I was born in the UK and raised on my dad's lps (Stones, Beatles, Led Zep, Cream/Clapton, Fleetwood Mac) so my childhood influences are definitely more UK. But becoming a teenager at the end of the 80s meant the U.S. bands of the late 80s/90s have a much longer lasting impact on me personally.
My all-time top 5 would be heavily weighted to the U.S.:
Pearl Jam Neil Young REM Anything and everything Lanegan-related Afghan Whigs (sorry imalive!)
Just to play devil's advocate a little... are we only talking rock music? If you're talking musical influence then Michael Jackson must surely get a mention. I'm not a fan but he influenced generations, and across different genres (Eddie included) so that's a big plus for the US. Patti Smith, Prince, Public Enemy and Sebadoh are a couple of others that I'd definitely add to the list.
I'd definitely count Manic Street Preachers on the UK list but there hasn't been much else coming from the UK since the Britpop era.
I completely skipped a few genres in my "music that changed the world"...
I should add Pete Seger, sugar hill gang, NWA, toots matyl(because Marley can't be mentioned without him first)
Actually I'll ask this:
Pick 1 defining moment in music history in these genres that put the world upside down...
Folk, rock, blues, Motown, rap, R&B, industrial, emo, punk, hardcore, and the bonus Pop.
I left off a few because I think you can cross reference a few artists.
Let's have fun with this. :-)
