Put it this way. I remember Cardiff 2000 when they ended with it, and this is before Lost Dogs, and the first British shows in 4 years, and only about the second time they'd ventured outside London in the Uk ever. They cranked it up, and I swear 90 % of the audience didn't know it...I did, it was that great quirky old song off the B-side of the Jeremy single! And that was it then. Now, we've just been spoiled.
i like it... and as has been said it gives the show 'closure', Mike starts it and you pretty much know it's the last song.
imind you, 've only seem 'em 3 times and i've had 3 different closers
Yellow Ledbetter
Alive
Indifference
any of those, or RITFW , would do for me... i'm not picky...;)
Oh yeah? Well, I've had about enough of morons and halfwits, dolts, dunces, dullards and dumbbells - and you chowderhead yokel, you blithering hayseed, you - you've had enough of me?
I would think they would get more sick of playing Jeremy or something like that. I won't mention a certain song for fear senrock will whack me with her surfboard.
I think it is a great song to close with because Mike is allowed to come down off his high and Ed can just mumble along if he is tired.
Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away
I'vo only seen two shows, and saw YL once (I have a friend who didnt get to see YL until his 6th show, but he was the guy who spoiled it for everyone in Champaign in 03...so he couldve seen it on his 5th show had he kept his mouth shut)
4/23/03 - Champaign, IL
5/16/06 - Chicago, IL
8/23/09 - Chicago, IL
5/4/10 - St Louis, MO
Since some of the words are different I look at hearing a different song everytime

While bittersweet, I love hearing the first notes of it. Then to see Mike play and the guys relax some, it's just wonderful to me. Their set lists are usually so varied I think it's kind of nice they end with it at least most of the time.
"I'd rather be with an animal." "Those that can be trusted can change their mind." "The in between is mine." "If I don't lose control, explore and not explode, a preternatural other plane with the power to maintain." "Yeh this is living." "Life is what you make it."
>>>I have been disappointed with this tour because they have ended with YL almost every show. Maybe they reached the point in their careers that they decided "fuck it, we've been doing this for almost 16 years, its hard coming up with a different closer every night."
Not really - all the old closers, "Indifference," "RITFW," "Baba O'Riley," etc, still get played. They just usually throw fans the YL bone at the end. It is a great closer. It feels like a farewell, till-next-time song.
I would love to see them close a show with Leavin' Here. Didn't they play that for Letterman one night while the credits were rolling? I think it was the night of Hail, Hail
When they ended it with Alive, i was left with a feeling that the show just stopped not wrapped up. I guess after getting used to it you dont miss it until it is gone. The song gives the show closure and you officially know it is over for the night.
Yep, saw them for the first time in Dublin 06 and they ended with Fuckin Up and I felt a bit like it wasn't the end of the show...(think other people thought so too, as we were walking back from The Point there were cars driving by with YL blaring from their stereos). I've managed to see them 4 times now and only YL twice. I just has to be the last song or you're left feeling like there's more to come

Indifference works too.
but I don't like when they finish on RITFW or Baba..
need a quiet one to start unwinding!
just b/c they dont end with it, doesnt mean they cant play it. they can play it earlier. i think parting ways or immortality would be great enders. check the versions of those songs on "bena. hall" and imagine them at the end of the show.

Yeah, it works for YL, but I wish they kept the lights out of RITFW.
Don't think that would really work these days. RITFW is much more upbeat when they it play it now than it was back in the Boston Garden 1994-04-11 for example.

but I really MISSED it this year, especially in Werchter...last show of the tour SHOULD have YLB (and Smile, but we got that )

In Cinci in 2006 they didn't end with it and the show just had no closure for me! I missed Mike wailing and it kinda made me sad. :(
