Coca-Cola Super Bowl ad ignites online debate

I have spoken to a second generation American, she explained that her family was proud of the day they learned English and proud of the day they became Americans. I do think people should keep their heritage and culture but I also do beleive immigrants should learn English. Some people are going to the extreme and bringing too much negativity to this idea, but giving them the "spotlight" is just fueling their fire. (Edit: I think my grammar skills need to be updated too

When I saw that commercial, I immediately tweeted that it would make some people mad. It doesn't bother me a bit and I don't feel it should bother anyone, but I knew that it would.backseatLover12 said:WTF? I watched half the game last night, so I didn't know about this until now. Surprised no one's brought it up. Seems that people forget that we live in a melting pot.

That's because it's not a big issue for the majority of people.Drowned Out said:Oh, and.....
Has there been any fuss in the mainstream about the Soda Stream ad with Scarlett Johansson? I follow a lot of indy media on fb and it's been a big issue there....
But unsurprisingly, I've seen little to no mention of it on tv or in papers.
Soda Stream's manufacturing plant is located in an illegal Israeli settlement, built on Palestinian land in the West Bank. Johansson was made aware of this and decided to honour her agreement with them, while spouting a bunch of bullshit that sounded like it was written by Abe Foxman. Oxfam is considering dropping her as an ambassador because of this. Also, Coke and Pepsi wanted the NFL to censor the ad....not because of the ties to apartheid, but because it made reference to their brands. And here we are debating an ad's merit based on the languages used to sing a song, when an ad that directly supports oppression seems to have drawn much less attention. The only people we should try to get even with...

Good one. I mute as well, but Will start getting creative with adding dialogue. I just might crack myself up.brianlux said:I seldom watch TV but when I do I hit the mute button for ads as to avoid the brain washing, then I make up my own dialog to go with them- they're more fun that way!

True, I know where she stands now, but I now keep more of a distance knowing her truth. Fact is, people retain their "friends" when they are closet racists. Being all up front about it makes you lose friends.Cosmo said:

But why does she get so offended when I tell her that she should take care of her kid when she brings him over and breaks my daughter's toys? Because some people can sure dish it out, but can't take it.
Whatcha gonna do, right?
At least, you know where she stands. Which is more that a lot of people can say. The closet racist is is not only a racist... he/she is a liar, too.
...
And... i know where you are coming from. I have a lifelong friend who is a Christian and is constantly judging people on their words or actions and yet... one of the phrases that is mostly heard from is mouth is, 'Don't you judge me.' He NEVER gets the point we make when we call him out on this. He always has a reason WHY he is not judging someone... he is 'commenting' on them... even when his comment is, 'That person is an idiot for ...'.0 -

This vintage Coke commercial should have had more outcry. They may be singing in English, but how dare they sing about the world when they should be singing about 'merica! And look at all the minorities in it!http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ib-Qiyklq-Q

i've contended that racism is a problem in america for a while ... and that it isn't just whites vs others ... it's minority against other minorities as well ... but it's much easier to ignore it and say it's only a handful of people ...
it's why i like living in toronto ... of course it's far from perfect (ahem mayor) but the celebration of multiculturalism has worked here ... no melting pot ...0 -
I don't think I have blinders on (or rose-colored glasses either). Much as racism is an issue everywhere - I do believe there are more people who place character above all else.
And, also as one living in a city chock full of non-natives, it's pretty cool to hear different languages, experience other cultures, enjoy a ton of kickass restaurants with menus the world-over. Etc.0 -
a story about a meeting my co-worker had with our former PM here in Canada (Jean Chretien) ... he told her the issue that was the most difficult to deal with in his time as PM was not the Iraq war or scandal or Quebec ... it was gay marriage ... he said that in the open - people will tell you they don't care about the issue but in the privacy of anonymity - many were opposed to it ...
that's the nature of racism ... you can sit in a room full of different religions, cultures and what not and everything seems fine but the reality is that there is hate in a lot of people ... it's not to say there aren't a lot of people who spread love and tolerance ... it's that if you allow the hate to fester - it grows and consumes ... this stuff doesn't get better unless it's acknowledged ...0 -

I was more put off by my nephew asking me why the guy was running around nearly naked (Beckham) and then trying to get a 9 year old to understand why a clothing store (H&M) would want to advertise a guy running around in his underwear.
After my explanation he thought the commercial was cool. (Maybe he is gay? Maybe a 9 year old would like it better than a 39 year old man? Lol. I thought it was a stupid ad but it it had been Kate Moss I probably would have thought it was cool too just for the sexiness factor.)
People over-think this shit way too much. You like it or you do not.

I thought the McDonalds' ad was terrible. I cannot believe it got past their 'filters' and aired in the most expensive and viewed time slots available for purchase.
You know... the one that tried to speak to McDonalds myths and had real people ask questions like: "What exactly is in a chicken nugget?" and "Is it true that just beaks and talons make up the nugget?" and "Is pink goo actually an ingredient in a nugget?"
Obviously, they are trying to debunk common perception, but I think the way they went about it actually heightened the level of wariness the consumer base has for 'nuggets'. Further, advertising 101 suggests promoting your product favourably. This ad was tantamount to Levis selling their jeans using Rob Ford as the model (pee stains and all)."My brain's a good brain!"0 -
here is a simple fact -
the night before the super bowl i declared the following statement
"if i were the CEO of coca-cola, i would not have my adds on the fucking super bowl. they can stick their high dollar bullshit up someone else's ass." - me
" yeah, & drop off several hundred thousand dollars worth of free coke in the parking lot" - my brother's friend
"as well as some whiskey" - me
"it would go down in history that coca-cola told the super bowl adds debacle to suck a big one & the coca-cola company would make more $$$ than all the others" - me
