Ed and the band hit high emotion, change 'Long Road'

Chicago (night 1 I think) 2009. Person close to the band passes and they open with 'Long Road'. Ed vocalizes several parts different than I'd ever heard before - and I think that changed the song moving forward. Had he ever vocalized those parts ("How I'd wish for you today") like that before 2009? I was at the Chicago show and it was good chills hearing this - besides just a solid performance. Anyone else there?

  • They also played new songs from Backspacer before the record was released, and a still never been topped version of "The Needle and the Damage Done". Whew! They were originally trying to schedule both Chicago shows for Alpine Valley but didn't work out. Good thing they got back around to it 2 years later for PJ20!

When I think of a perfect version of 'Long Road' I think of this one. Huge emotion and Ed just absolutely nailed it with his vocals. I've never heard him sing it like that.....probably never will again. I was at both of those shows. My favorite 2 night run i've seen.

That was an awesome couple of the nights at the UC. Still crazy to me that those shows were the last time they played there. Wrigley shows will be cool, but I'd much rather see them at the UC.

I love many versions of Long Road but my personal favorite is from San Diego '06 with Ed telling the story of how LR came about and the passing of his high school teacher Clayton E. Leggit.

San diego is good but ed fucks up the middle part of the song unfortunately.
