I personally think all statues should remain..for better or worse it's American history..I can't comprehend people that want to impose their own beliefs to attempt to erase the past...or the need for violence on either side..
The statue was put put up to impose racist beliefs on others. So factor that in. I said earlier to move it to the American museum of Genocide.
I've walked past that statue..didn't get the urge to hate minorities.

Which is good. I was referring to the historical significance and what it means to some currently. To me it's a nod to slavery, segregation and racism in a public park.
Maybe an OJ football statue in Brentwood is the equivalent. A black man who killed some white people. Surely no white people would protest to that. I mean, he certainly was a great football player. I can't help if you're only focusing in on the murders and then robbery conviction.

If I were African-American, I may view it differently..but I guess what I am trying to say is everybody has to put up with crap you don't agree with..it's life.
The PJ facebook page had a brief and fiery exchange this a.m. with trump voters fully defending him. You can summarize what they say this way: say the Klan is the same as blm, refer to Obama and Clinton, Talk about Hillary and racist Senator Byrd, deny trump's racist and when someone cites references, quickly deny the refernces as fake liberal news. And don't forget that the Democrats are the historical party or racism and slavery!
I think the thread is still up if anyone's interested.

It has nothing to do with erasing the past. Put them in museums. Read about them in history books. Watch movies about the Civil War. But erecting statues or monuments to honor the losing side in a treasonous war makes no sense to me. Flying the confederate flag is no different than flying the Nazi flag. Both were defeated, and neither flag needs to be flown. The statues and the flag are symbols of racism and oppression as far as I can tell. Is that a heritage you are proud of? What would make a town want that sort of monument as a centerpiece of their city? "This general fought the good fight for bigotry and lost. We're still proud of him!" Again, not having been exposed to any southern US influences (other than chicken and waffles), I just can't wrap my head around this mindset. It seems completely ass backwards.

Maybe a statue of Yassir Arafat in Jerusalem, you know, Sadam Hussein large, over by the wailing wall and dome of the rock? Hell, every settlement should have one in its center. Throw in a Hitler or two to remind them of their history.
I actually think that there will be a gold statue of President Trump on the whitehouse lawn left as his legacy. Behind the fence and untouchable by deplorables.

Seriously, why can't black people just learn to deal with the structural, symbolic, and historical racism in the USA? It's life....

I m not sure where you have visited but have you seen any German statues in France? arvn statues in Vietnam? moorish statues in Spain? german statues in Russia?
This could be the only time in history where the losing side can erect statues and fly their battle flag in the same country they lost. I am quite the historian, no one is saying to erase history but rather put each statue in a museum where they belong, not a public place for all to see.

Not only that, but they were traitors that people think should be admired.

Said the white guy.
The white guy that has seen his share of things I don't agree with.I feel very lucky to have been born a WMA...that's as far as my "privilege" goes.I'm not losing sleep over slabs of concrete and bronze. Far more to worry about.

Yeah..and we all know there aren't any racist black people..just old whiteys.
Is this the turning point for republicans or do we really have to wait for the inevitably bad Mueller findings next year? They have to know they cannot get anything accomplished with the current person occupying the white house. It's only going to continue to get worse.
That's literally the same angle the President is taking. The "yeah...but the other side" angle. These aren't slabs of concrete to some people. I'm not offended by them, I'm embarrassed by them. But I certainly understand why someone would be offended. It's not up to you or me to say what's appropriate to be hurt over. The difference is that I understand that and you think they're being hypersensitive. You don't get to make that call as someone not hurt and offended over it.
Brilliant brilliance further brilliantly on display again today. What was that about Trump garnering support and picking up seats in congress, garnering a filibuster proof majority on his way to re-election in 2020? Brilliant, brilliance brilliantly leading the nation and world. I must be blinded by the brilliance?

It's disclosure. Could you imagine if the press found that tidbit out beforehand? They would have a field day.
