Most of us commit these spontaneous acts without forethought to how they'll be perceived by them. We do these things because they're the right thing to do; our conscience wouldn't allow otherwise or certainly take ourselves to task afterward.

Right. It's guilt. Looking to be stroked. Whatever but always for givers self interest not the receiver. It's not a bad thing. Just is. This particular challenge just plays into this human need.

Giving up your seat - did you think twice when you did it?

When I hold the door for someone, give a few bucks to someone who needs it, letting a person ahead of me in line at the market...sure I feel good doing it during and after, but that's not necessarily or always the impetus.

In the end, it's a positive and hopefully a ripple-effect.

It is a good thing as I've stated repeatedly. There were posts prior to mine that questioned people authenticity of this type of challenge.

And I concurred. This "Challenge" is a success due to humans ability to Display their charitable nature. May not give one the warm and fuzzies to think of ones selfishness when giving but it is what it is. And let me not forget the guilt aspect of being challenged. Almost seems as though a psychologist came up with this challenge. "Brilliant".

Really funny to see people getting upset about this seemingly obvious aspect of giving. You do it for yourselves people, get over it. And keep giving. It's a good thing.

Speaking of gripes- I kind of have a gripe against the phrase, "It's all good" . I mean, really, is anything, "all good"? No, I don't think very many things are "all good", that's for sure. But to me, all giving is good. It's all good. Billionaire give millions away? All good. Average person tithes to various causes to help make the world better? All good. Poor person drops a penny in the jar? All good.

Criticizing how others choice to give- not so good.

I can see your point Chadwick, and I think it's why it's so successful. Because successful campaigns tend to do with some sort of incentive for thy self. That's why I said that it's sort of like a selfie… "Look, it's Moi on camera dumping ice water over my head!"

I had a problem with this contest. Volunteering and doing something good for charity or the environment should not equal "selfie of myself doing this good deed". I volunteer for the sake of helping others and/or another greater cause (ex. the earth, etc.). Not for the sake of getting noticed for my good deed. Kinda takes the selfless out of volunteering…

But back to the Ice bucket challenge. I love that it raised so much awareness, I hope another idea catches this fever and can do another cause good. Now if only we can get away from ourselves to raise money and awareness...

I don't mean this accusingly, but isn't your bolded passage a sort of selfie on how your version of charity is better than others'? If you truly only care about the progress of a cause, why is the method of attaining progress so important? I will add, with the experience of a wealth of Boy Scout volunteering, none of it is selfless. It always feels good to do good and that aspect should be encouraged! It also feels good to get recognition for good works and I don't see anything wrong in that!

We have an expression in the basketball circles: fake it 'till you make it. Meaning: you might not be inclined to work as hard and energetic as you feel like in practice, but consciously do it... until it becomes the norm.

People are not generally inclined to be at their best at all times. These types of events at least allow for humans to act well on the conscious level regardless of motivation (vanity... whatever). At a minimum, after participation in event such as these and maybe others... people stand the chance to move from acting generously on the conscious level to acting generously on the unconscious level. If the whole world acted with concern for others on an instinctual basis... the world would be an unbelievable place.

I too have rolled my eyes at some participants, but that is 'my' weakness (being judgemental and cynical). In reality, there can only be good coming from events such as these.
