Here is a journal article about how people were freaking out about what kids had horrifically become in the 50s... comparing them to kids in the 20s. I bet people in the 20s thought their kids were all fucked up compared to kids in the 1890s.... and so on. Some things never change. ;) (although actually, from reading this article, it kind of sounds like kids in the 50s were worse than they are now!).

so because this type of thing happened in the 50's before cell phones and internet that makes this less important ? or no big deal ? but I'll bet drug use in the 50 was much less then it is today amung the younger people.

That's not what I said at all. I was addressing the comment about how kids are worse now than they used to be - kids going to hell in a hand basket type thinking.... I'm sure drug use is much higher now, so my other point is that, since this kind of shit has always happened, drugs seem to be an easy thing to blame, but not the right thing to blame.

Just a helpful hint, sir. Maybe you should get a better sense of the history of the country you are so proud of and get a better understanding of cause and effect and the progression of events that mold our culture.
The 1950s... most Americans picture tree lined streets of Ozzie and Harriet. That was/is television and television has always been false imagery. Ozzie and Harriet may have looked perfect on television, but that's because they edited out all the parts where Ozzie beat the crap our of Harriet because in the 50s, women needed to be show their place. They also cut out the scenes where Ozzie was drinking bourbon every night and Harriet was on a steady fix of amphetimine and barbituates to cope with her life in the guilded cage.
Amphetamines and barbiturates were called “mother’s little helpers” as many women developed a habit for the stimulation and sedative effects of these medicines. The predecessors to the modern Drug Enforcement Administration and other government and private organizations began setting up education programs to stem the tide of abuse and addiction that rose with the creation of these medicines.
After WWII there was increased development of new medicines: tranquilizers, new amphetamines and barbiturates, new opioids (synthesized opium products). Weight loss products were sold containing amphetamines and ephedrine. National marketing of these medicines increased their use. This post-war era brought with it affluence, social change and mass use of medicines and drugs. Many of the stimulant, tranquilizer and sedative medicines were misused. Think, Elvis.
    ...
And please, don't be like one of those mental deficients I sometimes encounter that claim the I hate America. I don't. I love my country. I know, she is not perfect and has done some pretty terrible things in her past... but, which country hasn't? I am honest about America and do not pretend she doesn't have a lot of faults. I don't pretend she is perfect and I don't pretend we ever had a Golden Age that didn't have some terrible imperfections.
The 1950s sucked.... just as much as the 60s, 70s, 80s and on for many Americans.
