this time was a 9 month old infant

who is next??

A 5-year-old Missouri boy found a handgun and accidentally shot and killed his infant brother.

The boys’ mother initially told Nodaway County sheriff’s deputies the older boy had shot his 9-month-old brother in the head with a paintball gun, reported WDAF-TV.

But deputies determined the boy had found a loaded .22-caliber Magnum revolver on a shelf built into the headboard of the master bed.

The infant was in a playpen in the same room when he was shot, reported KCTV-TV.

The gun belonged to another family member and not the mother, authorities said.

A neighbor said the mother was at the family’s rural Elmo home at the time with her four sons, including a 3-year-old and 1-year-old.

The county prosecutor will assemble a child fatality review board made up of law enforcement, social workers, and medical providers to determine whether charges will be filed against the boys’ parents.

This debate has been over for a long time. It's been a landslide victory for common sense- gun legislation is necessary and needed.

Unfortunately, despite this fact, no gun reform is on the horizon. The gun industry has influential people in their corner and gun 'enthusiasts' will not compromise their hobbies. They cannot anticipate the inherent dangers of owning a gun touching their lives. Do you think these people would have had a gun in their house knowing their child would be killed with it?

Yeah, sadly, Thirty Bills, gun reform is repeatedly shut down in this country.

The child had access to the gun, the gun was loaded, the brother was killed. Thus the other question that comes to mind: "Do these people think?"

There are responsible gun owners out there. Even I, one of "our anti-gun" guys here, know and respect some of them, but obvious to me is that there are far too many gun owners in general and far, far too many irresponsible, unthinking gun owners. Gun ownership needs to be made much more difficult. There are just too many loose canons out there.

I wonder how the mom thought she'd be able to explain away a gunshot by claiming it was a paint ball??

I can't fathom being a parent and thinking it's ok to have a loaded gun in the house. it doesn't matter where. ANYWHERE is somewhere a child can get to it.

  • My neighbor's 3 year old told her grandmother (another neighbor) that the gun is kept on the top closet shelf. Now why would a 3 year old need to know this??? (and I don't know if it's loaded)

after reading this a little closer, we have a mother at whatever age with 4 kids in that house at 5 yrs and younger. Think she was a little overwhelmed? The article says that it belongd to another family member, not specifically stating the father. I agree another senseless tragedy but frankly I want to know more details before I pass judgement as to irresponsibility on moms part at a minimum.

Gun not secured in locker separate from ammunition (it was freaking loaded) tells me quite a bit.

Where is unsung when you need him. These gun threads have no legs without a champion for "gun rights".

I do champion gun rights. But not for everyone. I seriously am sickened by the fascination with this weapon. I really wish they'd make it harder for people to obtain them. It's way too easy as it is now. My guns are all locked in a safe, separate from the ammunition, except the .38 I carry. That one stays loaded. But if my young nieces or nephews are around, it gets locked in the safe with the other weapons. No exceptions.. It's called being smart and using your brain.. If you can't think responsibly.. You shouldn't be allowed to own a gun.. Period.

I have kids and I have guns. I don't understand how people don't lock up their guns. Every single one of my rifles has a trigger lock on it or the bolt is locked away in a safe making the gun inoperable. Ammunition is locked up. The sole handgun I have is again locked up in a safe and the key is very much hidden. I would never ever leave a handgun or rifle loaded. I just don't get it.

This post details responsible gun ownership.

You'll never be able to get it. The average IQ leaves a lot of room for stupidity. Half the population rests below the average IQ quotient. Think of that.

I hear ya thirty bills unpaid. Lots of dumb ass people out there.
I do feel that gun laws some how have to change in this country. I think that before owning a gun you have to go through some basic training (I took a hunter safety course at ten years old, my dad and grandfathers taught me how to shoot responsibly, etc) Here in new jersey in order to buy a gun you need two letters of reference, a back ground check, a mental health background check and they actually contact your employer to make sure you are fit to own a gun. I have no problem with any of that since I have nothing to hide. These crazy gun nuts think all of this will result in confiscation, etc etc. You know the routine.

If we're not going to implement stricter gun laws... then I feel we need tougher penalties for 9 month olds and three year olds. I mean... we gotta try something!
