The Bad Part of Town

do you have one?

what's it called?

in columbus, ohio it was "the east side"

in vegas, it was "the west side"

in salt lake, we have two: west valley city and temple square. WVC is actually not too terrifying but it's where most of the bad shit goes down.
If I had known then what I know now...

Parts of the South and West sides of Chicago. Neighborhoods that I wouldn't even think about driving through. Fucked up part is I'm only 7-8 miles from these areas and there are million dollar houses all over my neighborhood (unfortunately I'm not living in one of said houses)

South LA / Compton / Inglewood / Long Beach.

Many good people live in those areas, but there's also a contingent of assholes who get off on random or misplaced violence - and street-racing (quite a number of fatal wrecks lately).

A matter of opinion but here in Fort Worth probably Stop Six, Como, Poly, and parts of the Northside.

Like hedonist said, there are plenty of good people in those neighborhoods as well as bad guys. They are usually the ones to experience the crime and violence firsthand.

There isn't really much of a bad end of town in Victoria but in Vancouver the Downtown East Side is infamous; in fact, I think it is considered one of the poorest, most desperate neighbourhoods in Canada. Really high drug use, crime, homelessness, mental illness. And yes, those who bear the brunt of the violence are unfortunately the most vulnerable.

  • Phoenix has Phoenix itself and then North Mesa. Everyone else lives out in the burbs. Gilbert was the fastest growing city in the US for many years. Lots of houses built in the last 10 years ranging from 3,000 square feet to 10,000. Beautiful parks and some of the best schools out here.

The saddest thing is the Mormon church has destroyed Old town mesa. Old town Gilbert where I am at has the historical area that goes back to the late 1800's. They kept it as is the best the could, added lots of historical info and kept the cool little stores. They surrounded them with trendy bars/restaurants at both ends of the strip. It is packed down there now every night. Old town Mesa which is older and should be cooler (they have an awesome vinyl store called assylum records )isn't allowed to have alcohol as the Mormon church is close. It is a ghost town.

New business prop: degenerate-a-palooza tour bus gets repurposed to the Bad Ass Part of Town Tour bus and the band plays off the back, enshrined in chicken wire while the guests inside the bus are driven around these bad ass neighborhoods for a tour. Passenger windows are bullet proof lined with mesh so the locals can vent and the guests don't get hurt. The band plays whatever genre might be most pissing off-ish to keep it interesting. Stops at local eateries, liquor stores and illicit markets for an extra fee. Anyone?

In Dublin there'd be particular areas where you mightn't want to be wandering round after dark, pretty much the places where you'd find the drug dealers and would get the occasional shooting of such people e.g. Coolock, Darndale, Cherry Orchard, Walkinstown, Cabra

Us Southsiders (South of the River Liffey) tend to speak of the Northside (or the darkside as it is sometimes known!) as a dodgy place but to be honest the iffy areas are equally shared between both sides....

In my specific area, just a few miles south in a community called 'White Center', which is fairly diverse in population. Then go south to Tukwila, Burien, Renton, Auburn, Federal Way and Tacoma. Most of those areas are very 'affordable'. Sure some nice parts, but generally, you don't want to hang out after dark much. Oh, and in downtown, 2nd & Pike-specifically that corner.

Funny, my realtor is from Chicago and he says 'you guys don't know what a *bad area* really is'. Which may be true, we don't have a lot of gun fights or murders, but they are pretty bad, compared to other cities/towns in the area.

  • When I lived in HEMET, ( if you have been to, or Google Hemet, you'll understand why this is so unique), of all places.. There was a street, actually four, that was so bad, that Paramedics could not respond to calls from this one block radius, without police escort. They had to wear full
Flack gear, and riot helmets! So not kidding! I remember one time, there was a structure fire there, and once the police found out it was a trap, them and the firefighters just sat outside the perimeters. They made sure it didn't spread.... But they wouldn't attend the fire. That was the day the residents of Timothy Lane Park moved out. When the good people left, all the kingpins, drug lords, and hot houses moved in.. Now, it's like this piece of Ganegreen right on the border edge of Hemet and San Jacinto... According to my brother, who sells these people pot by the pounds... They have nearly migrated down to the edge of the Scientology headquarters, Golden Era. Imagine how THAT one is going to go down..

The lady whose house burned to the ground because firefighters and police would NOT risk the lives of their staffs respectively, sued the city of Hemet, and then the county of Riverside, and eventually the state of Cslifornia. All three pleas were denied because honestly, you can't tell someone who is qualified, they can't buy property because they are not PC, or safe seeming. That poor lady watched her house and all her things burn to the ground, cause druggies wanted to snipe off some cops. As for the house they burned??? Total random house.., no treason, sh'd not done anything to piss them off.. They just wanted to pick off cops as they attended the fire with rescue personnel.

The crooks here have taken to robbing kids, yes kids (middle and high school age) of their phones and sometimes backpacks because the cops basically don't care. The police force says it's because they don't have enough officers, but really the cops just don't care.

I now live in a small city in Mid-MI - in one direction we have Saginaw (Sag-a-nasty) which are parts of Saginaw near Covenant Hospital and south of East Holland - basically the east side.

In the other direction we have Flint. Again areas of Flint - I believe Flint is now more dangerous than Detroit - but if you find yourself on Chambers St or Stonegate Dr .... ugh you get the point. East of Dort Highway, Lippincott Boulevard, Atherton Rd.

Lastly a couple hours away is Detroit. Steer clear of Wyoming St, Orangelawn St, Gratiot Ave, Rosemary Ave, Mack Ave, Helen St, MOST dangerous W Chicago and Livernois Ave. Again areas of the city. Driving into downtown Detroit there isn't much to look at mostly looks vacant and homeless.

Again there's more areas in MI where you just don't travel alone and just stay aware of your surroundings, those listed above are the most dangerous.
Oh please let it rain today.

Having read other posts I'm not sure there are actually any areas of Ireland, let alone Dublin, that could be described as 'bad areas' :) There's nowhere really that I wouldn't feel safe and most of the areas I describe as dodgy are only dangerous for criminals who could fall victim to other criminals

Oh yeah, Vancouver's downtown Eastside is absolutely awful. Probably the worst that any North American has seen. The upside is that it is in a very condensed area. So super awful but relatively small. However, it's also literally right next to the downtown core. Tourists just wander right into it - one block it's a beautiful tourist area, the very next block it's skid row, and they're dodging tweakers on the sidewalk and among the most desperate, poor, addicted, untreated mentally ill people in Canada who are all in one place. It must come as quite a shock. Driving through is a challenge - you have to keep a constant eye out for people staggering out into the street in front of your car. And it's a main artery into the city, so everyone drives through regularly. Passing through those few blocks is bound to be the most depressing part of your day, hands down. So much human misery and poverty right out there in your face at any time of the day. The police don't do shit. They just want to keep it from spreading out. Although now some are trying to creep INto it - gentrification. There are actually protests about it, because where the fuck are these people supposed to go if they are pushed out by gentrification of the neighborhood??

BC is horrible when comes to taking care of the mentally ill, and this is a place where the drug addicted homeless or nearly homeless mentally ill people tend to congregate and live, as well as all the non-metally ill severe addicts and poor petty criminals, etc. And the most disenfranchised. Very sad (but not to forget thst there is actually a really community happening in this area... a fucked up one, but a community nonetheless).

However, while there is a lot of homelessness, drugs, crime, and mentally ill people in this area, I would say that it is not anywhere near as dangerous as a lot of other places, because there is no gang activity or anything like that in the area. It's too poor for that shit. The crime is more drunken fights, domestic problems, and a lot of theft to fuel drug habits. Surrey, a city just outside of Vancouver, has all the shootings. Nearly 30 in the past month or so I think? There is a gang turf war going on right now there.

I wandered I to the bad area in Vancouver...just like PJ_soul says, wandering the shops in a nice area, and then BAM, tweakers everywhere. That was the longest block ever.

We ended up in the wrong area in Baltimore. There was a bus driver who motioned to me to follow him. (Obviously, we didn't fit in.) Up the street a bit, his arm came out of the window pointing me the direction I needed to go to exit the hood. I was incredibly thankful.
