Favorite Albums from 2014

I searched and couldn't find a thread. So what are your favorite albums released in 2014? Let's try and name a minimum of 5, but list as many as you'd like. Some of my favorites are:
1. Strand of Oaks - Heal
2. Shovels & Rope - Swimmin' Time
3. Ryan Adams - Ryan Adams
4. Temples - Sun Structures
5. Jack White - Lazeretto
6. Hiss Golden Messenger - Lateness of Dancers
7. The Felice Brothers - Favorite Waitress

Granted, there are still a bunch of albums that I still need to listen to; i.e. Pixies, Band of Skulls, Ray LaMontagne, Spoon, Foxygen, Cold War Kids, etc.

Granted, there are still a bunch of albums that I still need to listen to; i.e. Pixies, Band of Skulls, Ray LaMontagne, Spoon, Foxygen, Cold War Kids, etc.

Spoon and Band of Skulls are the best of that bunch in my opinion.
I was pretty disappointed with Ray LaMontagne, he really changed direction and went
in a more mainstream sound and away from the desolate folk style he had.
Dan Auerbach produced the record and I really hope that doesn't continue.
Curious on your thoughts on it when you get to it.

Thanks for the tip! I really need to get Spoon. Just listened to Transference yesterday and forgot how much I love them.

Agreed 100% on Ray being a disappointment. Was just expecting more from that album. I was excited upon hearing Auerbach was producing, but it just didn't deliver. Spoon was a good listen, but for some reason the 2nd half of that album is way stronger than the first to me!

Ray Lamontagnes new album was the biggest letdown of my life. How does he go from God Willin and the Creek Dont Rise to Supernova shit?????
  • Overall, I think it was one of the worst years in new music. The only standout album is Jack White's Lazaretto. Glad to see Black Keys aren't getting a lot of love, that new album was poop.

^ not a a great year depth wise, but some of these newer bands are going to break through soon enough. I'm really digging this Delta Spirit I got turned onto. But did you really think Lazaretto was the best album of the year? I'm a gigantic JW fan and I can name about 10 albums that were way better this year.

And go see Strand of Oaks.... Great live show and I expect them to only get better.

    things i enjoyed this year

black keys - turn blue. still pretty much burned out on the black keys, but this is probably my favorite record of theirs since thickfreakness.
    leonard cohen - popular problems.
first aid kit - stay gold.
sonny knight & the lakers - i'm still here.
daniel lanois - flesh and machine.
les big byrd - they worshipped cats.
theophilus london - vibes. still digesting this one, but shit is good, yo.

    leisure birds - tetrahedron.
    lowest pair - 36¢.
    mike mictlan - HELLA FRREAL.
    tom petty - hypnotic eye.
pink floyd - the endless river. a pleasant surprise and i couldn't be happier about that.

    My Top 10, in order:

    1. Afghan Whigs - Do To The Beast. Outstanding record, well worth the wait
    2. Neil Young - Storytone. The orchestral disc is really good, the solo disc is beautiful
    3. Mark Lanegan - Phantom Radio. Seriously, ML can pretty much do no wrong
    4. Joseph Arthur - Lou. A really touching tribute to Lou Reed
    5. Ryan Adams - Ryan Adams. A fun record
    6. Foo Fighters - Sonic Highways. Solid album, although the 2nd half isn't as strong as the 1st
    7. Afghan Whigs - Gentlemen at 21. I know it's a reissue... but it's a fckn good one!
    8. Black Keys - Turn Blue. I really enjoyed this one
    9. Death From Above 1979 - The Physical World. A great comeback
    10. Cracker - Berkeley To Bakersfield. An unexpected treat towards the end of the year

Honourable mention goes to Beck's Morning Phase (only just missed out because of Cracker). I haven't got Elbow, The Vines or TV on the Radio yet.

Biggest disappointment of the year would have to be the completely bloody awful Lazaretto.
