^^^ The whole country is in a weird and ugly phase. I often think of that classic from "Good Morning Vietnam" where collectively we don't know if we've "been shot, fucked, powder-burned or snake-bit".
No, I take that back- this applies to most of the world.
Off-top-of-my-head solution: More and better music, more shared culture, less stress on the environment, better recognition of the intrinsic value of all life, a good green smoke and coffee, coffee, coffee.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
I was very impressed with my Aunt yesterday at dinner. Not only did she cook for two days beforehand and like always put out a fantastic spread, she also shut down any and all political talk before it got going. Much to the chagrin of her Trump-fan husband, she was having none of it. Chef's house, chef's rules.
Jesus, What Dreams, your family interaction sounds beyond fucked up. Frankly, if my family members said shit like that I'd disown them, since i have no interest at all in being anywhere near people who can think that way (or not think, as the case may be). I am sorry you have such fanatics for family members. Sounds like you need to either avoid those people, or never ever talk about politics with them or near them again..... Wasn't there anyone in your family on your side of the fence???
Most of my family are Conservatives - I am very much the socialist black sheep, lol - and most of them are also somewhat racist as well IMO, and my dad even denies climate change, which is embarrassing, but they all still think Trump is an absolute lunatic, thank god. If any of them liked his crap i'd don't know how i could look them in the eye again.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata
It could certainly stir up some thought, don't you think? The article mentioned so many aspects that I have been discussing with friends and family too. It is kind of crazy that it all really seems to boil down to that. I shared the link here in order to spread the message. Better a little late than never, I thought
Please, Pearl Jam, consider a Benaroya Hall vinyl reissue!

Lol.
I can't help but wonder what types of battles occur in that house behind closed doors.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I would think that if she was in love with Trump... she'd be okay with a bit of spreading the word.
Regardless, good for her for recognizing the inherent problems discussing politics brings and having none of those problems where and when she didn't want them.

My niece was with me. She's a defector, but not until a few years after college. After being raised by my brother, she was an economics major in a conservative department funded by the Ayn Rand Institute. For awhile I thought I had lost her, too, but according to her, living in the real world changed her perspective. Thank God. But regardless, we were a couple of sheep surrounded by wolves. My mother tries to keep the peace, but not very well.
I've been having these stupid arguments with these people for all my adult life. It's just been ramped up the past year like everything else. I do take long breaks in between holidays. I hang with my mom and my niece on the off season. My brothers and I do live very different lives, to be sure.
I really just want this damned election to be over. It's this ugly and we don't even have nominees yet. I can't even fathom what it's going to be like after the conventions.
I would like to see a study on how many divorces or friendship separations are occuring in election years in America. Has anything like that ever been done before?

Yeah, this is how I feel as well. Ugly, snarky, lots of "in your face" shit.
And Leeze, some bit of solidarity on politics (as with religion - or not - or having children, big-ticket items etc.) are among those things where I could never be with someone of a dissimilar mind, going into it.
Based on my time here, I actually think on a scale of 0 to 10 for AMT snarkyness (o being we've all flat-lined from boredom and 10 being we've all killed each other off and flat-lined that way) we're at around a 4 or 5. I've seen way worse. Why heck for example, no one has accused me of selling books out of the back of a Prius lately and the only one calling anyone an old goat is me... referring to myself! And we've not seen any warnings from KAT lately and we know she has contributed here. I think overall we're doing OK here.

I know I can chime in (late or not!) but it's been a weird and at times ugly vibe in some conversations lately.

Getting high and drinking coffee is part of the solution to the problem in your country?
"...I changed by not changing at all..."
myoung, not sure if your comment was about that or not...
