compared to what ticketmaster is considering doing i think scalping isn't that bad of a way to go.

from what i understand for all major events will turn into auction based buying. thus the market will dictate how much a certain show is worth. it's going to be that way for sporting events soon from what i've read. ticketmaster is bullshit.

theyre taking advantage of free market capitalism... anyone can do it.

edit: now i see the automatic buying part- thats BULLSHIT!

i thought it was just people buying some tix and then re-selling them- not in mass amounts like they actually are.

yeah, and who would have thought that ticket master would turn into the halfway decent good guy? i mean, at this point they are just trying to get in on the deal. but like the dude from ticket master said, they would rather not deal with automated brokers.
take that for what its worth, but hell, at least TM is feeling our pain a bit.

    its all a scam.

Thank god PJ's fan club has ways to keep that from happening to as large as an extent for fan club tickets.

But this pissed me off. If only we could go back to having to wait in line. I'd go back just for this reason.

Yeah, I still don't quite get the "people in India" part, but I know that's why I didn't have a chance for EV on Ticketmaster.

So, I had to use TM's subsidiary, Stubhub

This is another fine example of profit-motive ruining another experience. Free markets and capitalism are one thing, but now we're in a state of hyper-capitalism that is not bound by any sense of right and wrong. The profit-motive has attained almost religious-like status for people and the destructive force it's reaping on the world is everywhere. What should be a simple evening out to go to an event gets twisted into schemes and scams that frankly most Americans can no longer afford. And it further widens the gap between haves and have-nots. I'm all for free markets and letting the consumer decide where to spend their money, but it's all out-of-control and putting us all on a path of self-destruction.

The scalper programmer dude is messed up, but Ticketmaster is almost worse because of their blatant hypocrisy. They do not care AT ALL about the consumer and "fans." They are a huge corporation that is only interested in the bottom line, like Sony and all the rest. I would not be surprised if they made a bid to buy the scalping programmer's company and fold it into their service. As someone pointed out, they already have their own scalping scam going on with TicketExchange - a blatant, no apologies, officially-endorsed scalping operation that takes a cut of all the marked-up rip-off tickets. The only difference between them and the scalping programmer is who makes the profit, plain and simple. Make no mistake, Ticketmaster has absolutely no problem selling you a $3000 concert ticket, as long as they get their cut. They won't knock the price back to $50 "for the fans."

Thankfully Pearl Jam doesn't believe in the ugly profiteering that Ticketmaster flaunts. Fans of other artists are not so lucky. Madonna not only charges $350 for the good seats at her shows, she has just struck a deal with Stub Hub to get a cut of all the resold tickets from her 2008 tour! How greedy can you get!? On the one hand an artist should get a cut of the ticket price and not shut out, but on the other hand it is just blatant exploitation and gouging your fans.

I get what you're saying about the market deciding the price. But the problem with that is it shuts out people with lower incomes. The price gets dictated by whoever has got the most money to blow. Meanwhile the person working a job making $8/hr and has been a huge fan for 15 years gets priced out completely. Some may say "Well tough luck" but that's a sure way to have a lot of angry fans out there who are basically being told to get lost until they can give the band more money.

It all depends on what you value more - making your music available to your entire fanbase or selling out to the highest bidder and saying "screw the fanbase."

the lot of them are scalping bastards! Ticketmaster included!
even if you are lucky enough to score tickets, you seem to be paying a 20% service charge (for what????) and then inflated shipping charges!
It is same the world over! here in australia, ticketek and ticketmaster both charge about $9 for registered post on tickets, GA tickets have to be sent registered. They charge $4 for normal post! In reality, registered post costs $2 and normal post costs 50 Cents!
Surely they are the ones that are collecting the extra money from the Postage,
    not Australia post!

rewind to the summer of 1996 when we had to call Pearl Jam directly to get tickets. they were mailed. sure there were glitches. but it makes you appreciate the effort that went into how pearl jam tried to fight this sort of thing even without the internet.
I love to turn you on
