Soundgarden in Prudential Center, Newark, NJ. They walked off stage for the encore letting their guitars reverb against their amps...and din't turn them off for like 10 minutes... My ears rang for several days after and really woke me up to the dangers.
YES. This was pre-earplug days for me and oh boy, I was dying the next day.
Also, Mike Watt & Friends at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC. This was the show that made me get earplugs. I think my ears were ringing for a few days, and that was not fun. Show was great though

When I saw this title the first band I thought of was absolutely Dinosaur Jr! Coolest thing though was, I think this was '92ish?, but they sold the first ear plug travel containers I'd ever seen. Little bright green with Dinosaur Jr written in purple. That was the beginning of me always always having ear plugs with me.
Fast forward a zillion years, and post-having kids, and my husband and I went to see Bad Brains (his favorite band ever). Don't know what I was thinking but thought I didn't need earplugs. Holy crap was that show LOUD! I definitely, for the first time ever had ringing ears for a couple of days. Which is a feat, because I've been to an outrageous number of shows. But Dinosaur Jr taught me to always have earplugs!
There have been other crazy loud shows, where your internal organs feel like they're going to vibrate and then spontaneously combust... but I can't think of any of those bands right now.

AC/DC in 1978 on their powerage tour. I had front row and my ears rung for week. Ted Nugent in 1977 (might have been louder than AC/DC) Black Sabbath/Van Halen 1978 MSG Ramones 1981 NYC Black Sabbath 1980 Heaven and Hell Tour The Who - 1982 Pontiac Silverdome
So far it looks like Dinosaur Jr gets the trophy for "Most Hearing Ruined"
yeah. luckily I went to the show with someone who had seen them before and came prepared for the both of us. It is really the high frequencies that mess you up.

Soundgarden in 2011 in Kansas City we were about 10 rows from the stage and I thought my ears were bleeding at one point! I've never worn ear plugs at a concert but if I see Soundgarden again, I might have to start! )
Sometimes you find yourself Having to put all your faith In no faith
I remembered the other day the fact that I had to leave the Wolfmother concert in a smaller venue (the Queen Elizabeth Theater in Vancouver) because the show was so loud.
I would have stuck it out, but I had my 12 year old son with me (we were trying to get a tambourine ) ). We both had ear plugs, but at a point in the show, I thought to myself, "Geezuz, I think my son's ears are being damaged for life."
They could have dialed it back quite a bit and it would have been awesome, but I think their intent was to blow people's minds like in this event:
* I thought the 'Loudest Crowd Moment' thread on the Porch was this thread title. I'm curious to know what people think the loudest shows are.
I was at Iron Maiden at the PNE in Vancouver. I am certainly not a wuss (I have mild tinnitus from listening to music too loud), but at one point of the show, I thought blood was running out of my ears (no kidding!).
Freaking loud.
Wolfmother at the Queen Elizabeth blasted my face off too.
I've heard Maiden is really loud!
I went to ACDC during the Razors Edge tour at MSG, 91 I think? The drummer is working the snare, movie theater style lights come on, guitar barely starts Thunderstruck and crowd goes bat shit crazy! I couldn't make out the song until it was halfway through. The crowd was that loud! So loud that it went silent. Eerie felling.
Same show, Hells Bells. Big huge bell comes down and Brian Johnson hits it with a sledge hammer… multiple times…
…Still the same show… For those about to rock and that cannon… Dear lord that was loud. I actually covered my ears.
My ears rang for 3 days after this…
2nd place goes to Metallica later that year at Nassau Coliseum. I brought ear plugs, decided not to use them, I was 14, what the hell did I know. Ears rang for a few days after that show too. One intro with the gunfire and pyro technics was loud.
tempo n groove,
same ac/dc tour but in cedar rapids, iowa @ the five seasons center. i was sure they cracked the foundation of that venue. that was insane loud & it was crystal clear. son of a!!!! seriously, cracking reinforced concrete in all directions & many, many feet thick. i figured, "ok this place is gonna collapse"
Van Halen diver down tour new haven. Could not hear myself after that one.
Eddie Van Halen played "Eruption" at the Diver Down show I went to (MSG), and then handed me his guitar pick! I still have that brown pick with a gold VH on it...

You would think of the loudest bands I've seen it would have to be The Jimi Hendrix Experience or The Who (who were actually fairly tame in '68) but no, I'd have to go with Blue Cheer followed closely by The Psychedelic Furs (especially the first time I saw them which was at the Warfield in S.F.). Also saw a band in a club in Chico, CA that was so ridiculously loud my date and I left after just a few minutes- too much for too small a space.

I'd probably say the last night of the Spectrum during the intro. Such a small place and everyone losing their shit with the World Series starting up next door and then The video in the beginning and Eddie with the Rocky gloves. Goddamn it's been 5 years.
Soundgarden in Detroit. Hell of a show, but wow, they were loud.
I saw them in Wallingford at the Oakdale Theater and that was easily the loudest show I had been to, from their guitars to Chris' vocals to Matt's pounding. Then again, I was right on the rail in front of Chris and Ben's amps, so that didn't help. My ears were ringing for the next few days. I really think that show made me lose a little bit of hearing in my left ear. I was a bit worried a few months later when I was a few rows from the stage for PJ in Hartford and in front of Mike's and Jeff's amps.
I'm more cautious now when I go to shows now. I hear the Foo Fighters are loud and may have to bring ear plugs if I see them next year when they tour the states. I know I'll have ear plugs next time I see Soundgarden.

I've seen the foos a few times and didn't think they were outrageslly that loud. But SG is def loud no doubt.
The Foos were loud, but the sound was great. I think sometimes my judgement gets impaired when I'm listening to distorted, blurry, raunchy volume vs. clear and crisp volume. The raunchy and distorted music (Soundgarden) seems louder.
