    TOMAS YOUNG’S WAR Launch Event

    Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at 2:00pm

Mark Wilkerson discusses his latest book, Tomas Young’s War, the tragic yet life affirming story of a paralyzed Iraq War veteran who spent his last ten years battling heroically with his injuries, while courageously speaking against America's wars. With Phil Donahue and other special guests, to be announced.

Based on hours of interviews with Young and those close to him, Wilkerson's book puts the reader alongside Young as he struggles with life as a paralyzed veteran, suffering frustration and humiliation as he attempts to reenter society and resume as normal an existence as possible. It shows his fight to balance his precarious health with his drive to speak out for veterans care and against the war, and the impact his catastrophic injuries had on his family and his relationships.

Celebrate the release of Tomas Young's War (2016 Haymarket Books), which sheds light on many crucial but often overlooked issues such as veterans’ care, public attitudes toward the disabled, medical marijuana, and the terminally ill — a powerful testament to the true cost of war.

This event will start at 2PM. The bookstore will close for set-up at 1PM and doors for the event will re-open at 1:30PM.
$8 tickets guarantee entry, and can be used towards the price of Tomas Young's War, which will be for sale at the event for $24.

Tomas Young returned from Iraq a paralyzed war veteran, and spent his last ten years courageously speaking against America's wars while battling heroically with injuries.

A national speaking tour will begin May 2, remembering Tomas Young, his fight to balance struggles as a paralyzed veteran with his drive to speak out for veterans care and against the war.

Events will also celebrate the release of Tomas Young’s War, a new book by Mark Wilkerson with a Foreword by Phil Donahue, an emotional and powerful book that sheds light on many crucial but often overlooked issues such as veterans’ care, public attitudes toward the disabled, medical marijuana, and the terminally ill. Tomas Young’s War shares everything, as unflinchingly honest as Tomas himself: the depression, the pain, the love, and laughter...the life of this man whose world was turned upside down by an Iraqi bullet more than ten years ago. Throughout, it serves as a powerful testament to the true cost of war.

"I consider myself extremely fortunate to have known Tomas Young. I'm grateful that this powerful book of Mark Wilkerson's will allow readers to experience the strength, humor and wisdom that this strong-willed and courageous man maintained til the very end. I miss him intensely."
    —Eddie Vedder

Halfway through the book. Man it really puts things in perspective. Everyone should read this and then think about the next time they want their country to go to war.

Well that was amazing. Something I was not sure would ever happen happened. I met the lead singer of my favorite band and what felt even more significant as it was happening, I witnessed a very impassioned (and informative) talk from Ed, Phil Donohue and the author, Mark Wilkerson. There was also an audience Q&A and amazingly (got to ask a question!), we were able to meet the panel and they all signed our books. Talk about a jolt of energy after the post-MSG depression and the prospects of a PJ-less couple of months (well, until August at least...). Thank you to this message board for posting it! I only saw it at 1:55 pm and instinctively just ran to the subway, got there in 15 mins, got a seat easily and a signed book! Dreary Wednesday just became the best day ever.
