A little off the beaten path...

DinosaurJr, 2009, Marquee Theatre, Tempe, AZ

I can semi-proudly say J Mascis gave me a case of tinnitus

Major hearing damage at that show... Deeply regret not bringing earplugs...

Right ear has not stopped ringing since.

Not off the beaten path at all - if you read through these comments, Dinosaur Jr is just passing Soundgarden as the most commonly mentioned "Band that caused me tinnitus" ;)

    * I thought the 'Loudest Crowd Moment' thread on the Porch was this thread title. I'm curious to know what people think the loudest shows are.

I was at Iron Maiden at the PNE in Vancouver. I am certainly not a wuss (I have mild tinnitus from listening to music too loud), but at one point of the show, I thought blood was running out of my ears (no kidding!).

    Freaking loud.

Wolfmother at the Queen Elizabeth blasted my face off too.

I've heard Maiden is really loud!

I went to ACDC during the Razors Edge tour at MSG, 91 I think? The drummer is working the snare, movie theater style lights come on, guitar barely starts Thunderstruck and crowd goes bat shit crazy! I couldn't make out the song until it was halfway through. The crowd was that loud! So loud that it went silent. Eerie felling.

Same show, Hells Bells. Big huge bell comes down and Brian Johnson hits it with a sledge hammer… multiple times…

…Still the same show… For those about to rock and that cannon… Dear lord that was loud. I actually covered my ears.

My ears rang for 3 days after this…

2nd place goes to Metallica later that year at Nassau Coliseum. I brought ear plugs, decided not to use them, I was 14, what the hell did I know. Ears rang for a few days after that show too. One intro with the gunfire and pyro technics was loud.
    tempo n groove,

same ac/dc tour but in cedar rapids, iowa @ the five seasons center. i was sure they cracked the foundation of that venue. that was insane loud & it was crystal clear. son of a!!!! seriously, cracking reinforced concrete in all directions & many, many feet thick. i figured, "ok this place is gonna collapse"
Thank you! I am surprised more people haven't been to an AC/DC show and to tell us how loud it was!
I've seen AC/DC twice, I just don't remember them at all as standing out as particularly loud. It was loud, but not "notably so".
Was it the razors edge tour? They may have toned it down since then?

What year was Razor's Edge tour? That would help me ballpark the years of my AC/DC shows...

  • I saw ACDC on that tour (Vancouver)!

Loved that show. From what I can recall: Angus disappeared while playing and, never missing a note, reappeared in the stands facing the stage.

I also recall- just to my right- Hells Angels beating the snot out of some guy who was standing with his shirt off in front of them when they were trying to sit down.

Saw that tour in Portland Maine and in MD the Capital Centre. Angus came out on a small stage right in front of me.....I think that was the tour they had these AcDc bills fall from the ceiling, I grabbed a few. It was cool seeing them again when 5 years earlier I waited on the band and road crew at Denny's in VA that was the Fly On The Wall tour.

STILL no way as loud as The Black Ice tour and I had ear plugs for the first time at any show and my ears still hurt with buzz/ringing. I kept wondering how do these guys do this night after night and still have any hearing left....how!

Hard to say... I've been to so many loud shows in my life that it's expected. The first three shows I ever attended were Van Halen, Iron Maiden (March and December of 1984, respectively) and then Maiden again the following June. Before that VH show, I had no idea what I was in for and didn't realize that music could be THAT loud. And then the Maiden shows were even louder. Ever since then, nothing really stands out as particularly loud.

On the other side of the coin, I've been to some shows that were annoyingly quiet. The Jayhawks come to mind as probably the worst example of this.

Jesus & Mary Chain at The Ritz in NYC for the Automatic tour was loud.
Boredoms at CBGB on the Pop Tatari tour
In 2010 I saw shows on consecutive nights at Masonic Hall in Brooklyn. The first night was Boris and SunnO))) doing their album Altar in its entirety. It was so loud that I sat in the balcony the next night for Sleep. They weren't too loud but opener A Storm Of Light was absolutely too loud…ouch.
I agree with the mentions of Dinosaur Jr. They are always loud.

Nine Inch Nails, With Teeth tour. Loudest, but also the best concert I've ever been to.

Halestorm at Revelution in Ft.Lauderdale was the loudest by far with Foo Fighters in Richmond being second and Sabbath on Mob Rules tour tied with Iron Maiden on Number of the Beast tour for third.

Out of the hundreds of shows Ive seen the only band that has hurt my ears to the point of them ringing is Big Sugar. Rattle your earwax! lol
Most bands are loud but it sounds good.Bass that rattles your skin but is clear as day.
I love Soundgarden seen them 3 times but the show at the QE in Vancouver was the worst sounding concert I have ever been to the next night I saw Manson there and it sounded amazing!
Some sound techs are certainly better than others.

This has been brought up before- the brutal Soundgarden show at the QE.

I hated that show. It had the potential to be wicked, but it was failure... big time.

To fail at achieving good sound at that venue means you have special aptitude for being useless.
