Question for you guys, need some advice on my Riot Act LP

Ok, so I posted a month or so ago about some warping on LP #1 of my Riot Act set. I just can't stand not being able to hear Can't Keep on side one and Cropduster on side two. The second LP plays beautifully - I am finishing up listening now, on All or None and it's had zero problems playing.

Should I sell Riot Act for discount and use the cash to get another one, one that isn't warped? How much do I sell it for? Other than Can't Keep and Cropduster, the rest of the album plays great. It's just bugging the shit out of me. I've got the entire PJ catalog on vinyl (all of em') and this is the only one that has an issue and was one my wife bought for me off Amazon Christmas 2002. So, I've had it awhile. It's been played, but very well cared for.

Not going to try flattening it out either. Nice suggestion last month, but no way.

One sold on eb recently for $160. I bet you could find one for around 2 bills if you're patient and wait. I would sell yours (if you can find a buyer- not easy when it's damaged) and use the cash to buy an opened and 100% verified copy that plays flawlessly. It's all about what YOU value things at and what's important to you.

Is there no method you'd try to flatten? I just got a warped one off here too and have been debating trying to flatten it, there seems to be a few ways.

I say that you keep it. I'm in the same boat with the warp. I live in Florida and I am about to put it between two pieces of glass and let it sit up in my hot ass attic for a week.

I have heard the vinyl flat works, but it's expensive and I don't have the balls to put it in the oven.

I'm afriad I'd ruin the first LP completely. I think it has some value in its current state. Plus I don't have spare cash to buy glass that I'd have zero use for afterwards.

Got a couple of posters that need framing?

Also, salvage yards transfer stations/dumps often have glass for free.

Not saying I would do it, but if you prove braver than I, those are a few options for reusing purchased glass or acquiring free glass.

If you have the Ten or Vs/Vitalogy box sets, try slipping the album in one of those for a while. I did that with an original pressing of Ten that had a warp and it helped flatten it a decent amount. Riot Act is a bit thicker packaging than Ten, so you may want to use a spare sleeve & jacket. Try just slipping RA disc 1 in a single jacket with the other vinyl in one of the box sets for a few months.

I have the same problem, but I am in no position to buy a new version, and I also would not feel good about it because I got it as part of my holy grail from Tenclubbers. So putting the LP in a sleep between two pieces of glass in, let's say, a Florida room, would help with the warp?

Too hot and it melts. The whole idea behind that is temperature control & it is too risky. Gonna try the boxsets idea and will report back in a few months! Thanks all!!

  • Flattening works great. You should try it. put the LP between two sheets of glass and leave some heavy books on top near a radiator for a few weeks.

Can someone explain what happens when a lp is warped? I have none that are warped luckily, but just curious- it skips?

Yes, badly. If it's really warped, like a soup bowl, it won't play at all.

No one really has a vinyl that's warped like a soup bowl though, right? You're just saying that.

I guess I'm just curious if your vinyl skips or is "warped." Because I have a few (not PJ luckily) that have skips and now I'm confused if they're just manufacturing issues or wtf

It skips cos' of warping. It is apparently an issue with the pressing as others have told me.

The warp is on the outside of the disc and only in one area where Can't Keep on side one and Cropduster plays on side two. The warp makes the needle hop. Wish I could find a quick way to upload video to show you. As far as the 'soup bowl' reference. YouTube has some examples of records like that that are then put in a flattener.

Right on. Thanks for the explanation, makes sense. Bummer that happened to yours. Mine was ok when I unsealed it luckily I guess, but what pisses me off to no end is when I get a brand new vinyl, open it up and it skips. That's some bullshit right there.

My phish lawn boy skips, and so do about 2 or 3 others that were brand new and sealed when I first played them. Doh!

Funny how the new pressings of old stuff can be like that, but I go to a record shop and find a flawless used Led Zeppelin's In Through The Out Door printed ?? and it doesn't skip.

Dude totally agree. I just went nuts this last few weeks and picked up like every marley OG album from the 70's for cheap and they all play awesomely and sound great. They just don't freaking make em like they used to.

I actually spent some time researching about starting a new vinyl manufacturing plant. Unfortunately the startup costs are so damn high and I'm not a technician/mechanic so I would t know how to fix the presses when they need maintenance :(

That's what I was afraid of happening by 'baking' the album. Going the slow route and hopefully it works.

If anyone has the cash and was considering buying the Vinyl Flat, I say go for it. I've used it several times and has worked every single time, perfectly. And you don't have to use an oven. They offer a pouch too, which you slip the vinyl flat in, seal it, and plug it in the wall. You have to leave it in for a good 3 hours or so, but it is totally worth it!! One time I forgot and left an album in for like 6 hours lol. But it was still fine, and no damage. It does not get hot enough to melt it. As memory serves, I think it was like $200 for the flat and the pouch. Totally worth it and I highly recommend it.
