it is a good poll.... gotta say...

I think I have decided that this is my favorite album... period...

I use it to describe other albums that have that disjointed feeling, but put together it represents a whole thought.... "it's the no code feel"

despite the fact I picked smile... it is a coin toss between that track and sometimes that just ties the whole thing together for me perfectly....
Houston, Texas... Believe it or not, there are 7 million people here... must be a couple of fans who'd love to see you play.

Definitely a contender for my favorite album, and In My Tree is my fave song on the album.... I'm going to listen to No Code right now! :)

I'm going to listen to a live version of No Code (i.e., concerts performances of each song from various bootlegs) right now!

That's a fine idea..... Is there a live "I'm Open" and "Mankind"?
    I m open Hartford 06. Mankind Randall's night two
Cool, thanks! :) ... Now, is there a boot for those? Or are those still in the running for vault releases?
Still in the running. I think the Hartford show was the first time it was ever played live.

I'll ride the wave where it takes me......

Pitchfork Review from back in the day:
    No Code
    Epic
    Rating: 5.4/10

I can't deny my respect for Pearl Jam. They rock it to the top. They don't stop. Not only are they musically amazing, they're also one of the world's most famous bands and are able to exercize the political aspects that come with the territory. The only other band with that kind of political power would be the Smashing Pumpkins, and the only message they're sending is that balding men should shave their heads.

No Code comes in a neato, quadruple- gatefold package with 144 polaroids on the cover (all taken by Vedder) and 13 Polaroid replicas with lyrics scrawled on their backs. You can only imagine how expensive this must have been. And on top of all that cash, No Code doesn't seem to be doing very well on the charts. Oops.

That's probably due to the fact that each of Pearl Jam's albums are just mildly more disappointing than their predecessors. Not to say the disc doesn't have its moments. You've got the thrashing, typical Pearl Jam song, "Hail, Hail," the Bono-fied "In My Tree" and the All-American rock-out, "Habit," -- but most of the songs just drag.

The opening track, "Sometimes," a Neil Young- inspired dramafest, is boring beyond the point of sleep and the Grateful Deadly campfire singalong, "Who You Are," makes me gag with hatred. I can't remember the rest of the songs. That's 'cause there's a ton of filler here. In fact, it's almost all filler. Like those weak remix EPs they put out to tide you over until the next big release. I keep wondering when the next real Pearl Jam record is coming out, 'cause I wanna hear some good, old fashioned Tenstyle rock and roll. I guess "Hail, Hail" and "Habit" will have to do.

It's a nice listen for the long drive to the cabin, like early R.E.M. (to be used as background music only), but if you're looking for the overpowering, brooding, political hate anthems that this band has formerly been known to put out, just hope you can find it on the next record.

I always felt that Ten was PJ's best album, but after listening to NC on vinyl the other day, and after reading this old review, I will change my position. Ryan Schreiber, I officially submit to you No Code as my favorite PJ album.

  • We are all aware that No Code is a masterpiece. But which of these moments, in your opinion, pushes it over the edge?

"And now I rub my eyes... for he has returned
Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...
For he still smiles... and he's still strong"

Some may connect Off He Goes with a life-long friend they know but for me it describes my inner self and the battle between my true spirit shining and the damage self doubting myself in depression holds me back.
But No Code cannot be quantified in fragments. It's probably my favorite Album that flows from start to finish as one awesome emotional rollercoaster...tears maybe want to come at but always makes me "Smile"

the beautifully subdued opening message to God
I say the beautifully subdued opening message to God only because halfway through the first track, it's evident No Code is new territory for the guys, and I knew I was in for something special with the rest of the album the first time I heard it.

Who You Are got cut because of the "aforementioned verse" situation hahaha.

Tough call. In My Tree and Present Tense are my favs on the album...
I find In My Tree lacks a bit live...it has a lot going on production-wise on the album; it doesn't translate as well live as most of their songs....the drums in particular. Maybe it's the drummer, maybe it's the production, I don't know....
Present Tense is the exact opposite. While I'm not a huge fan of the distorted guitar sound Mike uses live (I like how quiet it is on the album), it is more than made up for by the killer singalong, the addition of that pounding floor tom, (beginning the second time the 'you can spend your time alone' comes around)...and they absolutely shred the outro live....(check Columbia 08 version)
    So....I guess I'm saying I can't choose lol

In My Tree is one of my fave PJ songs, but I agree that it isn't quite done justice live as far as I can tell from bootlegs. Haven't seen it live personally yet (and it's a white whale either way). But on the album it's just spectacular!

Another good option would be the masterful track flow of the album or the intricate, subtle nuances of the album that are pure ear candy.

The way that this album begins and ends, and the flow of everything in between makes this my favorite album of all time and a pure masterpiece.

No code is one of the most thought provoking and profound albums I have ever listened to, there are many highlights as you've mentioned, lyrically it's pearl jam at there best, leaving the listener second guessing at the interpretation , using the all seeing eye to me is statement of acknowledgement of the power in place and how ever hard we try an change things for the positive were left powerless, present tense is a reflection of these ideas all we have and own is the present and to go back to the question the fade out is spiritually connecting, like the rest of the record is a deep examination of 90's culture and survival of its lost dream. It's just my opinion that's all.....

Glad this got bumped. Present Tense is such a roller coaster of a song that delivers at every turn and dip, lyrics, music and jam out. Actually I'm unsure why it's not quite my favorite song, if someone asked me "why do you like Wash better than Present Tense" I wouldn't have any good reason.
