11. Release

(Well, we did that together. When we woke up this morning this wasn’t something we had in mind. When we got told about the banner they were getting us I saw the number and just thought… Ed goes on to talk about how consistently great the audiences are in Philadelphia and the long relationship the band has had with the local crew in the building. He notes that Philly seems tough and intense. “I get the city of brotherly love but I know that brothers beat the shit out of each other…” Ed jokes that he hopes Bruce doesn’t hear about this..he slips into a Springsteen impression with Springsteen congratulating Ed on his “little flag”. The flag for Bruce Springsteen has 56 sold out shows. “we have some catching up to do”)

(Ed said singing the last song got him thinking about young women posting pictures on various social media outlets and seeking various positive indicators. “You don’t want to be doing that kind of thing. You shouldn’t care what other people think of you. You should just be yourself. He goes onto wish Willie Nelson a happy 83rd birthday. He asks if can drink to that even though he knows he should smoke to that. He sings a bit of Just Breathe with his Willie Nelson vocal style since Willie has covered the song. He then sings it in his own voice)

19. Just Breathe
20. All Or None
(Ed tells the story of Roger Waters writing the next song because an experience he had at the Spectrum in 1977. Ed dedicates the song to Paul and his son Tyler. Tyler is a young boy with complicated health problems. )

Ten. Sheesh. Breakerfall. Throw your hatred down... Wow. Star Spangled Banner... Goosebumps.

It was obvious the boys were amped for tonight.

32nd show since '98. 10c seats in 102 row 1 (visiting hockey bench). Usually my friend and I who tour together are like the old guys from the Muppets critiquing everything. Not tonight. This is my new #1 (over a few other all time shows). Got the tease as band came on and had spotlight on the "Pearl Jam 10 South Philly Sell Outs" banner. When they opened with Once for second night in a row my friend and I looked at each other and knew right away something was up and "The Ten Show" was in play. Got Release for first time since my 3rd ever show in '98 so that's been my white whale. Band non-stop until they got to Release when Ed teared up giving intro. Crowd on fire from the start with all the Ten songs and great energy from band. Band more interactive with each other and seemed to feed off the crowd. Really seemed to enjoy themselves. Even the usual old standby singalongs like Corduroy and Better man better than usual, especially interesting arrangement for Corduroy. Thought for a second with Breakerfall we were getting Binaural too. Also little Led Zep Over The Hills and Far Away tease in one of the encores. Great rarities like Bee Girl, All or None, Throw Your Hatred Down. My first Comfortably Numb which was another highlight for me. Can't go wrong with Leash. Awesome energy from crowd in second encore. Incredible Star Spangled Banner at the end to bring the house down. I'm not the type to hype every show I go to, but this is an all timer.

Having been at the Melb '09 show where from memory 9 Ten songs were played, I can only imagine the response from the crowd knowing what was being played. Every fukn lyric, note and chord! I often here people refer to Melb 09 gig as the 'ten' show.
But this will be now forever known as the ten show.
Enjoyed following the set from here in Australia! Bravo!

I would take these two Philly shows and put them head to head against any other 2-night night stand for the band.

Ten!!!! My other show was Greenville (I had Raleigh), so I got two albums! And Release was my white whale! I feel so lucky!

As someone else said, they sounded really tight. They looked like they were having a great time. And Eddie sounded really good. How do these guys do it?!?

Wow. What a show. After 37 shows, I thought I had seen it all. Especially after getting oceans for the first time last night. But this band is so ridiculously good, that you just never know what they're gonna do. They really treat philly great.

Awesome concert! Two highlights were the woman near me knew every word and sang her lungs out. I sang all the songs I knew. Release was. . . It was like we all wanted it to be good, and it was.

  • I really dont even know where to start with tonight. Ten front to back, the crowd went absolutely insane when Alive was the third song in, right there everyone knew we were getting Ten . And finally to hear "Release" live was just amazing and very emotional, actually just hearing Ten front to back was very emotional. But the speech Eddie gave right before Release is what hit me hard, my mom passed away a few years back and she gave me a copy of Ten when i was a kid so the speech on top of Ten front to back really hit me, but I dont mean to sound sentimental.

Anyway highlights for me were Ten obviously, Breakerfall (I think a lot of people thought we might be hearing Binaural front to back for a second as well), Who You Are, Bee Girl, All or None, Throw Your Hatred Down.

I hope Pearl Jam doesn't stay away from Philly for too long.

No, Ed couldnt have dropped the mic and walked out after Ten, there wouldve been a riot! Breakerfall was a cool way to get out of Ten mode... cause how else can you? The show was awesome. I posted how last night was great. So was tonight. Totally different vibes. Thursday night had a puzzle like song to song vibe from album to album. The fact that the Ten Show was happening, changed the vibe- in a good way. So it was just different from one night to another. The first encore was great. This was my first time hearing Comfortably Numb live.... aside from PJ this is one of my all time fave songs. Wow, do they do it justice. Im sure people are freaking out over bee girl- which is so cool just seeing Ed and Jeff together- it just screams special. Love Jeff! But also, Throw your hatred down is a rarity. Both nights were so different in a good way, its hard to compare... Crowd was great both nights IMO. Cheers PJ, now onto MSG... how can a band continually top themselves? This one days time after time. We are lucky fans.

Release really was epic... usually it starts shows.. this time it was the finale of something special. And there was a poignant lead up to it. Describing how the song had deep meaning for Ed. Wow. The crowd supported each other and Ed through that song. There are I'm sure more technically sound versions of the song. But, the emotion throughout, and Philly fans bringing their Voice made this truly memorable
