Please spin it for me. Why is it okay to play Jazz Fest and take money from Shell Oil and also promote Shell Oil's brand? Why not boycott it?

I don't think they should cancel every performance. But that is why cancelling NC was ignorant of them. They opened themselves up to this criticism. Why is it okay to take money from Shell Oil?

    What's wrong with Shell?

Pearl Jam should also stop producing music on vinyl LPs as they are a byproduct of oil.

In fact PJ should stop touring by plane and bus and get themselves a fleet of Teslas to tour in.

Oh wait it takes oil to produce Teslas

    Damn

Maybe PJ should tour on foot and only play acoustic instruments that came from natural, organic, free trade ,non-gmo products that died of natural causes.

Doing those things is the same as playing a festival SPONSORED by Shell?

I agree. It is done. I think fans expressed enough displeasure on here and elsewhere and it was heard. Carrying it around and crusading does not help.

I like Shell. I don't know what is is, but the engine in my Honda seems to run a lot happier on Shell gas than most other gas.

Let it go...it happened 2 days ago and he just gave a horrible explanation last night and the jazz fest show is the next one. Its still relevant. I mean NOBODY is talking about the boycott anymore in terms of the positive it has done for repealing the law. But when you make a choice like that that has negative ramifications, then you need to live with it for a bit.

I think its fair for people like me to point out what hypocrites they are. Especially when I was so naive to believe they weren't like that.

Taking money from Shell Oil is a pretty big example of hypocrisy. I'm fine w/ accepting them as hypocrites (or if they apologized and said they made the wrong decision in cancelling NC). I'd like people blasting those fans for being critical of the band to at least acknowledge they are hypocrites. I don't think that is asking too much.

It doesn't really big me. Most festivals have many sponsers now. If your going to play festivals your probably going to play the odd one that has a sponser you don't entirely agree with.

Then again well use gas. Even PJ uses gas. How do you think they move themselves, their crew, and gear from venue to venue? It's not like PJ boycott's gas :) Like the rest of us they're avid users of it.

This really has nothing to do with what happened in Raleigh or the laws they are protesting. Stop comparing apples to oranges. They are one of many performers at this event. Even Al Gore uses petroleum....

Who is forcing them to play these festivals tho. Shell is a major sponsor for Jazz Fest. Its a lot different than just using gas to travel. This is playing a gig that they are sponsoring. If they played NC, I doubt their paycheck was coming anywhere close as directly from Shell Oil.

The point really is that you have to be very careful when you do something extreme and cancel on 48 hours notice. It can cause people to follow the money more carefully and bring on extra scrutiny to expose these acts as not being genuine but also ultimately about their bottom line. I think their personal economic interests were in cancelling that show over playing and donating.

Weird that Jazz Fest would even like to have Shell as a sponsor...

Could not see it happen in Sweden where festivals are moving towards all vegetarian food and stuff. Progressive.

If you think they are hypocrites but continue to listen to them and give them money then aren't you also a hypocrite? Maybe you should boycott them.

To an extent yea. I loved them for their music but also foolishly believed in the other stuff too. Now I think the other stuff is bogus. Makes me like them less but I'm still a fan of their music and their performances. Maybe not all about them as I was before. Maybe time will heal some wounds. I am certainly a hypocrite in many different aspects of my life though. I recognize it.
