Why the Lightning Bolt tour 13'-14' was one of the all time best

Part comedy routine - the intimacy of the EV solo shows, hearing him relaxed, loose and really funny bringing that in-between song banter to a whole new level.
Part epic song list - with their catalog, every night was a GREAT fucking night no matter how many shows you saw and what you thought was the 'best' night. every fucking show was the best and its hard to argue it any other way IMO.
Part family vibe - People travelling with each other for 20 + years, fucking infants with noise cancelling earmuffs in the crowd (I don't approve by the way), feeling like the band brought you into something more personal than a 1 hour rock show.

The Tulsa 14' show is pretty fucking funny - what a darkhorse show on the tour.

    Totally agree !!!

I couldn't see the guys this year but i've tried to follow the tour as much as possible (Thanks you Dimi !!!)...and it's clear they bring their shows to a very high level of intimacy with us, with the audience ! Incredible, amazing, either in the States or anywhere else in the world (Europe, Australia) ...we all know here they are the f**** best band in the world BUT the crowds were huge too...and it wouldn't be possible if people didn't answer...(not sure of my english spoken...sorry if it's wrong).
When i listen to a show, i think : OMG ! if there's someone who doesn't know very well PJ, I'm sure he's lost here...lol...Just Imagine : you go to a rock show...and they sing Fernando from Abba ! or Let Stone sing, or Frozen....so weird from an outside eye....
Their setlist is absolutely awesome, each show has a different atmosphere and when song titles appeared in the forum in live, i regretted not to be there...
And now i'm so pleased to see Ed's self confidence, his happiness when they play...his behaviour is so different from the 10 first years...And it's better for everyone !!!!

So one thing to say : THANK YOU EVERYBODY

    Agree with all of it.

I don't really know how to put it in to words but they just really brought it on this go 'round. Not to say the haven't always given their all, but this time man, they were out there like their lives depended on it. You could feel THEIR emotion through the music.

Its on another level. Which is why we need a BR/DVD of the tour.

Agree. I like the you tube full shows but they don't come close to being as satisfying as a pro shot video.

All very nice, except the family vibe. I'm not into that. I like for a rock concert to be grown-up time - teens and older. Little kids at a rock concert just doesn't sit well with me (not that I'm not gracious when it happens.... but inside I'm annoyed).

The fact that there was so little hype around a show like Denver shows how amazing the past two years has been!

I love Ed's banter, I love the way he shares so many personal details with us. I think he loves us as much as we love him. What an evolution from the shy person who would barely look up at the audience. I'm amazed when people complain that he talks too much between songs.

I thought it was a pretty good tour... the 3 hour setlists were amazing and a really awesome direction to move the live shows too.

I still don't think it's the best tour they've ever done though. I agree with a previous poster that the '98 was the best (or to be fair it's all matter of opinion, so I'll say it was my favourite tour). The Yield Tour was the pinnacle of their first 5 extreme solid albums. They had fine tuned their live performance but were still fairly young. It was like sports players in their late 20's. They've got enough experience that they're proficient at the sport, but they've still got the piss and vinegar in them that make them electric. The '98 tour PJ seemed to balance out the experience and their youth.... those were powerful shows... not as long, but fucking electric :)

The Lightning Bolt tour was epic.... but the Yield tour is still my favourite (with maybe the '05 Gorge/Canadian tour as my 2nd).
  • We got Wrigley, 3 hour shows, some rarely played tunes (think Let me Sleep), Yield and No Code played in it's entirety, Euro tours, sticker wars. Man it's been a fun two years!

Family atmosphere referring mostly to the legions of fans following the band. My comment on babies was meant to be more snarky than it came across! I have a 18 month old daughter. Obv a rock show is the last place I'd take her.

  • 2003 was my personal favorite tour but every single one is pretty awesome. I say one thing about this Lightning Bolt tour, these guys still fucking rock. They're as energetic onstage as ever.
