I think it is what you make of it. I'm not a fan of stadium shows per se, but I've seen club and theater shows with great bands that were just meh. Saw Guns & Roses at Fed Ex field in DC in June and it was awesome, easily one of the best shows I've seen this year. And if you know anything about stadiums, Fed Ex Field is the absolute worst major stadium in North America. Not even a close second. And we still had a great time. So it can be fun.

I thought AC/DC at Wrigley last September sounded great. It was my first stadium show. I was right next to the GA section though.

Seen acdc a few times. Stadiums and arenas. Some of the best sound in the business. Clear, loud, punchy as hell.

I don't have much interest in seeing ANY show at a stadium for my own reasons (including sound, inability to see much, etc). Those who have attended stadium shows and think they're worth it, can you tell me what's so great about them?

Do not use this chance to get all over me either, I have a chance to go a Fenway show, and really would like to know why I should take the chance. Thanks

I have never seen a concert in a baseball stadium, I need to try it once before making an opinion on them.
I saw PJ in April and June of this year, so adding 1 show in August is perfect to hold me over through the inevitable vacation they will take for the next 12-18 months.
I have vacation days to use, and what a better way to use them than by giving myself a reason to head up to Boston?

  • Stadiums are fine depending on where you are and the wind. A strong wind will generally play havoc with the sound especially the further back you get. Other than that, as folks have said - it really is a great summertime party and bands tend to bring it to "fill the stadium with sound."

Obviously, the bigger the stadium, seeing the band can be a problem. So, if it's important to you to see the strings move, I can see why stadiums would be a turn off.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

I have been worried about the sound at Fenway. I've heard some horror stories. I did read that a new sound system was put in recently...we'll see. I'm in the 20th row on Mike's side for Friday so it will be fine for me. Sunday in the Grandstand, so probably not so good

When Fenway first started doing shows, the sound was ATROCIOUS. They had speakers down around home plate that were on a delay to project the sound into the grandstands, but it just made everything echo. After a few shows there I vowed to never return...

... but the new sound system is pretty great, especially given the strange dimensions and acoustics of the park. I went to Petty on a whim a few summers ago and noticed how great it sounded (from the loge, 3rd base side). Was in the grandstand between home and first for the Foo Fighters and it sounded fantastic. And sound for Sir Paul was great too (sat in the loge, closer to home plate).

I don't think the sound quality is an issue there anymore. Its actually become one of my favorite large outdoor venues in the area (not that there is much competition... Great Woods sucks, Gillette seems to really struggle with the sound... the Pavilion in the Seaport is pretty awesome though). My only gripe is that they have the stage covered on the sides, so if you are sitting at an extreme angle, you can't really see anything on the stage.

    Anyway... enjoy the show!

The thing I dislike most about outdoor shows is that you're a victim of weather conditions. I'm not sure I've EVER been to an outdoor show of any kind that wasn't at least somewhat ruined by the elements. It's always been too hot, too wet, too stormy, etc..... I don't like worrying about those things or suffering through those kinds of conditions. So indoors is always a better option for me unless you're talking about a REALLY bad sounding indoor venue (Queen Elizabeth Theatre, for example, which is worse than a concert staged in a mud hole during a snow storm, lol).

That's too bad. I remember Pearl Jam shows like Gorge '05 and Calgary '09 having perfect weather. Sunny, but not too hot (low 20s maybe.. aka 70f). When I used to go the lollapalooza's/edgefest's/ozzfest in Vancouver the weather always seemed perfect.

Worst weather I ever endured was AC/DC in Edmonton about 7 years ago. Thunder/Lightning storms surrounded the stadium. It pissed rain the whole time, and there was lightning everywhere. It ended up being an epic epic show. AC/DC played through it all. Because the band edured it the crowd endured. One of the most memborable shows I've ever been too. Lightning everywhere while the band is playing thunderstruck.. lol.

I also would prefer it if outdoor shows didn't start until it's dark out. Not a fan of the daylight concerts. Anyway, it's not like outdoor shows are a deal breaker for me. I just prefer indoor for various reasons. I would indeed like to attend Red Rocks though, since I've heard the sound is so good and it looks so cool.

I've had Fenway tix for months and until your post didn't even realize that it will be light out during the first hour or more of the show

There's something about PJ outdoors that does it for me.

Seeing them at a big stadium also increases the sense of being part of something special and experiencing 60,000 singing along to your favourite band is amazing. Thankfully I've always been in GA and managed to get in a good spot for sound and seeing the stage.

I'm glad you've decided to go to Fenway, you won't regret it, I wish I was there!

Never been to a stadium show, and don't have a desire to do so. I prefer arenas, that are indoor and with good sound.

I also like outdoor shows, but there's a big difference between an amphitheatre and a stadium. Stadiums are huge and designed mostly for football/baseball games with capacity usually around 50k (give or take). Amphitheatre's are designed for music. All the seats face the stage, the acoustics are designed for it, and capacity is usually close to that of an arena (usually around 20k.. maybe 30k for a big one).

I've seen all sorts of outdoor shows. I think many of my favourite PJ gigs have been outside. Seattle '98, Gorge 05/06, Calgary '09, Pemberton '16. The only really big issue with Stadiums (for me) is their size. It's not so good being in a stadium's nosebleed seats. If you're close at a stadium, i think it's even better than being close at an arena.

The shows felt special because of their setting. I would definitely attend ball park shows in the future.

Agreed. I loved Wrigley three years ago and Fenway this year. I'd consider others in the future but it would depend on the stadium. Dodger Stadium feels like it might be an intriguing option. Soldier Field. Not sure what else though.

I did. I was talking to a friend before we left for Boston who said that sound was a real concern because he was at Dead & Co. And it wasn't that great. But I was really impressed w/ the sound of night 2! Had a great time.

Obviously, it's still so far out that forecasts are meaningless but ... the 10-day currently calls for scattered thunderstorms for night 1 at Wrigley.

I'm laughing about it. For now.

But I would also go see PJ play anywhere.
