A dark day in Pearl Jam history: 13 years ago today (riot act)

A dark day: On Nov 12, 2012, Pearl Jam released the "work" riot act upon an unsuspecting public, setting into motion a series of events that would echo through time. The Riot Act Wars resulted, the PJ internet community was torn, the drinking of Natural Light was shamed, and thus many of the followers of YIELD were exiled into dark corners of the web. The Pearl Jam boards were never the same.

"The stories (YIELD, Natty Light, the YIELD COUNCIL, YIELD NIGHT), they were true. All of them."

Sorry, but just didn't care what Ed thought during this time frame.
  • Funny, I wanted to make a shirt that said PEARL JAM: NOW MORE THAN EVER to wear to the 2003 shows because I thought what they were doing was so great and important.

Fanch dude, I still smile when I think about your Natty Light reviews of Riot Act and Yield... jeeez that was a long time ago and I swear I could probably still quote them if I thought about it long enough. I'm drunk and wanna talk about Riot Act or whatever... that was the shit.

I still have a soft spot for Riot Act. It was the tour I saw the most shows on and I think the tour that set up sort of "the future" of Pearl Jam as far as lengthy shows, set list change ups, etc... I WAS AT STATE COLLEGE FOR CHRISSAKE. That was the precursor to Philly 4 2009, Wrigley (pre-weather-delay), every show in 2013-14 that went over 3 hours etc.

Hey man, good to "see" you. I totally get what you are saying about the 2003 tour; in fact that's how I feel about the 2006 because I had a similar experience then. I didn't get to see the YIELD tour (for many reasons) and it's really too bad.

Yes, that was all very long ago, a lifetime ago it seems. The YFC FAITHFULL versus Yosi and all the riot actors...lol. Great stuff. Those who remember, those like you, can carry on and tell the young ones how the Synergy world was before The Riot Act Wars and the fanbase parted.

Hey he put in the Bushleaguer Uniondale disaster... (and clip of Thumbing My Way video) that was about it. :)

PJ20 was about 75% PJ5. Still great but hardly talked much about post-95. At least not in detail.

By the way Fanch, how many Natty Lights did Ghost get?

I'd love to see a Director's Cut of Single Video Theory. They really glossed over the YIELD period in PJ20.

Ghost? lol, probably not very many.

The Riot Act Wars actually happened on the boards.  It was horrible and it divided the fan base back then.  Seriously.

I still hold to the believe that Riot Act is the pinnacle achievement of Pearl Jam and one facet of the Pearl Jam Holy Trinity:

    Riot Act, the Father
    Yield, the Son
    No Code, the Holy Spirit
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”

I do believe I've had a few "WTF" responses at times.  And those were the nice ones.

interesting. I saw them on Yield tour, but then missed out on a decade plus of shows for a variety of reasons. My gf at the time bought me Riot Act as a birthday present. I think it's a really strong album, although it's taken me time to appreciate Can't Keep and I Am Mine. Save You is one of the best rockers they've ever made IMHO. Was the schism music-based or politics-based (or both)?

Seems to me a lot of it was based on the love or hate of Bu$hleager.  Which is too bad, really because that one was tucked toward the end of the record and the live versions were great performance art.  The album's music itself I don't see as a problem.  The songs you mentioned- great examples.  "Can't Keep"- what a great composition with it's smokey jazz underpinnings.   "I Am Mine", one of the best power ballads ever.   And "Save You"--  that one rocks so hard that at the Showbox (as seen on the DVD) it drove Mike to slamming his guitar down seemingly virtually as a rapid-fire  impulse. Killer!
