is the car necessary to visit the city? i would like to spend time not only downtown but also at cooper Young. Any info is very much appreciated
No, cars aren't necessary but they are preferable to public transit. But if a car is not an option you will still be able to get where you need to go. Cooper Young is my neighborhood. I love it.
The best place to see the sunset is Tom Lee Park. Luckily enough the 3 founding fathers of Memphis donated a sizeable chunk of the downtown riverfront (their land at the time) to the city with the contingency that it can only be used for public use. Otherwise, I doubt we would still have a wide open green space on the river. There are several good spots to catch the sunset right around the park too. Some others to google: Martyr's Park, the Peabody Hotel rooftop (really cool), Madison Hotel rooftop, Mud Island (not sure if the southern part of the park where we have the River Walk is going to be open when you are here for the show), and Mud Island Park.

is there reliable public transportation from the airport to downtown?
Yes, MATA has a route that goes from the airport to downtown. Looks like it is Route 2. Check www.matatransit.com for the schedule when you are arriving. Also, there are of course taxis, Über, and Lyft. I'm not sure Uber and Lyft will work for the airport. There was some kind of legal battle over their right to operate at the airport and I'm not sure where it stands. Last I heard they were operating despite a cease and desist letter. America! But regular taxis would definitely work if you're not keen on the buses.

How is parking in downtown nashville during the weekend?
I honestly don't know. I would assume it would not be an issue unless there are several big events going on at the same time, given the looks of their downtown. Google can help you much better than I in this case.
I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too.
Yes, there is a vast selection of casinos 30 minutes south of Memphis in Tunica County, MS. I would assume Horseshoe and Harrah's are still fun, but it's been a few years. I used to work at Hollywood Casino, which was a cool place but the farthest from Memphis.

How bad is the motel 6 downtown on South Pauline street. Thinking about it as its 1.5 miles from the Forum and 50 bucks a night. Is it a relatively safe area?

I've actually stayed there, granted it was 9 years ago. It's a safe enough area in daylight, but i wouldn't want be outside of it late at night, put it that way. Honestly I would look elsewhere. When I stayed the rooms were less than meh. There's a reason it's $50 in downtown Memphis. That said, if the budget is tight then this is probably similar to any other cheap hotel and it's close enough to the fun stuff.
Feel free to DM me some other options if you decide to look around more and I'll give you my opinion on the best of the group.

Is walking from the Madison Hotel to the venue fairly safe?
Oh yes, very safe. You'll probably end up walking down the pedestrian only part of Main Street and cutting down Beale, which will have plenty of people. Generally the heart of downtown is safe.

Where is Elvis? Really. We all know he is alive and well there, just not sure where.
Nashville threw a bunch of money at him and he relocated there. But he immediately "let himself go" and no Memphian has heard from him since. I bet he has a house on the lake in Hendersonville.
Excellent!
There's a free shuttle that will take you to Sun Studio, Graceland and the Rock n Soul Museum.
The National Civil Rights Museum is closed on Tuesdays. My wife and I travelled from Minnesota to Memphis two years ago to see EV. The show was cancelled and couldn't return the plane tickets. We made the most of our time in Memphis. Loved it. Loved it so much we actually just decided to make the trip again! We are commmmmmming back!!!

Glad to hear it. I'm quite a fan of my hometown, but I didn't really appreciate it until I lived elsewhere and knew what I was missing. Memphis is not for everyone, so I'm always glad to hear when people enjoy it. I always get real excited when I end up in conversations with tourists.

How is parking in downtown nashville during the weekend?
There shouldn't be much of a problem. The Titans (NFL team) are playing at home that Sunday the 12th at noon, but there is still plenty of parking around as most of the people park on the other side of the river where the stadium is. Guess it depends on when you were planning on going downtown. There are plenty of public lots around Broadway. If you were planning on going down later that afternoon, you should be able to find space very easily. I would just steer clear of driving around certain parts of downtown around 3pm local as it can get quite hectic after the Titans game gets over

What are the top couple of BBQ joints near the venue/hotels?
Central BBQ and the Rendezvous. Both are great but Central BBQ is probably a bit more consistent than the Rendezbous, from what I gather. BBQ Shop, Cozy Corner, Tops, Payne's, and Interstate BBQ are all a little farther away (close but still driving distance) but are also really good.
Google before you go to see what's good. Most places are known for a particular thing. For example, Cozy Corner is known for ribs and Cornish game hen.

How safe is Olive Branch? Only 17 miles from venue and reasonably priced. I canceled the Motel 6 downtown. Thanks.
Olive Branch is safe. I would assume it has it's own element but on the whole it's more suburban. Crime can happen anywhere but I like your chances in OB more than that Motel 6. That Motel 6 is in a weird part of downtown (really outside of the entertainment district of downtown and it gets a bit lonely at night) plus it's a crappy hotel.
I feel weird sending someone to a suburb, but between that Motel 6 and a burb, I'd go with the burb.

So I procrastinated in getting a hotel room and there are not a lot of options left downtown now. Is the Quality Inn off off Camilla in a safe location or would I be better off traveling 9 miles from the Inn at Thousand Oaks or The Hotel Memphis? Not looking to be at my hotel very much but want to be safe.

Those are the only 3 you found affordable vacancies at? The Quality Inn is basically right across the street from the aforementioned Motel 6. But I believe it has better lot lighting and security. I would read some reviews. That area is not the best but it is def not the worst. I just wouldn't hang out outside late at night. Just being honest.
The other two hotels are farther away but about the same as far as area safety. Not great, but probably fine if you're just going to crash there and not hang outside at night.
If you look around some more let me know the hotel names and I'll give you my opinion on those also if you like.

I appreciate you getting back to me. My options are pretty limited at this point and I'm still trying to see what's out there. The reviews at the Quality Inn aren't great and kind of shady but it's close to everything. If I have any other questions, I'll let you know.
Thanks again!
