What is the "See previous table for differences in wording"? I'm curious as sometimes how you ask the question determines the type of response you get. Also, do you know whether they asked the same people in 2013 as they did in 2006 or was it another random sample of folks. And what was the sample size? Pew does good work so I'm not questioning the methods as much as I'm just curious.
The difference I find most interesting is amongst the Independents. Why might that be? Could it be because as we learn more about the program(s), we don't fear it as much and then have a different opinion as to its acceptance? Could the same be true for gay marriage? Or any subject that we might have previously been ignorant of? Thoughts?

Can't pull from it to post, but basically it is the same question worded differently. In my opinion the 2006 survey sounded a bit more harsh.

I agree that the question posed in 2006 was much more sinister than that of 2013. I have visions of a darkened room with guys with headsets listening in on phone calls versus servers collecting zillions of phone numbers dialed into a searchable database. Which one is more disturbing and/or a violation of you right to privacy?

Peace.
I think they are equal. If they couldn't tell what was going on with "metadata" then they would listen specifically to people, which I still believe they are doing after reviewing the data they do have. For people to think they just stopped is kind of naive and way too trusting of an entity that doesn't deserve it.
It is sad to me that civil rights and possibly approving of violations of them comes down to which team a person is on...can't we once all agree that Americans deserve to be treated with decency and respect by our government...no matter who they are.
I found their distinction between what happens when they say do you and would you in their questions was pretty interesting as I have never really thought about it that way.
