stone is without a doubt the most talented musician in the band. i think it's safe to say and almost guarantee he gets bored repeatedly playing most of PJ's live staples (DTE, evenflow, alive, given to fly, etc, etc, etc) which is interesting because at the same time he is the most thick headed in the band when playing their more obscure songs that hardly see any love live. his on stage debates with ed are classic and stone always wins. you would think he would be more willing to play some of those tracks we haven't been treated to live in a long time (looking at you binaural and riot act).
i don't think he is mailing anything in live. he just gets in a groove and let's mike and ed be the showman.
This. I remember interviews where he said if it were up to him he'd like to mix it up more than just playing the hits.... Then... The No Way debate at PJ20 was classic. Not sure why Stone wouldn't want to play his own song. Everyone else was on board and he was like "nope". He lost that debate! hahaha
I remember holding up a "Hard To Imagine" sign at the 1998 B'Ham show. I was on Mike's side but Stone saw it and starting shaking his head "No". I don't know why he downplays/doesn't like to play his own stuff.

My buddy and I used to joke about Stone's "duckwalk": the way he kind off marches in place and bobs his head while playing. Now that I'm (finally) learning to play guitar, I've found it's a great way to keep time. I like Stone. Someone else said this already, but definitely the member of the band I think I'd most like to hang with. Seems like a chill dude. Stone Zone.
With a band like this, probably not, although Fatal seems like a song of solitude

He seemed to be having a great time in Portland last year.
"There's a $10,000 bill in it for you."
"Oh yeah? Which president's on it?"
"Uh, all of them. They're having a party. Jimmy Carter's passed out on the couch."
Well Mike and Jeff & Ed are allways jumping and moving around alot and now you want Stone to do the same i'd say we allready have enought moving parts up on that stage .....
Given the choice, I will take Stone every day of the week and twice on Stonedays.
Mike is all about the flash.
Stone is all about the class.

I think Stone is a bit of a perfectionist. In terms of not wanting to play "No Way," I think it's because they've failed to find a way to recreate the trippy bridge of that song, which is so good on the Yield album. That bridge is clearly a studio creation and such an important element to the track, and I think Stone doesn't want the band to fake their way through it in a really half-ass way, which they do whenever they play it. As far as "Hard to Imagine," I recall Stone saying in an interview that there was a period of time when he didn't feel he was playing it correctly, and that it really bothered him. He even mentioned talking to a psychiatrist about it. Check it out: http://www.avclub.com/article/pearl-jams-stone-gossard-walks-through-his-bands-b-104188

Hey, thanks for posting that.... it makes a lot more sense now. btw.... I did finally get Hard to Imagine in 1998 about 2 shows later....so maybe he went home and practiced it on the bus.

That's not really a fair picture. That was immediately after everyone came on stage. Bill Nye went up to Stone and was fanning his guitar because he was completely killing it.
