge one part specifically... How has global leadership failed us precisely? Has there ever been a higher standard of living in this country? What about the world in general? What about global conflict?  Are we not safer today than 50 years ago? How about 100 years... what about 150 years when war ravaged Europe every ten years?  

This whole mindset is appealing to aging whites in this country who have seen their influence wane while the technology revolution leaves them behind.  I'm sympathetic but the whole has been lifted while the fewer are not.  

And none of Trumps policies are going to lift these 50+ year olds whites in rural Alabama from their current station.

Was and is. As I have stated time and again...Trump is a hail mary pass. I am satisfied with his decisions to date in the face of this disaster but I think the chance of his success is low. The west’s will to succeed seems to be too far gone.

On a macro level you are absolutely right mRussel. Where we differ I believe is looking at long term trends and seeing that this is not sustainable. Now certainly there is a subsection of aging whites who only look at this on a personal/local level (you might think they are selfish for having their concerns but I don’t fault someone for being concerned with his/her own lot...it doesn’t always come from a negative place) but I am looking at this on from a more global perspective. Be it a nuclear North Korea, a collapsing Europe, a militarizing China, a collapsing Venezuela, a contangion of debt spread throughout the economic system, demographic trends that only point to an aging western population that will not be able to sustain itself...these are all things whether we like it or not are on the horizon. Now I don’t for one second believe Trump is the solution to these problems but I do believe he could be the person that removes our blinders to these problems. Only after honestly opening up to the problems in front of us can we begin to look for solutions.

He actually might have had more 'upside' than Clinton (for some people), but that ceiling was never very high and the floor was extremely low (as we are witnessing). Much lower than Clinton.

Was and is. As I have stated time and again...Trump is a hail mary pass. I am satisfied with his decisions to date in the face of this disaster but I think the chance of his success is low. The west’s will to succeed seems to be too far gone.

Choosing between a predator and a victim-shaming enabler of predators is no choice at all. It unfortunately took the whole issue off the table. The outcome however exposed far more predators so in the long run if this is your issue then you should be satisfied where things are going.
