Much like the religion itself this thread can be interped to mean whatever you think it means.

    Good point.
Then like all religions, the text should be this:

  • Islam, like most religions, is practised by a wide range of people in a great variety of ways. My closest friend is a Bosnian Muslim. Like me, she doesn't drink and for her it's more a personal choice than a manifestation of any religious belief. Other than that, you'd be hard pushed to identify her as a Muslim at all. It's easy to stereotype and it's hardly surprising that the image most of us have of Muslims involves hijabs and radical beliefs.

Any time I find myself falling into that trap, I try to remind myself of my friend and her family, who also happen to have come to Ireland as refugees from the war in Bosnia.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that although all religions can inspire disgusting and abhorrent behaviour, it is still only a small minority of the members of any religion that choose to commit such acts in its name. I also strongly suspect that in the absence of religion, such individuals would find another reason.

Man Already Knows Everything He Needs To Know About Muslims

SALINA, KS—Local man Scott Gentries told reporters Wednesday that his deliberately limited grasp of Islamic history and culture was still more than sufficient to shape his views of the entire Muslim world.

Gentries, 48, said he had absolutely no interest in exposing himself to further knowledge of Islamic civilization or putting his sweeping opinions into a broader context of any kind, and confirmed he was "perfectly happy" to make a handful of emotionally charged words the basis of his mistrust toward all members of the world's second-largest religion.

"I learned all that really matters about the Muslim faith on 9/11," Gentries said in reference to the terrorist attacks on the United States undertaken by 19 of Islam's approximately 1.6 billion practitioners. "What more do I need to know to stigmatize Muslims everywhere as inherently violent radicals?"

"And now they want to build a mosque at Ground Zero," continued Gentries, eliminating any distinction between the 9/11 hijackers and Muslims in general. "No, I won't examine the accuracy of that statement, but yes, I will allow myself to be outraged by it and use it as evidence of these people's universal callousness toward Americans who lost loved ones when the Twin Towers fell."

"Even though I am not one of those people," he added.

When told that the proposed "Ground Zero mosque" is actually a community center two blocks north of the site that would include, in addition to a public prayer space, a 500-seat auditorium, a restaurant, and athletic facilities, Gentries shook his head and said, "I know all I'm going to let myself know."

Gentries explained that it "didn't take long" to find out as much about the tenets of Islam as he needed to. He said he knew Muslims stoned their women for committing adultery, trained for terrorist attacks at fundamentalist madrassas, and believed in jihad, which Gentries described as the thing they used to justify killing infidels.

"All Muslims are at war with America, and I will resist any attempt to challenge that assertion with potentially illuminating facts," said Gentries, who threatened to leave the room if presented with the number of Muslims who live peacefully in the United States, serve in the country's armed forces, or were victims themselves of the 9/11 attacks. "Period."

"If you don't believe me, wait until they put your wife in a burka," Gentries continued in reference to the face-and-body-covering worn by a small minority of Muslim women and banned in the universities of Turkey, Tunisia, and Syria. "Or worse, a rape camp. That's right: For reasons I am content being totally unable to articulate, I am choosing to associate Muslims with rape camps."

Over the past decade, Gentries said he has taken pains to avoid personal interactions or media that might have the potential to compromise his point of view. He told reporters that the closest he had come to confronting a contrary standpoint was tuning in to the first few seconds of an interview with a moderate Muslim cleric before hastily turning off the television.

"I almost gave in and listened to that guy defend Islam with words I didn't want to hear," Gentries said. "But then I remembered how much easier it is to live in a world of black-and-white in which I can assign the label of 'other' to someone and use him as a vessel for all my fears and insecurities."

Added Gentries, "That really put things back into perspective."

Every time I think of different religions and the way it is practiced, I think how they are all just a different form of crazy.

Yep...it really just breaks down to whether or not it is crazy to talk to invisible people and believe that they hear you and respond in some fashion.

Just bat shit insane when you put some thought to it.

Did anyone else get to watch the video in the opening post before the OP deleted it? I only caught the first few minutes but it was interesting. Two guys took a bible and replaced the cover with that of the quran. Then they read some of the more disturbing passages to people on the street and asked their opinions which, shock of shocks, were not positive.

I think I saw the same video circulating on facebook. It's amazing how people forget their own religion. The old testament is the bloodiest set of books ever assembled. It's like a Tarantino movie. Raping children, mass murders and sacrifices, etc.

I have lots of Muslim friends, but this is crazy. In Britain more Muslims join ISIS than join the British army

Jimmy, I did as well, just a bit about the premise. That could be applied to any book of faith. Taking any tracts so literally that they spur hate and the need to dictate how others should live? Obviously fucked up.

Equally obvious, most (many) don't live that way.

Man, I wish Nart were still around these parts. Always appreciated his perspective.

Freedom of religion is a founding principle in this country but not if it includes Murder

What does that even mean? Are you saying Islam "includes Murder"?
If that was the case, with nearly 2 billion practitioners, we would all be dead already.

That's all in the Bible as well, and was all practiced at many points in history. In a couple hundred years Islam will catch up to how old Christianity is now, maybe then you can start judging.

Close what I believe (or non-believe). I have great faith in the idea that what we can't understand is a mystery. But stated even better is this:

"I don't believe in putting faith in spirituality. That's just a crutch for those who don't belong. I can assure you, I'm no advocate of New Age philosophies."

    "Belong Where?"

"On this Earth, in these waters. If you have to ask why and if you need to demand answers to impossible questions, well then you don't belong. That's what it's all about- belonging, being part of something unfathomable and letting that which you seek come to you."
-Paul Watson, Ocean Warrior, pp 195-196

A bit later, Watson talks about using intuition to track down illegal drift-net fishers and then this:

Bob smiled. "So you concede some credit to woo-woo faith."

I laughed. "Nothing I would admit."

"But," said Bob, "you are putting your faith in intuition about the [sea] drift taking us to the drift-netters."

"No, Bob, there's nothing spiritual about my intuition, which has never failed me yet, and besides, I look on intuition as a normal biological function. The secret is to not complicate your mind with trivialities."

That article itself is an excellent example of extremism. Fight extremism with extremism doesn't really make much sense does it?

Right? You'd think that people would know better by now that fighting extremism with extremism is basically the cause of a large portion of the worst things in human history. And I'm saying that as someone absolutely does acknowledge that Islamic extremism is a big problem. Here in the AMT I once got absolutely roasted for saying that 20% of Muslims could be considered to have extremist views. It was a pretty hard time for me on the AMT. But that doesn't mean for one second, in my mind, that that should mean we have to start compromising our humanity and compassion and our common sense and start employing bigotry and an extremism of our own out of fear of that number.
