What has happened to PJ?

I know this topic will anger some if not most. But I have to say this... What the hell has happened to PJ? I feel like this band doesn't really give a shit anymore.
Where is the music? They aren't releasing anything anymore. Not even shitty singles like Ole'. Has the well run dry?

Grown up. They have families. They aren't pissed off as much because they are happy.

I'm blessed that they do a tour every year. Not many bands can play live as much as they do, with as much energy as they do, as long as they do.

I'm sure all the guys are still super rad :)

They just got off a remarkable tour. Its not like they were just sitting around all year. New music will come whenever they want. And if they feel pressured to make something new I think the results could be terrible. So we should let them take their time and tour when they feel. Tons of bootlegs in the shop to fill your time in the meanwhile.

They're 50 something year old multi-millionaires who are parents. They're still a full time business and touring band. Writing and releasing has probably taken a backseat tho. I wish we had a new album every year but like Eddie said, its hard to go into mad scientist mode when you have kids. We all knew the records would slow down at some point. They'll probably continue with 2 or 3 (max) albums a decade.

You don't write music and put out records on a schedule. It's art, when the time is right, the music will come. You can't force it!

  • I'd argue that this band is better than ever right now. They're churning out 3+ hour shows on a nightly basis with significant variety in the set lists. They're like a fine wine - only getting better with age.
  • You are not in the fifties are you?
And you don't have kids aren't you?
  • Doesn't make me angry but I do think you are likely not considering the things that cp3iverson shared.
We all would love more music but just need to be happy loving what we have & get moving forward.

I'm in my 30s and I don't feel like doing most of the things I enjoyed doing in my 20s... Pretty impressive that Pearl Jam continually tours and keeps on giving to their fans and to causes and groups that really matter. We're all very fortunate that our boys have stayed together for so long!

At least were not die hard fans of Tool... lol.

I've been a fan of rock music for a long time, so it's no surprise that most bands slow down their output when they get older. It's unfortunate but it happens. Other life stuff gets in the way and/or it becomes harder to come up with good new material. I never assumed PJ was immune to what happens to pretty much every other band out there. I am happy that they've made 10 studio albums, a double b-sides album, even more b-sides and a metric fuck tonne of live material. That's more than most. Gives them plenty to play at their live shows. I've been watching some classic Canadian bands tour lately (I Mother Earth and the upcoming Tea Party tour) and they're touring on the premises of playing a classic 90s album front to back. It's cool when PJ has done that randomly, but I'm pretty happy their output has been good enough they don't have to do that :) Having a band that can come out, play for 3 hours, and have enough quality material that the setlist is different every night. That's really rare.

Tool....... exactly, they've released 2 albums in the last 20 years, and their live shows aren't what they used to be (at least where Maynard's vocals are concerned - their visual show has never been better)

Of the 4 PJ shows I saw this year, PJ really has never sounded better. 25 years in and they are still on top of their game.

At the risk of repeating myself, try to enjoy it.

50 years old, tours that are 3+ hours, averaging an album every 3 years, all of this while having kids and other things in their lives like side projects, solo shows, and benefits...i think they are doing just fine

and if i remember correctly they just toured and did 4 stadium shows
  • JojoRiceJojoRice Posts: 4,225
At the end of every tour they always leave me wanting more! I think they are doing fine. TOTD will keep them busy for the next month or so. Who knows what could happen after that.

PJ is doing fine. It's been a great 25 years and I'm looking forward to the next 25!

I understand the band being older, happy, having families. That makes total sense and I respect that, especially since they have been fairly consistent touring, even if it's not in my home state very often.

It just seems there are so many things PJ/10c could release to satisfy demand. PJ20 anything, Wrigley 2013, the Fenway video shown at the HOB, Blurays of shows, more B-sides/Lost Dogs2, more vault archives (not necessarily on vinyl but remastered digital or CD versions of old shows pre 2000 bootleg sets). I know those all require work so maybe they don't have the staffing to do that, or have the band's clearance. Even then, we are lucky to have so much offered to us and still able to enjoy seeing this band live in 2016.
