    I don't think anyone is picking and choosing anything (as I already said). No one is trying to avoid the subject. I posted that extensive article so that everyone could read the true part it has in history. It's just that bringing it up here seems completely irrelevant to the conversation, so JAG's motive behind mentioning it the way she did seemed suspect, as though she was trying to defend white slave owners by pointing out that there were some black ones too ("Many" of them, no less).

    I believe it is referred to as "trolling".
    I agree the label generally applies, but I don't think that she posted an opinion or statement that is the opposite of the majority in this case. It was simply pointless to the conversation.
    JAG and people like her make the pointless comments with the express purpose of getting people riled up.

    I'm not so sure of this.

    Maybe I'm naive, but I take everything at face value outside of the comments I know to have different meaning because I know the poster well enough to discern such.

    I know you never stated it, but given so many have... I need to say that the term 'troll' is a demeaning term. The comments some people make might not hold much value, but the people who make them do as far as we know (at least to someone).

    My direct ancestors were not slave owners, but still,.....because I am a white American, I am embarrassed because of slavery.

    I understand on the surface this might not make sense because neither I nor my direct relatives personally had anything to do with it.
    But in the bigger picture of things, as part of a "race", it's just embarrassing to be any part of that.

    EDIT: To answer the question, I think an apology is not 'owed", but I sure as hell would want to give one. I would say "Although the actions were not mine and although this apology is not from my ancestors, I do feel the need to express my sorrow and regret". Not one word would be untrue.

    fair enough, but my question was in direct response to talking about the American slave trade, not global. of course there were white slaves all over history.
