Set List

01. Why Go
02. Do The Evolution
03. Save You

(to the tune of “White Christmas”- ‘I’m dreamin’ of a Big Day Out...’..
“This one’s for Jesus”)

04. Getaway

(band starts to play “Got Some” but stops after the first few chords. Ed says, “I thought we were saving that one for Sydney.” Crowd boos a little. Band starts up again and Ed gestures that he was joking and spits wine into the air.)

05. Got Some
06. Mind Your Manners
(Ed talks about weather and how many friends they have in Melbourne and all the great bands playing here)
07. Low Light

(“This one is a request from Matt Cameron and I would like to send it out to ‘Damo’ (sp)
08. Setting Forth
09. Corduroy
10. Lightning Bolt

(Ed introduces Matt as “The best goddamn drummer on earth...I hesitated not because I don’t believe it. It is inarguable, but because he might get embarrassed and quit the group but fuck it. It’s true...Matt Cameron!”)

11. Dissident
(Ed says that the next song is for three great men sitting right over there and names them. He is referring to some people on the side of the stage)

12. Even Flow

(Ed asks Mike his middle name, David, and assumes Mike was named after the statue. He congratulates the security and the audience for taking care of each other. He also wants to get the word out to Snoop Lion that marijuana is legal in Washington State and that Snoop is invited to come hang out with Pearl Jam. He goes on to recommend that other states and countries follow Seattle’s example and make pot legal.)

13. Sirens w/sing along outro
14. Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town
15. Jeremy
16. Given To Fly
17. Wasted Reprise (talk of the beauty of the country and the surf)
18. Life Wasted
19. Betterman/Save It For Later-(Charley, Cox, Morton, Steele, Wakeling)
(audience sings top)

Encore Break (Ed thanks all the other bands. Ed mentions being upset that Captain and Tennille are getting divorced, “Are you kidding me?” He then points out a person in the audience with a captains hat who Ed jokingly assumes is “The Captain” cutting loose after so many years of marriage. He also congratulations on Jeff and Stone’s long marriage to each other and for the band inviting him to be in their “five way”.)

20. Pendulum
21. Nothingman
22. Daughter/Another Brick In The Wall Part 2-(Waters)
23. Go
24. Porch (Ed climbs into the pit during instrumental break and runs along the barricade)

Encore Break 2

25. Kick Out The Jams w/ Mark Arm-(Davis, Kramer, Smith, Thompson, Tyner)
26. Alive

Great set, band sounded amazing and Ed was in good spirits which always makes for a good performance. Kat's post got all the good stories. Highlights for me were Getaway and Save You.

For folks going go other BDO:
    - there were express lines for people without bags. They let me bring in my bottle of Powerade. One guy wanted me to trash it, another guy was like come on, man, let her take that so I'm not actually sure what the rule actually was
    - the Blue Stage where PJ were on had what I think was a D barricade that people told me about, but it wasn't a real D (you could walk in and out pretty easily). They didn't stop anyone with bags so I guess you could being your bags unlike other reports I heard, it was either Auckland or Gold Coast where no bags were allowed in the stage area
    - got there at 1pm and most of the rail was taken. I could have gone on the rail all the way to the sides off the stage, but decided to go 2nd row Stone (the side away from the a Orange stage where Arcade Fire was playing)
    - people other than 1st row and a cluster in the center were coming and going, so realistically I think I could have arrived right after Primus (band before Beady Eye who was before PJ) and still gotten a good second row spot on Stone's side.
    - they were handing out cups of water if you were close to the front. They'd hand it back too except probably hard to get their attention
    - plenty of merch left after the show, except for poster. The lines moved pretty quickly. They take credit cards (no Amex)
    - Beady Eye really sux, but if you want a good spot you have to suck it up and sit through their set. Most uninspired performance I've ever seen in my life.

Hope this is helpful to someone!
  • very cool set!!thanks Kat!

I guess Immortality lost the toss of the coin with Dissident. Black was left off to beat curfew I believe from a friend in attendance. The whole band were apparently in a very good mood. Looks like a fine festival setlist. Great to see Jeremy in there. I know a lot of people put it down but when Jeff plucks out the intro it always sounds amazing. What a great opener too.

Oh it was great. Well worth the trek down.

The band were in a great mood. Ed balanced a corona on his head for a bout 30 seconds.

He explored the higher range of his vocals amusingly.

Jeff and stone blew kisses at each other when Ed said they'd been married for 30 years. Then Ed said now they have a '5-way' Jeff laughed uncontrollably and Ed said 'in a band, the music. What do you think in referring to? It's a 5 way or then highway'

Lowlight was good as well as pendulum, sirens and getaway.

Cheers a Melbourne. Next stop Sydney.

Really great set. Got 4 th row in front ofimage ed, which later became 7th row... Due to the aussie Bogan crowd moshers who just shoulder charged their was in.

My prediction of why go as opener came through ;-)

Out of the two bdo I've seen I felt GC was a harder rocking show (it was chilly last night), but the name was in a real jovial mood last night.

Highlight for me was a cracking don't go and great jam on betterman.

Shout out to some Victorians friend I met who helped me keep an eye out for my wife(she had a broken toe) and things were getting a little rough for her at front but she survived

On to Adelaide for my final bdo... (Jeff if you need a SG for some pickup bball... PM me ;)

Thanks lads for another memorable evening

Crowd was definitely much larger here than in Auckland or the gold coast. Show was great, loved seeing low light. Only problem was there was a considerable amount of people that were not interested in the band who were just standing around bullshitting & having a good time - and that's all good, BUT I couldn't hear the music over them, particularly on the quiet-er songs like low light, pendulum, etc. That's the downside of the open space festival venue though, the bright side is that I could at least move around to find a better spot.
So, here's a request: play louder in Sydney!!! :-)

Forgot to add there were wives and kids on the side of the stage.

There was a really sweet moment as Ed introduced Mind your manners by saying 'this one is for all the children' he pointed cheekily at his kids and the youngest one waved back to her dad and he waved again lovingly. Was quite sweet. Got me thinking those kids are very lucky seeing their daddies on stage. Bit better then when I used to go to my dads work as a kid haha.

  • Does anyone want to own up to who the Freddie mercury looking jerk from Blue Juice was abusing in the front row. I heard him say something like "I know you're here to see pearl jam but standing there texting is just plain rude"
The abuse to the PJ fan that followed for the next song was out of order. If it was me I would have smashed that sequened g-string wearing, prancing prick that far he wouldn't have to fly to the next Big Day Out.

Getting to the front row required arriving pretty early but between the blue and orange stages there were some good sounds even if I hadn't really heard the bands before.

    The good
    Naked and the famous
    Primus
    Tame impala

    The bad
Beady eye - was it just me or was Gallagher completely coked? Seemed pretty self absorbed and at one point I thought they'd substituted the other band members with Wax museum exhibits they didn't move for that long!

    So Pearl Jam....
I was really unsure how the whole BDO thing would go but the guys looked like they were all here to have fun. Friends and family off to the sides in stage. Great interaction with the fans at the front and with pretty big singalongs to get everyone going. Crowd was good on the rail but can definitely see we're all getting on. Moshing lasts 20 seconds as opposed to 2 hours back in the day haha

I'll know ill get shot down for this but Eddies voice wasn't at its best on some of the older songs which needed to hit that higher level. Only his voice though. The energy was still and will always will be there. Not that it really matters. I think after all these years you start to hear the songs as a mash of the albums, past concerts and the crowd singing.
Finally getting a high five off the great man as he went into the pit sharing wine was surreal.
    Awesome night overall.
  • I also got to high five Eddie. Great show and crowd involvement. This would be a great show to capture on dvd as band were full of energy and having lots of fun on stage

Melbourne stage set up for BDO is different to most other venues. (smaller crowd usually)
I would assume Sydney is like Gold Coast.

But that is rude! Regardless of whether you know Blue Juice's music, if they are on the stage right in front of you, pay the band some respect for coming out and putting on a show. Watch them! You get a break and can text when they finish!

  • My wife and I were in the like a boss area, and it was fucking appalling, paid double the price to get a shithouse deal. The only positive out of it was the accessibilty to drinks. The position it was in was abyssmal, we were so far away from the stage we couldn't even hear the band properly due to the wind dragging the sound to the orange stage side. You could occasionally get good sound for a brief moment but not for long. Two tiny toilet cabins to cater for probably 1000 people at a guess is not my idea of premium toilet access. I contemplated going into the pit but my wife is pregnant so we opted for the safer option in the end. Other than that, the band was awesome as per usual, it was a really good set and looked like they were thrilled to be in Melbourne once again. Getaway is such a great song to hear live. And Low Light was great too. I don't think Ed is lying when he said they have more friends here than in Seattle. I bought my poster and shirt beforehand and left it in the cloak room and picked it up afterwards even though they said they shut at 10 which is when PJ finished up so we raced there and I was basically first there, so you won't have a problem if you're worried about not getting there before they shut up shop. Arcade Fire are absolute pus. As are Beady Eye. He got booed of stage in Werchter 2 years ago and was surprised he didn't get the same treatment here. An idea to the organisers of the BDO is to colour code the marquees or at least have signage stating which stage is which. I was disgusted in that while trying to look for Mudhoney earlier on. So all in all, its a poorly run festival which most people already knew made bearable by the prescence of the greatest band on earth.

Loved the concert. Was at the front of the bar on the orange stage side. Had good views and the sound was great. Had no issues what so ever. Why go was a cranking opener and they rocked it out for the first 5-6 songs. Loved Getaway, really wanted that one. Setting forth sounded really great. Dissident was really good but after seeing the setlist would have rathered immortality, love that song. Betterman kicked ass, the jam was wicked. First encore was great, loved pendulum and crowd really got into daughter/go/porch. 2nd encore was ok, didnt think kick out the jams worked as well as a baba oriley or rockin'. Spewing we didnt get black either.

Thought the crowd was pretty good. At festivals you never know how many die hard fans are there but they were in good voice. Band was really fun and seemed to enjoy themselves. Eddie was good and spoke quite a lot. loved the balancing beer on head as one of my mates has that down to an artform so made for a good laugh.

As for the other bands, i wasnt really into any of them before hand and wont be after. Saw The hives, lumineers, archade fire and PJ. Lumineers were good and was good just to sit down and have a few beers listening to them.

As for the maquees not being colored, i agree could be done better but at the same time they hand out maps and they were easy to follow.

Crowd was smaller than last year but i didnt mind that, made moving around easier and had room to enjoy the music.

It was a great show, but definitely more of a 'greatest hits' setlist than others that I've been to. I guess that's to be expected at a fairly mainstream festival like BDO.

My wife and I were pretty much centre stage, but about 20 metres back. I was quite happy with that, we took our place just after Beady Eye finished at had a good view through the show. Most people around us seemed to be fans. There weren't many drunk idiots around, apart from the one guy who caused a small group to move away from them after they failed to get them to calm down (this was before PJ started). Overall there weren't many wasted people in the whole festival, it seemed quite sedate.

I really enjoyed Sirens, it's probably my favourite off LB. I must admin to not remembering a couple of the other LB tracks until I read the setlist this morning :-p Nothingman, Daughter, Go and Porch were great too.

One other nice moment - one of the children on the right side of stage looked to be disabled, they were in a wheelchair/buggy. I've no idea who he or she was, but it was touching that Eddie went over during one of the solos (Evenflow?) and spend a minute or so crouched down talking to them.

Wow! What a Fantastic day and the show topped it off!

I'd never been to th BDO before and probably would never had gone if PJ hadn't played. However I thoroughly enjoyed the day and overall the festival looked fairly well organised. Having said that I cant compare it to other previous events or festivals as I wouldnt normally attend.

Went for a look around after enjoying a few 'frothies' down the back and couldn't believe how close I could get to the stage during Primus' set. So I decided to hang around and watch the other acts on the main stage to cement my position close to the rail on Mike's side.

Pearl Jam were just awesome!! Reading reviews from the NA tour before Xmas really set high standards for the band and they didn't disappoint. From the outset they were on fire! They all just seem to be in their prime and enjoying every fucking note!!

Why Go - jumped out of the blocks and the crowd sang every note. Ed seemed to appreciate the singing and crowd energy on this one!! Ed had this wild look in his eyes. He was pumped too!!

Do the Evolution - continued the early energy and the crowd helped out with the singing..not as good as SthAmerica though or the Hartford boot I've been listening to. Ed included the 'Aborigines' line again..which he has done in the past during OZ shows.

Save You, Mind Your Manners and Got Some kept up the momentum with good crowd participation. I loved it when Ed looked over to his kids during the introduction to MYM. The crowd really got into and shouted the 'Mind Your Manners' part.

Of course Getaway was a nice treat and was not expecting that! As it hasn't necessariy been a regular through the recent shows.

LB - is my favourite off the new record and even though I was expecting to hear it there is always that thought that they may skip it for this show just for a change.

Dissident to was a nice surprise too (ALTHOUGH THEY LEFT OFF IMMORTALITY...GRRRR) and crowd favourites Even Flow, Small Town, Jeremy (huge crowd response) and Betterman really kept the crowd 'in the show'.

The one that surprised me was Sirens...A LOT of people around me were right into it and singing every note. It was nice to see!

The encore was awesome...not expecting Pendulum!! Nothingman, Daughter, GO (WHICH INCITED A BIT OF MOSHING NEAR ME a'la 94-95) and Porch was just brilliant. I though Ed was going to spend a bit of time on the globe but he aborted pretty quickly. Mike as always was on his game and his solos throughout the songs were just impecable. Standing on his side its hard to focus on anyone else other than he and Ed of course. I found myself really trying to watch Stone, Jeff and Matt as to not ignore them and enjoy their playing too. Jeff seemed to have a lot of fun with the globes during Porch too!

It was nice to see Mark Arm up there but I think Kick out the Jams lost the crowd a little..albeit a good song! (was hoping for Baba!) And Alive of course was a perfect closer!

At the end the crowd hung around expecting even one more and chanted 'Pearl Jam' for a bit. However as with the previous two shows the curfew was pretty tight and you couldnt not complain...the band gave everything.

All in all a top show by a band at the top of their game!

For me personally only a few songs I hadn't seen live before...Go, Setting Forth, Low Light and Nothingman (besides LB songs) but part of me was equally pumped about the reaction the classic songs got from the crowd and singalongs they envoked just helped make the show just as special as to any I'd seen previously (and that includes Melbourne 2009).

Thank you Pearl Jam. Hope they return again in the near future.

Hope to see some of you at the Ed solo shows in a few short weeks. Hoefully I get to hear Immortality there ;)

BDO wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but having said that Pleeeeeease don't play one again!!! I'm getting too old to stand around for hours listening to other bands that I don't like. I had sore feet and a back ache before the show began.
However the show was great and it was nice to have a cool breeze blowing all night.
Highlights for me was Jeremy, Nothingman and better man. I also would have preferred black to kick out the jams.
Great to see Eddie and his family on the side of stage enjoying Cosmic Psychos gig.
Im so happy with my righteous self..

Did anyone have a problem with the sound at the Melbourne show? I read some comments on Facebook earlier that people were not happy with it.

I went to the Gold Coast show and managed to snag a spot on the barrier down past Stone and although the view was great, the sound left a lot to be desired. Mike's guitar was inaudible at times and was drowned out by Matt's drumming and Jeff's bass.

10 club could a message be somehow passed onto the band's sound technicians so it is better for the rest of the Australian shows?

    Thanks.

Was close to stage, sound was good there but could understand the boss ticket people being unhappy, that was a joke of a set up really, BDO is average until PJ hit the stage

Ed says that the next song is for three great men sitting right over there and names them. He is referring to some people on the side of the stage

He was talking about the kids. He dedicated another song to them, later, too. I went and saw Cosmic Psychos and Mudhoney earlier in the day, and Eddie was hanging out at the side of the stage with their families.

Got 4 th row in front of ed, which later became 7th row... Due to the aussie Bogan crowd moshers who just shoulder charged their was in.

I must've been pretty close to you, I think I was about 8 rows back but got pushed forward by the bogans (and had to help guide a crowd surfer over the barrier). Got there about half way through Beady Eye, who clearly didn't want to be there. Awful.

The show was pretty good. Their newer stuff is better live than on the records, and I had Porch in my head all morning and got to hear it, so that was nice.

I posted a few clips here if you're interested.
  • Glad I went. Took my brother to his first PJ gig.
Good festival set although I much rather (along with most 10C-ers) to go to a dedicated show. We made it pretty close to the stage even without camping out.

I went from work to Cosmic Psychos -> Mudhoney -> Northlane -> PJ

Band had good energy although I prefer the performance of a more intimate gig. Solos were held back, no Ledbetter, seemed like a tight schedule.

Mike's new SG- Gibson or Lolar pickups? Couldn't read it and not sure who actually stamps their covers. (Gearhead much? :P )

Had an amazing night, loved the sirens outro and the guys all seems to be the absolute best of mates on stage which was really enjoyable to watch. It was my first time on the fence and couldn't believe how engaging it was! They are so captivating up close and they make sure they look everyone in the eyes down the front. The Eddie high 5 was a highlight for me whist distributing wine to the smart few who had cups on the fence. Met some 10 club members at a pub in flemmington before hand which was great. I will have to use the forum a little more now to be savvy with the pre-show parties for 10 club personal.
Is anyone catching up for drinks prior to the Eddie solo show in Melb at the Palais? Would be great to get involved for pre-drinks!!!

  • Show # 15 for me. Got there at gates open and got a good spot on the rail directly in front of Stone.

Loved Why Go as an opener. Got the crowd going royally.I hadn’t heard Save You and Dissident in over 10 years so they were great also.

Anyone who wants to see either Getaway or Low Light should follow me to my next show. I’ve got Low Light at my past four shows and Getaway at my past three!

All in all was great to see PJ up this close. My only downer being that not one of the 26 songs played was one I haven’t heard previous! Can’t complain though!

I had a fantastic night with great friends (new and old) everyone around me was singing and getting along great. We were about 20 metres from the front on Stones side. Not being able to hear Mike would be my only complaint.
Unexpectedly i shed a bit of tear during Given To Fly.
    Thankyou again Pearl Jam! :)
