For me there's no correlation between PJ and skulls. I've never once thought about PJ and had an image of a skull pop in my head. But that's just me.

I really like the Lincoln print, though a lighthouse doesn't seem to fit Nebraska and probably should have been used for the Milwaukee show.

Skulls are this years owls in the PJ poster world it seems. Wasn't too long ago everyone was complaining the posters all had owls or birds on them. While I'll say if I don't like a poster, I certainly wouldn't suggest what the posters should have on them. I can't draw for shit.

I dig the Lincoln poster, easily the best of this tour so far.

While I don't see that band telling the artists what to do, I will agree that I think skulls have been played out. As one of the consumers so described above, I have no problem voicing my opinion.

what he said- enough already with the skulls - IMO O:-)

Skulls seem brainless and macho. I bet Chad Krieger has a lot of shirts with skulls on them.

Not sure what you mean by more creative, art is in the eye of the beholder. Like 63Schoefflin, I really like the Lincoln print. It seems more often than not, PJ posters are tied to the cities/areas they play, but not always. And there are thousands of gig posters created every year, so bound to get some overlap. As amazing as an artist like EMEK, or Chuck Sperry,, you see a great deal of similar stuff in each of their prints.

The being more creative was directed at the Seattle 2013 poster which was a complete replica of a previous D Face print from las vegas see:

    http://www.streetartnews.net/2013/11/dface-new-street-art-las-vegas-usa-part.html

    vs.

    http://insidetherockposterframe.blogspot.com/2013/12/pearl-jam-seattle-poster-by-dface-shirt.html

In terms of overlap, there's really only 10-20 PJ posters coming out a year. I get that artists like Emek like to use similar themes, it just seems that with the amount of money involved, it wouldn't be too hard to switch things up.

In 5 minutes, I could come up with more creative themes for the next few shows:

Memphis - fat elvis wrestling a grizzly bear

Detroit - (forefront) lightning bolt though a red wings logo, with a background of decaying buildings being overtaken by plants

Moline - love boat captain on a mississippi river paddle wheeler w/john deere colours

    etc...

I'll admit it, like many PJ fans, I am a poster geek. It started years ago with "ill just get ones from shows I've been to" but has now morphed into "just getting really cool ones" (which for me, Oslo is the only one this year).

To me it seems that a lot of the fans/consumers, put a lot of effort into displaying the posters. Most of us are at an age where, they're not just getting tacked up on some dorm wall; they're getting the royal treatment, being displayed in multi-matted frames that sometimes cost upwards of $200 - 300 just for the frames (see: massive 300 page thread for proof).

So all I'm saying is that as PJ expands the amount of artists they're using (which is cool and fresh), it would be nice to have a bit of a directive from the band, or communication between the artists so that skulls don't appear in so many posters. They just look played out, boring, and tired.

Feel free to flame me down if you think I'm way off base, and I'm not saying the band should curtail artistic freedom, but like in the last year, skulls have appeared in Vancouver, Auckland, Amsterdam (year that one is cooler because of the description), Baltimore, Charlottesville, Lincoln, Tulsa, and maybe more.

Personally, I would prefer city-specific posters. Like in Seattle 09 Surfing sasquatch was rad incorporating the space needle and pacific north west elements, or just other fresh new ideas.

Anyways, that's my rant, I'd be keen to hear what others think.

    Hah so true!

Skulls seem brainless and macho. I bet Chad Krieger has a lot of shirts with skulls on them.

I'd say that's a pretty heavy over generalization. Lincoln was pretty unmacho and well thought out, as are Emek's posters, despite a consistent use of skulls. Just my 2 cents. I agree about the Chad Kreuger comment.

I concur. Too many skulls. There are a couple of skull posters that are cool (like the most recent with the lighthouse.... i kind of liked that), but it's getting ridiculous now. So many skulls! I guess some really love them. There is a LOT of skull art in this world, so it's obviously popular. For me, i just find them too.... what? Masculine? Deathly? Skid-like? Whatever it is, it's definitely also highly unoriginal in almost all cases (Yeah, except for the Riot Act skulls, of course. ;) )

Artists will draw what they are comfortable with. Most don't draw skulls and most won't tailed their skills to draw something city related. Not saying it wouldn't prefer the city related ones but that's just the facts. Thousands of gigposters come out a year... Some good, some bad. Life goes on.

Plus if I bought a print for every show I'd have my flatfile almost filled with gigprints alone.

  • due to an overwhelming amount of posters that i currently have, i only buy posters that are unique/interesting, and if i attended the show. and, i'd have to agree with the op. my wife texted me from the merch line in lincoln about the poster, and i told her to skip because it wasn't very original. (and on a side note, the t-shirts and hoodie on this tour could use some work as well)

i would agree to have posters thematically match the location of the venue. when i was at the pittsburgh show and saw the steel worker, it was immediately a must have.

i would also suggest doing more like the SLC Red Mosquito poster, which is in the top 5 of all time. I feel so lucky to have gone to that show just because of the poster.

so in short skulls seem obvious and lazy and overdone.
