On the other hand they probably need to keep earning a living. They don't do big tours, so they tour a little every year. I'm guessing 10 shows plus a few big festivals.
I have a feeling their living is set. They could tour for free and they will still be okay. These guys are involved in all sorts of stuff outside of the band.
yes the band members are rich but they also have a lot of long time employees that need to be paid. even though ed's guitar tech isn't working he is still paid staff. =my guess. we will get some shows this year. how many, who knows.
agree. they are a business with an office, employees and a budget. there needs to be some revenue and the easiest way to generate large revenues are by playing even a few shows. i'd be very surprised if there were none.
If that is the business model, then all bands would be touring every year.
The thing is most bands that don't tour every year--when they DO tour they play real tours in more than 10 cities. That keeps it going for the off years. PJ tours are short and have been for at least a decade now.

I agree. There was a very noticible change in how Pearl Jam toured. They used to do it the more conventional way. They'd do bigger tours when the dropped an album. 3 leg tour in 98, 3 leg tour in '00, 3 leg tour in '03 etc.. They played a bunch of shows, and they lay low for a few years (maybe play a show here or there, or a small string like the vfc tour, but they were pretty inactive between tours). The thing was they played nearly 70 shows in years they toured. Even the album tours are much lighter in dates now. They really spread it out. Rather than do a full tour every few years, they do a handful every year. I imagine is because they all have families and it keeps them from being away from home a large chunk of time in one year. I'd hate being away from home for 3 or 4 months in a single year.. lol.
