What you should think when going to a show

ehbaconehbacon Posts: 1,971
People remember their favorite shows as being perfect nights, anything negative about it being blocked from memory. Then they go to shows and compare them to that perfect night, creating insane expectations that will never be reached.

I say treat every concert like it's your first. From someone who's only been to one PJ concert, I can assure you that I've done this 100% of the time and it has worked fabulously for me.

Don't try to recreate something you've already experienced, take in the show as a completely different experience every time. It isn't your 10th, 15th, 30th, 50th show. It's your first show. You've never seen that show, and you will never see it again, so enjoy it.

PS to anyone considering making a complaint thread, here's some advice:

nope, just sick of people complaining about the dumbest of things, especially about shows. Every time i read something like that I just can't help but think that my mind would be absolutely blown if I were there; and this person is whining about the most minor of things.

I totally agree with you! Live in the moment and appreciate it for what it is, not what you expect it to be. I've never left a pj show disappointed. Every single show was special for some reason. I'm grateful for every show I've attended

very good advice. Sometimes people get too caught up in song-chasing and setlist-comparing. I went through a string where I was caught up in it a bit. So much better just going and enjoying.

LOL. I actually kinda agree with the OP but this thread title is just laughable. Telling people how to think?? I love PJ but this place is just flat out ridiculous sometimes.

I am definitely guilty of that. I need to appreciate what I am hearing more. Rather than "oh joy Eldery Woman again" (sarcasm). I should appreciate it as I did 21 years ago. I won't have that many more chances. I can be excited to get a new song. It was OK of me to lose my freaking mind the first time I heard Breath. But if I am thinking about what's next during Evenflow, I am missing out to a degree.

Good advice, though easier said than done.

I just don't understand song chasing. Going to shows JUST to hear a song you've been spending gobs of money chasing? In this way and others I love the OPs comments about just going to the show and enjoying it for what it is, not what it wasn't.

I am definitely a song chaser, so Fenway 1 was a dream show for me, but nothing is ruined for me if I don't get a new song. At MSG 2, other than that Cheap Trick cover, I had heard every other song they played before, but I still had the time of my life. It just becomes a little more special if you happen to catch that song you've always wanted to hear. But yeah, I don't understand people who would be disappointed if they don't get new rarities at every show.

    That's true.
If I see a song that I've never seen before it's great, and I do want to hear as many PJ songs live as I can in my lifetime. However, if I'm actually at a show it would never even cross my mind to think about the setlist or what's wrong with it. I am lost in the moment at any concert. If something that I consider really special happens to be played I go ape shit, but in the end I really don't care what PJ plays when I'm there to see them.... as long as it's not Ole.;)
What I care more about is when they play just a phenomenal, amazing bunch of songs that I would love to see.... and I'm not at the show. Which is almost every single show, lol.

    summed it up perfectly, PJS.

Just like assuming everyone with a GA ticket is sleeping on the sidewalk to get rail, there is absolutely no reason to think that someone who is "chasing" a particular song is ONLY going to shows to hear that song, or spending gobs of money to do so. There's always a song I hope to hear, always. If it plays, the elation that I feel in that moment is both indescribable and inimitable. If that song doesn't get played, after the show I've usually forgotten about it because I'm super excited about something else that DID.

The new normal here!! Complaining about show, merch line, crowd, security, video film quality, 10c ticket sales, 10c seat, etc....... AND THEN. Complaining about the complainers! AND NOW, LIKE ME RIGHT NOW, complaining about the people that complain about the complainers...Jesus Christ!! I recall going to a show years ago and thinking it felt flat and I thought they weren't into it. A few years later I picked up the bootleg and was blown away at how good the show was. I laughed to myself that it was me! I must've been tired or having an off day. The boot is a fav of mine now.
