Man, I sure feel for all those folks.

Aside from earthquakes, Mother Nature has treated me with kid gloves.

to be fair ... if you're not used to it - it's gonna much things up large ... it may not seem like a big deal to us up north but if you don't have the infrastructure and the experience - it's gonna be a nightmare ...

Global Cooling! hahaha- sorry- had to throw that out there.

Yeah, snow in places that aren't used to it can bog things down at the very least and can be dangerous at worst. Take care, any of you out there.

The entire state of south Carolina is closed. Coming from the Chicago area, I find it comical. We got about an inch of ice. I do think we were a little more prepared here than in Atlanta. The roads were empty yesterday by 2.
On a side note, Jim cantore was reporting from the college of Charleston and kicked a campus drunk off of him without missing a beat. Funny stuff.

Rain! We are likely to get some tonight, badly needed rain. We're in the midst of a near record breaking drought. Everything here is bone dry. After a heavy freeze a while back and then all this drought our part of the world looks brown- lots of dead plants and trees. Brown World.

Atlanta and the rest of the deep south don't have the tools to deal with any amount of ice and or snow. So when it does happen all hell breaks loose.

On the other hand we can get a foot of snow here in Colorado and it's business as normal.
People go.to work, schools stay open, and events go on a a planned.

Plus we have over 300 days of sun per year!!

Right. We take all of the snow plows and salt for granted sometimes. The roads would have been cleared before rush hour up north but they can't do that in Atlanta.

    atlanta has -13 snow plows & -4 salt/sand trucks.

atlanta traffic when it is 90 degrees out is a cluster fuck, imagine when some snow & ice come to town.

    pffft.

Well let me tell you... up here in Canada... when we get three feet of snow, the entrances to our igloos are blocked, and our dog teams have been stolen... we suntan.

  • D.C. has just as difficult a time when it snows there too. The whole city shuts down for a couple inches. But really? They kept the kids at the school ALL NIGHT LONG? No one would go and get their kids?

I could understand it if it was over six inches .... but this was what we Northmen consider a dusting. Please I thought 75% of the autos in Georgia were 4x4 trucks.

But then again Atlanta gets PJ to come through on occasion and they haven't headlined in Colorado in more than 10 years!!
  • I feel bad for them. I hope this is a lesson to be better prepared.

Watching the news on it, I feel glad I live in Indiana where I can stand extremely cold temps and somewhat high temps (like 100-110). Plus, my jeep bitch slaps snowy roads in the face.

From what I've heard, Indy and fort wayne schools will be in session until July. I lived in nw Indiana for 18 years and can't remember ever missing school because of the cold. I've felt my share of -20 and -30 but not for that long. I glad I'm in the south.

Back in the mid-80's I remember a few winters in Indiana where the we missed this amount of school due to snow. Speaking as a child of the 80's, it was awesome. Now that I have to pay bills, it sucks big time.

Schools in Michiana (lower Michigan, upper Indiana) have missed many days as well. My old high school has had more snow days in the last month than I had in 4 years when I was there. It's ridiculous. My college had a couple days off this week, which was cool.

In reality, a small bit of snow on roads that aren't treated and can't be treated due to lack of equipment and supplies, really does make driving treacherous. Add that to temperatures which may warm enough at some points to cause some melting and then drop back down to freeze which makes it more slippery as well.

The roads are only more dangerous if the most simple of precautions are not taken. As a proven warrior of snowy highways and roads- tried and tested in Canada for decades now: drive slower.

The sign says 80 (km). Don't go 80. Go 50. Downhill? Go 30-40.

What's the problem though? Once again... stoooooopid people. Duuuuuuumb people. Even up here- with opportunities for so much practice- some moron will go and bugger things up for others that are navigating a safe journey.

fact... drive slow & keep away from others. keep a very nice buffer zone between you & all traffic. slow & steady. hammer the brakes? yeppers a wonderful plan when on a snow covered/icy roadway.

ppl in big cities have almost zero chance as 99% of them are asshole to elbow on one another's bumper. pretty bizarre driving behavior considering the road surface is slippery as a monkey or toad's turd... wait, maybe a whale's turd

imagine being a truck driver moving along w/ 18 wheelers (or more) w/ 80,000 pounds (or more) through blizzards
white knuckle mountain passes. blizzard conditions w/ lightning aiming down the mountain. even good drivers have fuck ups.
i suggest everyone getting their CDL class A license & aim for winter madness.

chain your fucking truck up says the highway patrol. good luck

I went to high school in Indiana in the 80's too. I remember missing a couple days due to the wind chill, but since we didn't have buses, they wouldn't close school due to snow. All the schools around us would close, though. I remember listening in the mornings to the closures on the radio, and our school district always being left off the list. We would throw quite a pity party for ourselves.
