You guys are right, I never read Shawshank but I LOVE the movie.  But my personal experience with any book made into movie production, what's left out and what's added, usually disappoints.
Not the case for Shawshank. I mean, some things are changed (Red is not supposed to be a black man btw - he's actually supposed to be a red-headed Irishman, which the movie manages to reference subtly). Other things are replicated in the movie word for word. But the movie has a better flow (largely because there is more character continuity - in the book there is a lot more turn over of prison staff and wardens, which of course effects how the crimes committed by them play out), and the characters are much more endearing in the film IMHO, even the antagonists.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata
