OK, it's official - I'm coming to the UK to play 4 shows with the great Duke Garwood @dukegarwood and it's going to be a very special kind of show. We're going to play as a duo to honor the beautiful songs that Duke has written himself and with Mark Lanegan, and I threw in some Screaming Trees and a Mad Season song for extra spice. And then after that set, I am going to show you some of the short films I have been making about music around the world for my Singing Earth series, so you can expect some good storytelling as well. So come and spend a beautiful evening of music, storytelling, and film with Uncle Bear and Uncle Duke, we promise a very special evening. Thank you! Barrett Martin

I also started making my first solo albums in 2004, the same year I did that big ethnomusicology project in the Peruvian Amazon, so I think the Barrett Martin Group is just a natural extension of all the music I have played in my life. We’re not even just a jazz band anymore, because I have people like Alain Johannes and Matt Cameron playing on my new album, and we just jam and experiment with all kinds of musical ideas. Somehow, it all comes through in the songs, and the Barrett Martin Group evolves and changes with each album we make. :open_mouth:

For those who are coming to my shows with Duke Garwood @dukegarwood in the UK and Iceland this May (and for those thinking about it) this little video gives you a glimpse of what I'll be doing. We filmed this during my US tour last November and @bradleyrocks made it into this cool little vid, which is my show of stories, short films, and live music. For this upcoming tour in England and Iceland you'll get the additional beauty of Duke Garwood's voice and his amazing songs as we play a bunch of music as a duo. Shows and ticket links are in the bio! Thank you! Barrett

Today, Friday the 17th, the first episode of my music series, "Singing Earth" will debut on the VEVO music network. I'm the host and music producer, and my creative partner, Tad Fettig, is the director and editor. Our first episode is a surprise of special guests, which we'll announce tomorrow. In the meantime, here are some more photos from our film shoots around the world.
    1. The original pirate gang from the first shoot in Brazil: Tad Fettig, Peter Buck, Dr. Lisette Garcia, Barrett Martin
    2. Tad films delta blues legend, Cedell Davis, Seattle.
    3. Annie Jantzer prepares to sing a vocal with Cedell Davis, Seattle.
    4. Screaming Trees bassist, Van Conner, lays down a bass line for Cedell Davis, Seattle.
    5. Ayron Jones and Zakk Binns lay down guitar solos for Cedell Davis, Seattle.
    6. A short-haired Barrett Martin confers with Cedell Davis before a take, Seattle.
    7. Former Nirvana and Soundgarden member, Jason Everman, records a guitar track for the Shipibo Shamans of the Peruvian Amazon (Jack Endino oversees).
    8. Tad films a landscape in the high Atacama desert, Chile.

Coming out worldwide on Friday, March 14th: Grammy-winning producer and percussionist, Barrett Martin, presents his 11th studio album, “Atmospheric Tremblings." Here the group enters new territory with an album of 15 ambient compositions inspired by Barrett’s work on the Condor Deep Space Telescope in southern New Mexico. After assisting in the assembly and alignment of the telescope, Barrett noticed that some of the distant star formations captured in the telescope’s photos, looked more like musical notations. Drawing from John Cage’s theory that music often appears in natural landscapes, Barrett took blank music staff paper and laid it over the star photos. He then sketched out these "star melodies," which became the foundational ideas for the album. Referencing the earliest Arabic names for the stars, these compositions feature Barrett playing a variety of instruments including: piano, upright bass, kalimbas, gamelans, and an unusual, bowed vibraphone technique. Assisting him in the studio are percussionist Lisette Garcia, trumpeter Dave Carter, saxophonist Skerik, and Arabic oud performances from Iraqi legend, Rahim Alhaj, and Chilean-American virtuoso, Alain Johannes. “Atmospheric Tremblings represents a more mystical, experimental side to my compositional style, in this case, working directly with astrophysicists and astronomers to create music based on star formations and extragalactic structures in deep space. It feels like the most adventurous and beautiful solo album I have ever made.” -Barrett Martin

Barrett produces an album for the first generation blues singer, Cedell Davis. During the studio sessions, legendary rockers stop by and up and coming musicians collaborate with Cedell. Guest musicians include Duff McKagan, Eva Walker, Peter Buck, Ayron Jones, Zakk Binns, Scott McCaughey, Annie Jantzer, Mike McCready, and Van Conner.

The history of American music is Black music, specially music of the Mississippi Delta. It emerged in the late 1800s and every form of popular American music can trace its roots back to there: Blues, Jazz, Rock & Roll, Country, Blue Grass, Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Hip Hop, and every other sub genre you can imagine. What’s remarkable about this unique history is that this music was made by African American men and women, many of whom were the children of slaves. They developed their musical art under the weight of extreme racial prejudice and political and economic oppression, yet they produced the foundation for American music as we know it today. This 3rd episode of my Singing Earth music series was directed by Tad Fettig, and it is the story of one of those original blues singers named Cedell Davis. He was born in 1926, and I had the great honor of recording 3 albums with him between 2001 and 2015. This episode contains archival footage from our recording sessions in 2015, when I brought Cedell to Seattle to record with my best musical friends: Duff McKagan, Eva Walker, Peter Buck, Ayron Jones, Mike McCready, Greg & Zakk Binns, Annie Jantzer, Jack Endino, Scott McCaughey, Skerik, Dave Carter, and Evan Flory-Barnes. It was also the last recording session I ever did with my Screaming Trees bandmate, Van Conner.

All of us musicians have a career because of the Bluesmen and Blueswomen of the American South. This is real history and real soul, and I promise, this episode will crack your heart wide open.

    Love to all, Barrett Martin
