    CHANGES:
I still don't know what I was waiting for
And my time was running wild
    A million dead-end streets
And every time I thought I'd got it made
It seemed the taste was not so sweet
So I turned myself to face me
But I've never caught a glimpse
Of how the others must see the faker
I'm much too fast to take that test

    Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
    (Turn and face the strange)
    Ch-ch-changes
Don't want to be a richer man
    Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
    (Turn and face the strange)
    Ch-ch-changes
Just gonna have to be a different man
    Time may change me
    But I can't trace time

I watch the ripples change their size
    But never leave the stream
    Of warm impermanence and
So the days float through my eyes
But still the days seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
    Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're going through

    Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
    (Turn and face the strange)
    Ch-ch-changes
Don't tell them to grow up and out of it
    Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
    (Turn and face the strange)
    Ch-ch-changes
    Where's your shame
You've left us up to our necks in it
    Time may change me
    But you can't trace time

    Strange fascination, fascinating me
    Changes are taking the pace
    I'm going through

    Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
    (Turn and face the strange)
    Ch-ch-changes
Oh, look out you rock 'n rollers
    Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
    (Turn and face the strange)
    Ch-ch-changes
Pretty soon now you're gonna get older
    Time may change me
    But I can't trace time
I said that time may change me
    But I can't trace time

Shattering news to wake up to this morning. My heart and thoughts go out to Bowie's family and friends. He has long been my favourite musician, and he will remain on my list of artist whom I've never seen live.

today I cried for the first time in a long time, but at the same time I smiled and couldn't help thinking it is "typical" Bowie, leaving the world like that, no one can ever replace him, and it will have a huge impact on the music scene bigger than the death of Elvis and Lennon ( my opinion )

So sad to hear of David Bowie's passing........he was a true visionary, who knew how to reinvent himself and keep his music fresh. He is definitely up there in terms of artists who have the greatest bodies of work.

I was lucky to have seen him live on several different tours from 1983 to 2004.....always a great show!

So hard for me to grasp this sad news...
Just picked up 'Blackstar' yesterday and blasted it loudly.
    Mind blowing album.
Amazed at how Bowie just gets better and better, always exploring new territory.
Thought how wonderful it is that he looks and sounds so vibrant at 69 years old.
And then I woke up this morning...

Shocked this morning when I read the news.... I had no idea that he was sick...but
I would wonder from time to time...."what's Bowie up to? Haven't heard from him in a while"
he was timeless... always around.. like baseball in the summer... sometimes I took him for granted... Marc Bolan was dead before I was born. John Lennon was killed when I was 3 years old.
I am glad I got to share the Earth with such a wonderful artist... I will be spinning Ziggy Stardust tonight.

Look Up, David Bowie’s in Heaven in Eerily Foreshadowing ‘Lazarus’ Video

    The Reverend Shawn Amos
    January 11, 2016

Look up here, I’m in heaven
I’ve got scars that can’t be seen
I’ve got drama, can’t be stolen
    Everybody knows me now
    – ”Lazarus,” David Bowie (2016)

Last Thursday, one day before David Bowie’s 69th birthday, he released the video for his single, “Lazarus.” The following day, Jan. 8, his 25th album, Blackstar, was released to great critical acclaim.
And two days later, on Jan 10, David Bowie shockingly died, after an 18-month battle with cancer.
It’s impossible to watch ”Lazarus” and not think you are seeing one of our great artists choreographing his own death. This is as close to a goodbye as we’ll get from David Bowie. Bowie wasn’t much for hellos or goodbyes. He always came and went as he pleased.

Or maybe it’s the perfect goodbye. Bowie’s death was “sudden” only because his long slow illness was his secret. But it gave him time to plan his affairs. “Lazarus” is a man writing his own obituary in all the impressionistic, oblique language we would expect from someone who so generously gave his art while viciously guarding his life.
In the Bible, Lazarus was the brother of Mary, whom Jesus raised from the dead. It’s fertile ground for a songwriter dying of cancer. In the video, Bowie lies on a hospital bed, screws in his eyes, outstretched like Jesus.

Look up here, man, I’m in danger
I’ve got nothing left to lose
I’m so high it makes my brain whirl
Dropped my cell phone down below

Bowie writhes on the bed. Was he in pain in this final days? The announcement from his Twitter account says he died peacefully in his sleep. In the video, a shadowy female reaches from underneath the bed.

By the time I got to New York
I was living like a king
Then I used up all my money
I was looking for your a–

We see the writer furiously getting out his thoughts on paper. He cannot write fast enough, and the paper isn’t large enough to contain his words. He writes down the side of the desk. He’s running out of time. Is he writing a goodbye letter? His last will and testament? Nonsensical ramblings induced by pain meds?
Writers, fans, and curiosity-seekers will undoubtedly pore over the lyrics to Blackstar looking for confessional clues. They’ll come up empty. Bowie was not into clues. Bowie was a painter. Of images. Of words. Of imaginary places borne of fantasies and nightmares. He was a man who always looked up to the heavens. He knew we were made of stars and all destined to return to space and dust. Ashes to ashes.

The above photo — used as the cover of David Bowie’s 1977 album Heroes — sums up everything. He was the man everyone loved and no one knew. David Bowie is… was… that most precious of artists. He gave us all of his art yet none of himself. It was none of our business. His sexuality, marriage, fatherhood, and even his cancer were his and his alone.

    This way or no way
    You know, I’ll be free
    Just like that bluebird
Now ain’t that just like me.

The final act of “Lazarus” ends with Bowie backing himself into an armoire and closing himself shut in it. Is he hiding? Burying himself alive? Dying?
You’re free, David Bowie, back to outer space from whence you came. And we’re left here to wonder.

The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

Blackstar is great. I had pre-ordered and the vinyl was delivered on Friday. I played it Friday night and then most of the day Saturday. I was discussing how prolific he was with some friends over the weekend. Who else puts out an album like that at the age of 69, cuts a video like "Blackstar", and has a musical playing on Broadway? Now we know he's been staring down cancer the whole time too. Visconti said in an interview that they left some tracks on the floor so there should be more to hear on top of an already overwhelmingly stunning catalog, but I love how the last lyrics we have from the guy who consistently re-invented himself are, "I can't give everything away."

Same here. I woke up hoping the news I got late last night was just a bad dream. Not so. I've been spinning all my favorite Bowie songs this morning. Some made me smile, some brought tears, all amazing work from one the the greatest ever.

  • I read it this morning before work and cried. I was shocked and it hurt. I've grown to love Bowie over the last 3 years or so. During my struggles in that time, I turned to him a great deal. His music is an adventure, always worthy of reliving the journey to find new things. You can never really get enough of it, it's often dense and worthy of study. He's been on my mind all day, so hard to believe. Goodbye, Spaceboy.

Gotta say that some of what I've read here about Bowie has been as beautiful and hard-hitting as the man's music.

    Thank you.
