Rockhounding

Anybody rockhound or have a metal detector?

Hi My name is RKCNDY, I'm a nerd and I rockhound.

After the Missoula PJ show, I went to Phillipsburg to go look for sapphires-Montana is *the* place in the US you can find sapphires (a few have been found in North Carolina, but it's not as common). Anywho, I went to one storefront, they get gravel from a mine and have a sluice box on-site for you to sift through the gravel. I found a few worth cutting, and ended up with:

http://www.opalmtngems.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=38&zenid=rr792iol2iat9ov53770r7o1f1
mine is the Bezel set triple sapphire ring.

I was hooked, I bought another bag of gravel from a different store...all the stores get gravel from different mines and the sapphires will vary in size and quality. Went home and sifted through them all, I found a large sapphire and held onto it to take back to have them grade it and to see if it was worth cutting. Last July, I sifted through another bucket of gravel, didn't find much (just smaller sapphires, not really worth cutting) but asked them about the larger one I found.

Turns out it was a 6 carat flawless. So I left it for them to heat treat and cut. They called me yesterday and it's ready, so I paid off the balance for the cutting and treatment, and should get it by 'next Tuesday'.

I will post a pic of the rough stone when I get home from work later today.

The ring you made is cool and I guess rock hounding is kind of like fishing except instead of water, you have dirt or rocks and rather than getting your hands slimed by hooking worms, you still get 'em dirty. Good luck and I hope you find the Rosetta Stone or Hope Diamond of sapphires!

no, my birthstone is the ugly celery green peridot. I happen to love sapphires, especially pink ones. Sapphires are a 9 on the mohs scale (hardness scale, so talc is a 1), just under diamonds-no other gems are that high on the mohs scale.

woo! I didn't fuck up the quotes!

here is a pic of the rough sapphire I turned in:

    image

it came out to be 2.35 carats finished, I just have to find a jeweler to make a setting for me. I was going to set it in sterling-I have an allergy to gold-but the stone's worth is fairly high, so I'm thinking about getting it set in platinum or titanium. I'm really giddy about seeing it. Now I know why those guys on the Prospectors show get all "woo-hoo"!

I watched this show on BBC called Detectorists. Dont know if I could get down with a metal detector though. I just like looking for pebbles and shit near the water.

pebbles and shit from near the water:

these are agates from the Oregon coast-the little green bit and the stuff around it is beach glass.
That's one haul from about 5 hours of hunting.

Currently, my favorite stones are Botswana agates. They are formed by super fine layers of quartz/silica from lava flows. There is an embargo on rough unfinished agates, Africa only allows the agates to be sold after they are finished within the country. You can still find some rough stones to finish yourself, but they can be costly.

I found some Botswana rough and spent the last 10 weeks tumbling and polishing these along with a few other stones.

they remind me of biting into jawbreakers

I may toss a few back in the tumbler to get a better shine.

really? go to some smaller beaches at low tide, walk around to the lesser traveled areas, and keep your eyes open, keep looking at the ground, don't trip ;) .
I went for a walk on a private beach, and found tons of it. I'll toss up a pic tomorrow.

Unfortunately I don't get to too many beaches around here. (I don't drive) these are from my Australia/NZ/Hawaii trip last year. Except the giant white shell, my friend brought that from Honduras for me. The older ones i have are on a shelf I can't reach so I don't have any more to share tonight.image

awesome! make sure to do a search for 'rockhounding in {name of city)" and it will tell you what you can find in certain areas.

This is the beach glass I found in an hour of walking on a beach in West Seattle :
