I don't think I have blinders on (or rose-colored glasses either). Much as racism is an issue everywhere - I do believe there are more people who place character above all else.
And, also as one living in a city chock full of non-natives, it's pretty cool to hear different languages, experience other cultures, enjoy a ton of kickass restaurants with menus the world-over. Etc.
a story about a meeting my co-worker had with our former PM here in Canada (Jean Chretien) ... he told her the issue that was the most difficult to deal with in his time as PM was not the Iraq war or scandal or Quebec ... it was gay marriage ... he said that in the open - people will tell you they don't care about the issue but in the privacy of anonymity - many were opposed to it ...
that's the nature of racism ... you can sit in a room full of different religions, cultures and what not and everything seems fine but the reality is that there is hate in a lot of people ... it's not to say there aren't a lot of people who spread love and tolerance ... it's that if you allow the hate to fester - it grows and consumes ... this stuff doesn't get better unless it's acknowledged ...

I was more put off by my nephew asking me why the guy was running around nearly naked (Beckham) and then trying to get a 9 year old to understand why a clothing store (H&M) would want to advertise a guy running around in his underwear.
After my explanation he thought the commercial was cool. (Maybe he is gay? Maybe a 9 year old would like it better than a 39 year old man? Lol. I thought it was a stupid ad but it it had been Kate Moss I probably would have thought it was cool too just for the sexiness factor.)
People over-think this shit way too much. You like it or you do not. If people boycotted soda we would have better health. Go for it!
I thought the McDonalds' ad was terrible. I cannot believe it got past their 'filters' and aired in the most expensive and viewed time slots available for purchase.
You know... the one that tried to speak to McDonalds myths and had real people ask questions like: "What exactly is in a chicken nugget?" and "Is it true that just beaks and talons make up the nugget?" and "Is pink goo actually an ingredient in a nugget?"
Obviously, they are trying to debunk common perception, but I think the way they went about it actually heightened the level of wariness the consumer base has for 'nuggets'. Further, advertising 101 suggests promoting your product favourably. This ad was tantamount to Levis selling their jeans using Rob Ford as the model (pee stains and all).
the night before the super bowl i declared the following statement
"if i were the CEO of coca-cola, i would not have my adds on the fucking super bowl. they can stick their high dollar bullshit up someone else's ass." - me
" yeah, & drop off several hundred thousand dollars worth of free coke in the parking lot" - my brother's friend
"as well as some whiskey" - me
"it would go down in history that coca-cola told the super bowl adds debacle to suck a big one & the coca-cola company would make more $$$ than all the others" - me
it should say the following: i'm an asshole with no brain or you're in america, speak any language you like, we're good to go, sooner or later we'll figure it out
The irony... it sounds like the people who are screaming for 'English Only'.... are the ones most likely to have gotten a 'D' in English.
What's extra funny about this is the Yankees sticker...that team has how many non-Americans playing for them? Not to mention the amount of players who wouldn't be there if their non-American parents didn't come to this country.
well then lets deport them and their non American familys, I believe speaking english is required before getting citizenship...I mean unless you are not legally a citizen and just some dirt bag that snuk over here and then demanded your rights...I mean because here in America we love paying the housing and medical bills for people that sneek across our borders.

Godfather.
I honestly can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not because you're holding up the importance of speaking English so high, yet you're firing off misspellings left and right. If you're on a little mobile phone then, my bad, I understand. It's just that I'd like to take you seriously, regardless of your stance.

I should clarify that I meant "not natural born Americans." I can't speak to whether or not they're now citizens.

... I am fluent in this language... I'll translate it for you: "Well then, let's just deport those non-American families because I believe that speaking English should be prerequisite to gaining U.S. citizenship. Meaning, unless you are a legal U.S. citizen and not just some dirtbag that has crossed over the border without the proper, legal paperwork, with the sole intent of coming in to this country and demanding the same rights as afforded to legal and naturalized U.S. citizens..." Then... well, the rest just sort of deteriorates into some sort of unintelligible garbled nonsense... something about 'America' and Borders Bookstores (I'm purely guessing) and who knows what.

Haha, I understood the point the first time but thanks.
I wonder why you think this way though. I mean I kind of get what you're saying but, at the same time, not at all. How is someone's inability to speak English a detriment to you or anyone else? Why should it effect whether or not they may be granted citizenship when it's really only a disadvantage to them? American is not a language and English has never been the sole language of this country. It doesn't make sense to me.

Or that (for example) Mexico, is in America too. They are Americans.
Like if you ever get stopped at those 'checkpoints', a person (often) is asked 'are you a 'citizen' of the united states?', not 'Are you an American citizen?' etc.
and about English, I mean the root for many words (of many popular english words) come from other languages. Admiral ,alcohol ,orange, serendipity, sofa ,sugar, candy, coffee, cotton , guitar etc etc etc.

Sorry, Cosmo. I thought that was godfather's post. Your translation helped...a valiant effort overall to understand.
My reaction to the ad "I guess they are all singing the song in different languages. Ok" Had no idea that there would be controversy. Didn't mind the ad. But I do mind the unhealthy soft drinks that they peddle!
The irony... it sounds like the people who are screaming for 'English Only'.... are the ones most likely to have gotten a 'D' in English.
So true! The ones who make the most virulent comments online about "English only" and "foreigners go home" have the worst spelling, grammar, syntax, etc.
