This thread inspired me to see what Rolling Stone had to say about it, and now I'm listening to every single album on their top 100 80s albums (or at least as much of each one that I can stand, lol - sometimes that's half of the first song, haha, but not usually!). This could take awhile, but I figure I'll make some good song discoveries along the way! http://www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/100-best-albums-of-the-eighties-20110418/was-not-was-what-up-dog-20110330

awesome article! I've never listened to one chord of a talking heads song...should I give it a try since they have the #4 album of the 80's?

A whole lot of awful too, lol.

I thought about putting down Joy Division but it wouldn't crossover well now, great band but can sound a little dated.

Any others people were on the fence about?

i was never starved for new music in the 1980's
one of my fave bands EVER...men without hats. all of their 1980's albums are TOP SHELF and they had 4 killer albums from that decade!!

    Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
    Metallica - Ride The Lightning
    Transvision Vamp - Pop Art

I'm not a huge 80's fan, but there were some epic albums in that decade. The three I've chosen are what connected with me at the time and the first 2 are still in regular rotation. Transvision Vamp were my fav band as a young teen, due mostly to the crush I had on Wendy James.

Hard to leave out G'n'R - Appetite, Michael Jackson - Thriller/Bad, George Michael - Faith, Eurythmics - Revenge, Midnight Oil, Deisel and Dust.
As I got older, I discovered lots of other 80's albums by Slayer, Anthrax, Uncle Neil, R.E.M and many more

maybe not the top 3 but a few not mentioned yet.

    Van Halen "1984"
    Peter Gabriel "So"
    Dire Straits "Brothers in Arms"
Yes "90215" - much prefer classic Yes but this was still a pretty good 80s record

Metallica Master of Puppets is the only album that needs to be on the list
BUt throw on Joshua Tree and Thriller or Appetite, or Diesel and Dust, or Workbook (Mould), or Synchronicity, or nothings shocking, or pyromania, licensed to ill, or Pretty Hate Machine, or Ride The Lightning, or Justice, or Kill Em All, or BAck In Black or Purple Rain too

  • U2 - The Joshua Tree (my fav album of all time)
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
    INXS - Listen Like Thieves

Could easily come up with a list of another 20 or so that would be equally at home in my top 3 (Depeche Mode, Iron Maiden, GnR, Queen, The Smiths, New Order, etc.) and I can't believe myself, that I left Purple Rain or Sign o' the Times out

and THEN in early 1991 he dropped whenever we wanted which is probably my fave EVER from him

That is definitely an awesome album... I didn't really discover Dylan until I was older though. The 80s albums that I thought of were ones that I actually listened to in the 80s. I guess all the many 80s albums that I fell in love with later - stuff like Dylan, Bowie, and Tom Petty, are more just albums to me, with no decade really attached to them in my mind.

I did this a few years ago with their Top 500 albums, I have acquired a lot of them and continue to pick them up when I see them.
I did the same thing and a lot of the albums on that list of 500 make up my vinyl and cassette wishlists.

Pretty Hate Machine is painful to listen to now for me. It sounds sooooo dated. I don't think the youth would give it a second listen. Huge album at the time though.

    Completely forgot about Nothing's Shocking!!!

I'd throw shout at the devil in the mix too. That's still a beast of an album. Redhot would kill today.

Yeah, those four albums in succession were the peak of Mellencamp. I had a Lonesome Jubilee T-shirt, that I wore till it fell apart!
I have most of his stuff , but these albums are the only ones I regularly listen to. I loved Big Daddy, even though it was less successful than the earlier ones. Jackie Brown is one of my favourite songs of his and Pop Singer was a perfect single. Saw him tour Australia on the Whenever We Wanted tour and it was such a relaxed and cool vibe for a concert.
