Historically, a "whipping boy" was a young boy raised with the crown prince in many Euopean nations. When the prince misbehaved, the whipping boy was disciplined, since no one could lay hands on the future king. This was thought to have a psychological impact on the prince to bring him back into line. I guess that depends on the prince not being a narcissistic jerk. What were the odds of that?

We had very different images as to what happened to whip the cream @ the factory.
The 4 foot single tail whip is apparently the most popular and versatile size of whip, for those so inclined to use them for indoor purposes.
Not for outdoor use?

then would a cat-o-nine tails be more appropriate for indoor use?

The cat certainly has its uses, but it doesn't give you that satisfying crack, whereas the 4 foot single tail is short enough to be maneuverable in the sort of space you're likely to have inside while still delivering a cracking good time.
Just make sure you have enough clearance.

A sea whip is any one of several genera of corals of the order Gorgonacea (phylum Cnidaria), characterized by a long, whiplike growth and a variety of bright colours. The “whip” consists of a colony of tiny polyps that grow upon one another in a continuous single stem. Spicules, or needlelike structures, of lime embedded in the polyp body provide a firm but flexible support.
