WTF? I watched half the game last night, so I didn't know about this until now. Surprised no one's brought it up. Seems that people forget that we live in a melting pot.

america is so chock full of sad, spoiled, ignorant, entitled, hateful, racist, patriotic (another form of racism), close-minded religious bigots, and cool-aid drinkin fools that i hang my head in shame to be from this never-great nation.

Twitterers, Tweeters, whateverthefuckterm...they're such a tiny voice, no? Let's not give them a megaphone.

My mom came to the US from Iran in 1948. I still have some of the handwritten papers she wrote while attending Columbia University, with mark-ups by her professors correcting (and praising!) her grammar. What a struggle it must've been, to learn another language lightyears away from the native tongue - and then to master it.

(though she still, sweetly, fucks up certain words and phrases)

America IS beautiful, for the many threads brought here and then woven around.

    Like Carole King says...a tapestry.
  • ahh hate is alive and well in america. at least this way it is out in the open where we can all get a big whiff of it.

i am not surprised by this in the least.

I'm going to go way out on a limb here.. but, I'm going to guess that FOX News will make a 'Real News Story' out of this.

either that or they will run away from it and leave the real, ahem "liberal media" take the lead on this one...

While we're sniffing in the stench of hate, can't forget that some sweet-smelling flowers are out there too. Probably a whole lot more.

    Fields of 'em.

Shit's alive and well all over - ain't limited to the US or any country. I too like to know where people stand, whether or not we're on a similar path. But fuck me if I'll let a few nimrods on social media sidetrack me or speak louder than those with more resonant and honorable voices.

A 'tapestry'?.....I was always taught in school that America is a 'melting pot'; anyone who comes to America should assimilate to American culture....and Canada was a cultural 'fruitcake' :D ....a mix of cultures to be celebrated for their differences.
I definitely prefer 'tapestry' over fruitcake...but either is preferable to 'melting pot', IMO :)

I'm guessing they will somehow link this with some sort of Kenyan plot to turn America into a fundamentalist Islamic state that supports Shria Law and is fully supported by the Liberals who wish to rename Washington D.C. to Benghazi, D.C. and take away all of the guns so they can force us all to get abortions... even the men.

Hey, I thought California was considered the fruitcake!

The term "melting pot" always makes me crave hot cheesy fondue.

    Oh, and.....
Has there been any fuss in the mainstream about the Soda Stream ad with Scarlett Johansson? I follow a lot of indy media on fb and it's been a big issue there....
But unsurprisingly, I've seen little to no mention of it on tv or in papers.
Soda Stream's manufacturing plant is located in an illegal Israeli settlement, built on Palestinian land in the West Bank. Johansson was made aware of this and decided to honour her agreement with them, while spouting a bunch of bullshit that sounded like it was written by Abe Foxman. Oxfam is considering dropping her as an ambassador because of this. Also, Coke and Pepsi wanted the NFL to censor the ad....not because of the ties to apartheid, but because it made reference to their brands. And here we are debating an ad's merit based on the languages used to sing a song, when an ad that directly supports oppression seems to have drawn much less attention.

I always heard the term 'stew', retaining the basis of the majority culture while incorporating the elements of all the other cultures that came to this country and infused America with a wide variety of religions, languages, foods, etc. Acculturation rather than assimilation. Nevertheless, seems like the food references are aplenty!
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

    Canada/California = fruitcake.....either way, we're all a bunch of bakers ;)

Melting pot makes me think more of Gilligan's Island - people being cooked in a giant cauldron by some kind of bush tribe....even tho there IS a fondue restaurant here by that name. mmmmm....fondue.

    Thanx for that.
The internet really does allow people to say what they truly believe. People will never tell your their true racist views in person, because they do not want to be judged for them. Behind the anonymity of a computer screen, they can let their true colors can fly.

Drowned, I hadn't even thought of that. My first image was -

Cosmo, I think people's character (or lack thereof) reveal themselves eventually - whether via actions or words or lack of both - though definitely accelerated by the ease of spewing bile and hitting send. Such is the price paid for this technology and in the end, it's OK. One, I don't want them bottling that shit up, plus I like when the facade comes off. Reminds me of that Twilight Zone with the masks.

(and damned food references! I just finished lunch and now have to see what sweets our office kitchen yields)

I WISH people would reveal their true feelings. I would much rather know who I was dealing with, rather than some fake afront. All i can go by now are those little hints, such as 'Now... I'm not a racist, but...' or 'I don't have anything against the Jews, but...'.
And...I really don't care if people ARE racist. I just don't like being lied to.
    ...
And besides... who gives a shit if they drink Coke or Pepsi? I love the comments about how they are going to personally boycott Coke... go ahead, has Coke ever advertised they are the official soft drink of Xenophobics?

I seldom watch TV but when I do I hit the mute button for ads as to avoid the brain washing, then I make up my own dialog to go with them- they're more fun that way!

  • I have a friend who flat out told me she is racist, and unapologetically. She tends to like things "up front". Fine then. But why does she get so offended when I tell her that she should take care of her kid when she brings him over and breaks my daughter's toys? Because some people can sure dish it out, but can't take it.

I have spoken to a second generation American, she explained that her family was proud of the day they learned English and proud of the day they became Americans. I do think people should keep their heritage and culture but I also do beleive immigrants should learn English. Some people are going to the extreme and bringing too much negativity to this idea, but giving them the "spotlight" is just fueling their fire. (Edit: I think my grammar skills need to be updated too :D )

When I saw that commercial, I immediately tweeted that it would make some people mad. It doesn't bother me a bit and I don't feel it should bother anyone, but I knew that it would.

Good one. I mute as well, but Will start getting creative with adding dialogue. I just might crack myself up.

True, I know where she stands now, but I now keep more of a distance knowing her truth. Fact is, people retain their "friends" when they are closet racists. Being all up front about it makes you lose friends.

This vintage Coke commercial should have had more outcry. They may be singing in English, but how dare they sing about the world when they should be singing about 'merica! And look at all the minorities in it!

i've contended that racism is a problem in america for a while ... and that it isn't just whites vs others ... it's minority against other minorities as well ... but it's much easier to ignore it and say it's only a handful of people ...

it's why i like living in toronto ... of course it's far from perfect (ahem mayor) but the celebration of multiculturalism has worked here ... no melting pot ...
