There's often the theme of "why doesn't anyone care as much as I do?", which can feel condescending. Also, the doomsday stuff is easy to shut off and can be pretty polarizing. Libertarians went into economic doom at any moment mode six years ago, but things still chugged and sputtered along. I don't think the NSA stuff surprised many people in this forum, since it was laid out in the Patriot Act. Maybe some more focused and thoughtful questions about data mining would get some discussion going instead baiting people about wanting to be controlled by the government and false references (tubing tax).

Being someone who understands the tremendous spying capabilities of the United States, I was alrmed by the powers being granted to agencies such as the NSA in 2002, with the blessing of a large part of the American Citizens. I didn't mind that machine pointed outward towards foriegn nations, including our allies, but feared that machine being turned around and pointed inwards towards us. We were stirred into a deep stae of fear that was the flagship of the 'War On Terror'. We were too afraid of foriegners and people who didn't look like us or dress like us or believed the same religion as us, that we allowed this to happen to us.
I was pretty outspoken about warrantless wiretaps in 2003, as well as the FISA courts rubber stamping anything that crossed its desks and I STILL oppose government intrusion of our people. I remember the moronic responses I got from my opposition.... mainly the most often used one, "I'm not doing anything illegal... they can spy on me all they want". Ironically, the people who held those views back then are the ones crying the loudest about the same thing today. The ONLY thing that has changed is the person in the Oval Office. It is political partisanship bullshit as usual.

THAT... is why this thing is a joke. Americans WANTED us to be watched because they were so afraid of Middle Eastern people in our midst... enven if those people were/are American citizens. We allowed this to happen to us due to our own paranoia and mistrust of our own people. It is way too late to do anything now because it has become policy. Also, I do a lot of domestic business flying and I see all sorts of people pulled from the line. I also know that the disabled are typically screened by the TSA in seperate lines. The wheelchair will set off the metal detector and the disable person cannot stand in the body scanned. Disabled people MUST go through a seperate line in order to screen all of the carry on items, including the chair, itself.
So, perhaps that ordeal you describe occured as standard operation procedure regarding disables persons and has nothing to do with the world you perceive through your prejudiced glasses.
I suggest the you remove those glasses from time to time to see the world as it really is, rather than the way you wish to see it.

What you saw and interpreted was your sister being singled out as a Terror Suspect to be scanned by TSA as some sort of maniacal government plot to destroy the fabric of American life... when the simple truth is, your sister was merely being scanned in a seperate line due to the implications of passing a wheelchair through the security check. What you read into is was brought on by your own inferences based upon your own preconceived views.
In fact, if that "Middle Easterner covered from head to toe in full Arab gear" was in a wheelchair, they would have had to go through the same TSA checkpoint procedures as your sister.
But, that thought never crossed your mind, did it, sir? My guess would be that your ingrained hatred towards people of the Middle East tainted your viewpoint.
