WASHINGTON — When former President Donald Trump returned briefly last week to his office at Trump Tower in New York, he was joined by his son Eric Trump and the top executive of a Saudi Arabian real estate company to sign a deal that creates new conflict-of-interest questions for his just-launched presidential campaign.

The deal is with a Saudi real estate company that intends to build a Trump-branded hotel, villas and a golf course as part of a $4 billion real estate project in Oman. The agreement continues a practice that had been popular for the Trump family business until Trump was elected president — selling branding rights to an overseas project in exchange for a generous licensing fee.

But what makes this project unusual — and is sure to intensify the questions over this newest transaction — is that by teaming up with the Saudi company, Trump is also becoming part of a project backed by the government of Oman itself.

The deal leaves Trump, as a former president hoping to win the White House again, effectively with a foreign government partner that has complex relations with the United States, including its role in trying to end the war in Yemen and other important foreign policy agenda items for Washington.

The deal Trump signed was with Dar Al Arkan, the Saudi-based real estate company that is leading the project in collaboration with the government of Oman, which owns the land. It is the second deal signed recently between Trump and his family that has direct financial ties to a Middle East government.

The Trump Organization also hosted the Saudi-government-backed LIV Golf tournaments at family-owned golf clubs in New Jersey and Florida. The Saudi government’s $620 billion Public Investment Fund has financed the LIV Golf effort, which then paid venues like Trump National Doral in Miami and Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey to host two of its tournaments this year.

Donald Trump reported nearly $1 billion in operating losses over a two-year period about a decade ago, an accountant testified at the criminal trial of the Trump Organization, spilling into public tax information that the former president has tried repeatedly to keep private.

The accountant, Donald Bender, a partner at Mazars USA, the firm that prepared tax returns for Trump and his company, testified Tuesday that Trump reported losses each year for 10 years from 2009 to 2018.

"There are losses for all these years," Bender said.

The disclosure at the Manhattan trial of Trump's family business came the same day the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the IRS is required to turn over six years' worth of Trump's tax information to the House Ways and Means Committee.

Prosecutor Susan Hoffinger questioned Bender about Trump's taxes during cross-examination as the trial nears an end. The Manhattan district attorney fought for nearly three years to obtain the records, including two appearances before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Hoffinger asked Bender about Trump's losses in 2009 and 2010, when the company lost nearly $1 billion.

"Do you recall in 2010 Donald Trump had losses of almost $200 million on his personal tax returns?" Hoffinger asked.

"I believe so," Bender said after examining the records.

"Do you recall in 2009, Donald Trump had, his personal tax returns had losses around $700 million?" Hoffinger followed.

"Sounds about right," Bender replied.

The staggering losses belie the reputation Trump has carefully tried to cultivate as a shrewd and successful businessman. That image helped carry him to the White House once, with Trump hoping it will again as he now embarks on a new run for president.

The numbers largely mirrored a report in The New York Times in September 2020 when they acquired select portions of Trump's tax returns.

Trump is not a defendant in the case and the line of questioning had no obvious connection to the tax scheme the Trump Organization is charged with carrying out over a 12-year period when former chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg and other executives were allegedly paid off the books with perks like rent, car leases and private school tuition.

Weisselberg, who has pleaded guilty and testified pursuant to a plea agreement with prosecutors, has aided the defense by saying he hatched the scheme out of his own greed and Trump was unaware. He also testified that the scheme helped the Trump Organization reduce its payroll taxes, assisting the Manhattan District Attorney's Office prove there was a benefit to the company.

On Saturday night, a gunman opened fire inside the LGBTQ+ nightclub Club Q. The shooter was disarmed and taken down by heroicpatrons, including an army veteran who went into “combat mode” and helped saved “dozens and dozens of lives.” Tragically, the attack killed at least five people and injured 25 more and was described by Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers as having “all the trappings of a hate crime,” though he added that an official motive is “still under investigation.”

In the aftermath of the shooting, conservatives have doubled down on their anti-LGBTQ rhetoric, including former legal adviser to Donald Trump, Jenna Ellis. In a description for her Tuesday episode of The Jenna Ellis Show, Ellis attempts to addresses what she calls “the left’s narrative” that focuses on “Christians hate homosexual and transgender individuals and somehow that ‘hate’ led to the shooting.” The description then goes on to make an irrational parallel between abortion and the Colorado shooting, asking: “Why aren’t leftists as angry at the murder of unborn children as they are the murder of LGBTQ people?”

Yet in the episode she directly points out that the five people killed that night had “no evidence at all that they were Christians” and that “they are now reaping the consequences of having eternal damnation… We should be having that conversation.” Ellis continues, “Instead of the just tragedy of what happened to the body, we need be talking about what happened to the soul and the fact that they are now in eternal separation from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.” 

Earlier this year, Ellis was ordered to appear before a grand jury investigating whether Trump and others illegally tried to influence the outcome of the 2020 election. However, much of her time since then has been dedicated to attacking the LGBTQ+ community on social media including a social post where she appeared to equate gay men to monkeypox.

Trump’s ex-lawyer echoes the use of inflammatory rhetoric against the LGBTQ community both before and following the killings in Colorado Springs. On Monday, Fox News host Tucker Carlson condemned the shooting, yet four minutes into his 14-minute monologue, a graphic reading “Stop Sexualizing Kids” displayed across the screen as he blamed the left for “mutilating” and “sexualizing” kids.

Tim Pool, a conservative YouTuber and podcast host with 1.4 million followers on Twitter, seemed to blame the venue where the shooting occurred. “We shouldn’t tolerate pedophiles grooming kids,” Pool tweeted. “Club Q had a grooming event. How do prevent the violence and stop the grooming?” He appeared to reference the all-ages drag Sunday brunches hosted at Club Q.

Matt Walsh, a prominent conservative YouTuber with 1.9 million subscribers, posted a video on Tuesday titled, “Why The Left Is So Desperate To Expose Children To Drag Queens.” “Is it that hard to not crossdress in front of kids? Is the compulsion that overwhelming?” he said in the video. “If it’s causing this much chaos and violence, why do you insist on continuing to do it?” 

While far-right conservatives continue to villify and blame the LGBTQ+ community for the horror that took place in Colorado Springs, the city itself is focused on supporting the victims and their families. During a press conference, the Mayor Suthers added that while Colorado Springs is a “community in mourning,” the city is “determined to make sure that the actions of a lone gunman don’t define our community.”

Former president Donald Trump launched a Thanksgiving rant on social media and lashed out at one of the prosecutors investigating allegations of misconduct, including tax fraud.

“The Manhattan DA Case should never have been brought,” the 45th president posted on Truth Social on Thursday, adding that it was a “total witch hunt”.

Mr Trump rued: “The DA’s 'Star' witness, who has been harassed and brutalised, and is scared beyond belief, has nevertheless totally confirmed our story and defence.”

“This case should be dismissed immediately, and the large, highly paid and ‘prestigious’ accounting firm that we relied on to do their job, but didn’t, should pay us a fortune in damages,” Mr Trump added, attacking the Mazars Group, which used to handle the accounting for his organisation.

In another post, Mr Trump said: “Give me freedom or give me death.”

The one-time president’s real estate company began mounting a defence earlier this week in its criminal trial on charges including tax fraud after the prosecution rested its case.

The Trump Organization – which operates real estate, hotels and golf courses – is facing accusations of hiding executive perks from tax authorities for more than 15 years and falsely reporting bonuses as non-employee compensation.

Earlier, prosecutors with the Manhattan district attorney’s office called five witnesses over three weeks including their “star witness” Allen Weisselberg – the company’s former chief financial officer – who pleaded guilty to charges. including grand larceny and fraud in August.

The company, if convicted, could face up to $1.6m in fines for three counts of tax fraud and six other counts it faces.

Minutes later, Mr Trump returned to Truth Social to complain about the judges and justices saying it was “almost impossible to get a fair decision on a case if you are a Republican”.

“Sorry, but that's just the way it is!” he said.

The former president claimed he “did nothing wrong on Jan 6th”, calling the attack on the Capitol peaceful and patriotic.

He lamented that the investigation into his actions was a “rigged scam”. “The ‘Justice’ Department and FBI are CORRUPT...,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Trump is facing a second lawsuit from author E Jean Carroll, who accuses him of raping her in a New York department store in the 1990s.
