After spending 3 years with repeated back blowouts, 2 MRI's and a trip to the neurosurgeon, I started going to Pilates. Between classes and lots of core work at home I've seen a dramatic improvement. I never had sciatica but I had a bulging of L4/L5.
The exercises in Pilates aim to restructure the spine back to its normal position and strengthen the core muscles to take pressure off the back. I highly recommend it.

Thanks, I'll give it a look. I never thought of it because I don't know anything about it, really. Thanks very much for the info and advice. Sounds really good.

I have issues with sciatica, but also QL which can leave me in just horrible pain. The slightest movement can set that off without warning. When that is angry, I can bend down, but any even slight "twist" feels like someone is beating me in the back with a chimney sweep brush. I can't stand well, sit well, lay comfortably and I'm basically just a hot mess when it kicks in. Takes about a week for it to pull itself around. Well, that's unless my friend adjusts my back, hip and picks me up and drops me. That seemed to help. It would have been good to know that she was purposely going to drop me to readjust my back though!

Bought my foam roller today. Came with an instructional dvd. $32, lol. Well as long as it helps fix my back it'll be worth it.

So the foam roller the guy in the video is using is longer than the one I've got. He can do more things than I can. I'm following along on the video and I'm like, I can't do that, mine's too short! What the hell. Looks like I have to eventually get another one. What a rip.

Good advice above. My experience is that back pain is rarely about the back. It's the result of weak core (abs, pelvic muscles) tight hamstrings, tight IT band. Too much sitting. Fix those things back pain will dissipate. LOVE my foam roller.

Who knew foam rollers were such a thing? I'd never heard of it until this thread. Thankfully, I don't have to deal with sciatica or any significant back pain, but I have been having more back stiffness since I started riding my bike more. My bike may not be set up in the most ergonomically correct way, so I'll have to look in to that. Also plan to start some sort of formal stretches soon - shetellsherself also tells me that yoga is the way to go.

I pushed it too hard with the PT on Friday. And apparently i am a huge disappointment cuz i do everything wrong.

First exercise was lay flat on your back and but one of those big medicine balls under your feet and till it towards you 30 times.
Next was stretching by pulling your leg up towards you. The point was to stretch your vertebrae or something.

Then last night I did a boatload of laundry and now I can't move. Ouchie.

Keep at it.And remember when "stacking "your spine up and down to slowly let it unfold one vertebrae at a time.

Ha,it's what my Pilates instructor says.So let's say you are laying down on your. Back and you bring your knees into chest, with your arms around your knees. If you kinda roll back your lower spine looses contact with the floor. As you roll back to your starting position, you slowly lower your back 1 vertebrae at a time as you get flat again.Slowly.
If your doing a reverse bridge where your shoulders and feet are the parts of your body making floor contact and and your arching the pelvis toward the ceiling with your butt off the ground. When you return to laying flat you slowly unroll your back with each section of your back making contact with the floor in a slow deliberate manner.
Does that help? You don't want to rush intone out of a stretch or a position. You want to control how your spine rolls in and out of movements.

It definitely explains why I got yelled at for sitting up and putting my feet down.

My first experience with sciatica started when I was pregnant. My massage therapist talked to me about Piriformis syndrome, where sometimes the sciatic nerve runs through the piriformis muscle instead of alongside it. The muscle can pinch on the nerve and cause sciatica. It isn't the cause for everyone but there are stretches that you can try to see if it helps. http://www.spine-health.com/video/sciatica-exercises-piriformis-syndrome-video But honestly, my greatest relief came from acupuncture.
