Since when is getting 20 inches of snow historic? I can remember getting a couple feet over night and going to school the next morning. It happens in new york, and the world comes to an end. Sissies.

we've had more than that before. It's not just NY though.

So places like boston, new york, and Philly aren't used to a foot of snow?

NYC, no not really....and where I am, no, not really. Boston of course. But 2 or 3 feet is a big deal. If we get it...so there is that.

Recently no because the weather has been warmer. But it used to snow a lot before.

On the old Sony BBS, the location of my now-husband was BFE. Can't believe how clear that moment was, when he told me what it meant. How does this random shit stick with us?

Also, the news just referred to the hoopla out east as "the storm of 2015". We're not even a month into the year! And the weather-chick looks like she's having a seizure while pointing at the map.

At any rate - keep safe, folks. Keep your eyes open for idiots and assholes.

You know I might be a bit peeved and taking it out on this thread, but I don't see what the problem is.I've seen a lot of posts on social media by people essentially complaining that the storm isn't severe enough. That the city is over reacting. That it was worse last year.
Is there something wrong with trying to be prepared and keeping the people safe? there's 80 apartments in my building. No, we don't all have generators. The city is pretty densely packed, I think the estimates were 10 million in the five boros in 2012. They shut down the roads and the train for safety, since a couple years ago when we got buried and caught unprepared there were buses and ems vehicles stranded in the streets, to say nothing of the cars. Ppl were suck in their cars in the highway and the ems couldn't get to them. People were killed walking through the park when the weight of the snow knocked the branches off trees. If something happens like a real medical emergency you want the ems to be able to get to your building, not blocked by stranded cars and debris.
If the storms path changed or if they just predicted it wrong and we only get 10" And 30mph winds instead of 65mph I'll be happy. I don't wanna be buried under two feet of snow.I don't want the streets closed and the subway shut down tomorrow I've got shit to do. 5 or 6 hours ago when I was out I had no trouble getting around and the weather wasn't terrible or treacherous, just unpleasant. I hope it stays that way, but I can already see outside that it's not going to.
Idon't know exactly where buffalo is but I think it's closer to Canada than to the city. I have it in my head that it's like an hour or hour and a half flight from JFK. They get hit with a lot of snow but it's different, not as densely populated. The wind outside my window sounds like an air raid siren. Or a plane taking off. That shit is strong enough to down branches and toss trash cans around. I was in a cab a few years ago in a crazy wind storm and it ripped the paneling off the outside enclosure thing from a bodega or chinito corner store, you know the thing for the flowers - and it hit the cab right at my door. It was fucking scary, thankfully no one was hurt. Gusts of wind like that are not something to takelikely around here.

Anyway I get that the blizzard may not be impressive enough for some people, and everyone is entitled to their opinions on the weather. But what the fuck is the point of shitting on people for preparedness?

The storm was so bad here that we got barely 1/4 of an inch of snow (rolls eyes). I think the folks in the media need to take Valium and relax. I'm all for being prepared, but not for whipping people into a frenzy.

We ended up with about 10 inches plus blowing winds. Not too bad. If we did get "the big one" I would have been ready. yea, the media loves this stuff. but so do I :-) We had a slow day at work today anyway and my boss won't be too happy paying us to stay home but I can get a lot of personal stuff done including hitting the gym later after they finally plow my parking lot.

    I hear ya, ident!

The stupid thing is....if CNN (or whoever) has it in their minds that snowmageddon is going to hit NYC, they cover it like it did....even when it did not.

Last night, some dude was reporting from their "blizzard mobile" ......as people rode past on their bicycles!

Be prepared. That's fine. We go through it almost every year during hurricane season. My problem is with the media and how a couple feet of snow is all of a sudden going to be the end of the world. Even during actual emergencies, they are trying to get ratings. Media driven panics are most of the time worse than the actual event.

I was very happy to see that the snowfall was less than projected. I was woken up by screeching children playing in the 11" we got, happy to see no more was falling. It's gonna be 30°F and sunny tomorrow so yay! Laundry weather!

And if I'm honest "yay! I can order delivery again!"

This is interesting, cuz the national weather service was saying 24-36" but the NY1 meteorologist was saying 12-18" the whole time. I read today that the NWS was using the European system because it's usually more accurate instead of the GPS system they usually use.
