Just couldn't get myself to try to go to CHICAGO for this and now realize its one of my biggest mistakes not to have attended this , saw my 1st Dead show in 1977

Would have loved to see you there Jose. Not going to be a "next time". At least not as The Greatful Dead. Although without Jerry it really wasn't a GD show. Trey did hold is own I must say. Didn't try to be Jerry, just did what he does well, rip on guitar.
Should be in NY in September & early October. Hope to see you at the PJ pre-party then. Enjoy your summer my friend.
So, What you Giving ?........ (Thanks Speedy, Alesek, & Arq+friends)
    What You Giving

I suggest you step out on your Porch.
Run away my son. See it all. Oh, See the World!

I'll be honest... Fare Thee Well may have been a more emotional scene, but I'd take John Mayer's soulful playing over Trey's any day. I may not do NYC, but I hope they add a Toronto date!

except phil isn't on this tour...right? the music didn't die on july 5th 2015. it will carry on as it always has.

as far as who is the better guitar player is, i've seen mayer and trey many times and both are on a level that not many other players ever get to. trey did an incredible job in chicago but yeah mayer has got some chops!

i've said it before but thank god for cover bands like DSO because it gives people many opportunities to be with all those twirling hippies and hear/see/feel that wonderful music go down. it's really all about the songs at the end of the day. don't matter who plays them(imo)
any-ways here's the mayer quote from rolling stone

"I've been listening to the Grateful Dead non-stop. Mark my words: the Grateful Dead are gonna make a comeback, because of how that music cleanses your palate," Mayer said at the time.

Indeed, Mayer had been jamming with select band members since March, learning the late Jerry Garcia’s guitar parts by ear and immersing himself in the repertoire in hopes of possibly hitting the road. At the same time, he decided to bench an album he had started working on so he could devote all of his time to the Dead.
A relatively recent discoverer of the band, the Grammy-winning singer and songwriter says his curiosity was piqued when he heard the Dead’s 1980 classic "Althea" on a Pandora station back in 2011. "I just loved that riff," Mayer explains. "There's always that moment when you hear something that grabs you and you have a point a reference -- that was mine. Now four years later, it's what I call shaking the big Polaroid: really taking in and learning all that music."

Adds Weir: "It's gratifying to see somebody discover our work and it's also fun to have someone who's cranked up about it -- a new initiate into our way of doing things."

It’s a sentiment Kreutzmann shares, noting that Mayer also brings with him a feel for the blues that was crucial to the band’s early material. "When we first started playing years ago, it was with Pig Pen, and he was nothing but a blues guy. We took that and made it into the Grateful Dead and we're doing that with John. And John gets to open up to many styles and doesn't have to be locked into any one genre. And I think that's why John is excited to play with us because we offer up a whole new cookie. He's told me that he’s been at home working on our material like crazy. He'll be one of us."
Mayer is respectfully careful to note that the final decision on whether to move forward with Dead & Co. was not made until after Fare Thee Well. "It was all on hold until those guys could honor those shows and also see if they liked them," says Mayer, who was in attendance for the entire run -- two shows in Santa Clara, Calif. and three in Chicago over July 4th weekend. It was shortly into the first set on night one, however, when he set his sights on that very stage. "I went, ‘Oh, this has to happen,’" he recalls. "They're too good still, they're too great to roll this back in the shop and call it a day."

Mayer take on Anastasio’s performance? "So brilliant," he says. "Trey was such a tasteful player. He did something incredible to the legacy -- and didn't leave it any easier for me to pick up the baton."

I stupidly let a pair go 16th row just a little bit behind the stage. Hoping for a Toronto show addition, and hoping it isn't around NYE!

There is a few week gap in the dates. Hoping either Midwest dates there or next year if this thing is going to continue.
  • my guess is more nights will be added to the tour. there's lots of time
i think they are releasing and selling the dates in small bunches and based on popularity of what is already on sale vs sold will determine where and if more shows will be added. if that makes sense.

I just found out my friend Chelsea did the ticket/envelope design for one of the Solider Field dates. She did the one with the skulls.

Yes, they have been, almost right on. I haven't gone but know people that were at both in NYC this past weekend and sounded great.

Albany ticket was 7. They were in at 7:17. Mayer sounds good and looks like he's having a blast. A few rough parts in a couple songs though
  • i'm super impressed with the 2 shows i've seen so far. all players on their A game
loved mayer before this and love him more now. always knew he would work out fine for this.
oteil and jeff also a+ players. otiel having the greatest time(nyc) along with mayer. everyone's smiling. very happy about this tour. it's nice to be surrounded by that many people who get it.

Did you find tickets? I don't think it's sold out, so the box office may be an option or even Stub Hub had some cheap uppers last I looked (a week or two ago)

Well, found a ticket!!! I have zero idea what I'm getting myself into but I am very excited. First time at any Dead-related event. Intrigued when I heard John Mayer + Dead + free tickets. Glad I was able to score one. Should be a fun night!

Should be a good show. It'll probably be slower than you expect, but that typically the way Bobby plays the songs nowadays

I had a great time last night. I am unfamiliar with anything Dead, other than the stuff that everyone knows (Truckin, Friend of the Devil, Box of Rain, Casey Jones, etc). But as a music lover in general, and a big Mayer fan, I had to find a way in to that free show. Luckily was able to find a last minute ticket! I really enjoyed the first set especially--upbeat, more interesting jams. 2nd set was a lot slower for me, especially in the beginning, but still cool. Let me tell you--holy crap that crowd/atmosphere. I don't think I've even seen a PJ crowd react quite like that (though night 2 in that same building I'd say was probably pretty comparable). It felt like a family in there. I can see why people have such strong connections to the band and music. Overall, I had a great night. Cool to experience something completely foreign to me.
